Chapter 142: You Ruined Me
“Good,” Aurora withdrew her gaze. “Don’t attempt to do anything that will stress me.”
Xander nodded in understanding. “Of course, I will only listen to my wife.”
Though he said that, Aurora simply didn’t trust him and she didn’t care that he knew about it.

TUESDAY.
The next day after work, Olivia drove to the Swift Residence after receiving her mother’s persistent calls.
The housekeeper received her coat at the door before she trotted in with a tinge of annoyance in her brows.
“Why do you keep calling like I don’t have any job to attend to?” Olivia inquired as soon as she sat on the sofa and faced her mother.
“My daughter refused to show up in front of me since her father’s funeral, what was I supposed to do?” Stella asked and without waiting for a response, she added, shifting her gaze to Olivia’s baby bump, “How is my grandson doing?”
Olivia scoffed and shifted into her seat properly. Just then, a house-help came over to serve her a glass of water and some fresh fruits.
“Your grandson is healthy and hearty, as always. Now that I am here, can you get on with your questions? You probably didn’t call me back home to stare at my face.
Stella was displeased by her attitude even though she knew she was right, so she asked, “This is your father’s house, why are you in a hurry to leave?”
“Because I would rather be somewhere else right now taking a nap. And you don’t expect to come all the way here from the company for it,” Olivia said as a matter of fact while meeting her mother’s gaze head-on.
In the end, Stella couldn’t win her in the argument and gave up. “You sure do bear grudges.”
“I learnt well from someone,” Olivia retorted, hinting at something.
Stella paid her anger no mind anymore. If it wasn’t for the fact that Olivia was her daughter, she wouldn’t be so patient with her or even tolerate her temper.
“I met the Major’s family,” Stella started as a smile returned to her lips. “They are very hospitable. Although their house is simple and too bland for my taste, it isn’t bad as their lifestyle is still lavish… Although I didn’t meet the Major’s son, there will be plenty of opportunities for that… The Major asked after you, and I told him you will come with me next time.”
Olivia listened to her mother talking about the new ground she was standing on with Major Walker, including most of the benefits she would be reaping now and became slightly interested.
“I think we are almost there. Being invited to his home is one of the last aims I have on my list,” Stella concluded.
“I’m glad you were able to secure this connection with Major Walker finally. Even though Dad is gone, our foothold in Wing City will not be shaken,” Olivia said satisfactorily at the thought of her late father.
Her father used to be a covering for them, but after he left, she was afraid their position in society would be affected. Olivia loved the limelight and the attention that comes with it so much that she isn’t willing to part with it.
“Exactly,” Stella agreed with her. Then thinking of something, she quickly said with a serious expression on her face, “Don’t tell anyone about Aurora’s biological father’s identity. This is a secret that must remain between us.”
As Olivia heard that reminder, her heartbeat increased by a few paces out of guilt. She had already informed Mrs. Scott about it, so her mother was a tad bit late.
Regardless, Olivia pretended to value the reminder. “Of course,” she said, brows furrowing slightly. “We can’t afford this truth to get into the wrong ears.”
“Good,” Stella finally relaxed. “Tell me about Mrs. Scott. How well did she treat you?” Smiling, she added, “I think it’s safe to say that you have conquered her.”
Olivia was happy to talk about her trip the other day and how well Mrs. Scott treated her. She couldn’t shut up about it but there was something she didn’t talk about, the main conversation she had with Mrs. Scott.
Olivia knew her mother was interested in that and deliberately bypassed it.
“I didn’t think she would get me some expensive stuff from her trip. Mrs. Scott doesn’t seem to have many friends. She must be lonely being in that big house by herself. It’s no wonder she travels a lot.”
Hearing that, Stella scoffed. “The only thing she has is money and Mr. Xander Scott. She has no real power or social standing in Wing City so do not do much to please her. Just get her to face your sister.”

Almost immediately, Olivia came to Mrs. Scott’s defence. “Mum, don’t talk about her that way. You don’t know what she’s like because you haven’t been close to her in private. Mrs. Scott is not as simple as she looks.”
“You are already defending her after a few gifts and one invitation,” Stella said, giving her an eye. “You just said that Mrs. Scott isn’t simple, don’t lose your guard.”
“I know what I’m doing, Mum,” Olivia spat with a tinge of annoyance in her tone. She hated the fact that her mother was looking down on her thinking that she couldn’t do anything without her help.
And this is the reason she will never tell her about her conversation with Mrs. Scott, and her next plans.
“No, you don’t,” Stella insisted. “You have to listen to me before you ruin us both.”
“Don’t you think it’s already too late for that?” Olivia asked, her gaze darkening in the process. Stella frowned, narrowing her eyes at her. “What do you mean by that?”
“Are you still asking?” Anger coursed through Olivia’s veins as she watched her mother ask one question after the other. “You ruined me by insisting I married Owen. Now, look at the kind of life I’m living.”
Stella withdrew her gaze and leaned back into the couch. “Olivia, everybody has to bear the consequences of their actions. Owen was your choice and I supported it. And since then, I have never wavered. You should do the same.”
“I can’t believe you are saying this to me!” Olivia stood up from her seat angrily and grabbed her bag.
