Chapter 81: Selling Cold Ointment (1)
The old man nodded and said depressedly, “You are right. We can only try to survive and wait for the help now.”
While the villagers talked in low voices, Duan Yixin listened thoughtfully. When they arrived at Chun Shan Town, it was only seven in the morning. When Duan Yixin got off the bullock cart, Sun Chen came over to help her unload the bamboo basket from the bullock cart.
She took out two copper coins, handed them to him, and said, “Thank you, Young Master Sun.”
Sun Chen took the money and asked, “Where are you going, Xin Niang? Do you need me to accompany you?”
Duan Yixin shook her head and said, “I just need to buy some daily necessities. It won’t take too long, so I won’t trouble you.”
Hearing what she said, Sun Chen nodded, then lowered his voice and said, “What the old man said before is all true. You should be careful and try to avoid quiet places and dark alleys.”
Looking at his serious face, Duan Yixin nodded and said, “I understand. Thank you for your reminder.”
After saying goodbyes to the villagers who warned her to be careful, Duan Yixin walked towards Chang Shou Pharmacy with her bamboo basket on her back.
Coming down from the bullock cart, the old man looked at her retreating back and said, “That young lady should not go out alone. I don’t know what her family thinks about letting a young lady like her go out alone in this situation.”
After hearing what the old man said, a middle-aged woman from Yunshan Village said, “She is an orphan. Although she still has maternal uncles, those people are worse than animals. It is better for her to live alone than to rely on those people.”
When the villagers heard this, they could only sigh, and everyone went busy with their own affairs. After bandits attacked the village, many people lost their relatives, and the children became orphans. Nowadays, it is not uncommon for young ladies to live alone.
At the same time, after walking for more than twenty minutes, Duan Yixin walked into Chang Shou Pharmacy. A servant saw her and came to greet her with a smile.
The servant smiled at Duan Yixin and said, “Miss Duan, welcome to Chang Shou Pharmacy. Are you here to sell medicinal herbs today?”
Duan Yixin nodded at him as a greeting, then looked at the crowded main hall and said, “Business at Chang Shou Pharmacy is very good today.”
The servant smiled even brighter when he heard her words and said, “Thank you very much, Miss Duan, for your kind words. Business has been pretty good these days.”
Realizing that the servant’s expression was a little bit off, Duan Yixin asked, “What is the matter? ”
As if waiting for her question, the servant sighed exaggeratedly. Then, he made an invitation gesture for Duan Yixin to follow him.
The servant then lowered his voice and said, “To tell Miss Duan the truth, because of the hot weather, many people have skin infections, so most of our medicines for treating skin infections are out of stock. For this reason, we have received many complaints in the past few days. Now, Shopkeeper Tan and the physicians are discussing how to solve this urgent need for medicines.”
After speaking, he looked at Duan Yixin and said apologetically, “I’m sorry that I talk too much. Miss Duan, please come this way.”
Duan Yixin raised her eyebrows slightly when she watched the servant putting on an act in front of her but still followed the servant to the side hall. Because the main hall was crowded, no one noticed when the servant took her away. Walking into the side hall, Duan Yixin saw Tan Lidan there as well.
Seeing the servant leading her in, Tan Lidan’s eyes lit up. He stood up from his seat and said politely, “Miss Duan, welcome to our Chang Shou Pharmacy. I have been waiting for you to visit us again.”
Duan Yixin smiled at him and said, “Greetings, Shopkeeper Tan. I saw that business is very good today.”
Tan Lidan gestured to her to take a seat and said, “Please take a seat, Miss Duan.”
After she took a seat, he added, “Thanks to your medicinal herbs, we have a lot of customers these days.”
Duan Yixin put down the bamboo basket on the ground and sat down in front of Tan Lidan. Unlike the last time she came to Chang Shou Pharmacy, today, the servant took her to a smaller side hall. In the center of the hall, there is only a round table with six wooden stools placed around it.
The decoration in this smaller side hall is simpler than the other side hall, but Duan Yixin can see that the items inside this hall are of higher quality and have a more sophisticated design. She prefers this side hall to another side hall that looks more luxurious because it gives her a sense of tranquility.
While she was scanning the room, Tan Lidan made a pot of tea for them and then placed a cup of tea in front of her. After the two of them took a sip of tea, he asked, “Miss Duan, are you here to sell medicinal herbs again?”
Duan Yixin put down the teacup, nodded, and said, “Yes.”
After a pause, she added, “I heard from the servant that many people come to buy medicine to treat skin infections because of the hot weather.”
Tan Lidan nodded and said, “That’s right. We used a lot of medicinal herbs to make the ointment, but we still couldn’t meet the high market demand. Due to the high temperature, many plants have died. Unfortunately, the medicinal herbs have also dried up, and we can no longer rely on buying them from the herb collectors.”

Hearing what he said, Duan Yixin said, “I brought some cold ointment today. Shopkeeper Tan, would you like to take a look?”
