Chapter 26: Too Handsome to be a Murderer
Aurora shakily grabbed her phone and dialled Abigail’s number. At the first ring, the call connected.
“Aura, I was just about to call you back. What’s going on? Are you in any kind of trouble? Did Xander—?”
“I’m fine, Abby,” Aurora quickly said, cutting her off before she could say anything to incur Xander’s wrath. “I just thought I could invite you to dinner, but Xander has other plans for us tonight, so you don’t need to come again.”
There was a pause from the other end, followed by feet shuffling. The next moment, Abigail asked, still in doubt. “Aura, you know you can talk to me if something is bothering you, right?”
“Of course, you are my best friend.” Aurora’s heart bled. She had so many things she wanted to tell her unfortunately she can’t do any of that with Xander on her neck. “Did you get the bottles of wine and the invitation card for my champagne launch?”
Abigail let out a soft sigh as the weight on her shoulders dropped. “I got them. Mum loved it and promised to be present at the launch. I invited a few friends of mine from the industry, and I will be there too.”
“Oh, thank you so much, Abby, this means a lot to me,” Aurora said gratefully.
“Anything for you girl.” Abigail finally smiled. “And don’t forget you have the best friend in the whole world with whom you can share anything.”
“I know.” Aurora nodded, fresh tears pouring from her eyes. “Good night.”
As soon as the call dropped, Xander slipped the gun back behind him without taking his gaze off her.
“I will leave your phone with you, trusting you won’t make any stupid move even though I will be keeping a close watch on you; because you are preparing for your champagne launch, and I want its success as much as you do, Sweetheart.”
Aurora cringed at that nickname. She felt nauseous. How dare he call her ‘Sweetheart’ after threatening to kill her best friend?
“I heard you haven’t had anything to eat yet. Come and join me for dinner,” Xander invited calmly as he stretched his hand out.
The only thing that crossed Aurora’s mind when she saw his hand was the scene of him pulling the trigger on that man, nothing else. She was so afraid of Xander’s presence that she didn’t even want to be in the same room with him.
Aurora scooted away from him. “I’m not hungry,” she stated, wiping her tears.
“Well, I don’t mind you watching me eat,” Xander said, insisting that she followed him out as he stuffed his hands inside his pants pocket. “Also, don’t think about leaving this house until you are ready to listen to the damn story about who I really am.”
Aurora glared daggers at him. She wanted nothing more than to strike his face at least once. He was too handsome to be evil.
A few minutes later, Xander sat at the head seat positioned at the end of the table with a dinner spread in front of him while Aurora took the other end with only a glass of water sitting in front of her.
Xander looked her way with every few bites he took, but she refused to return the favour. Then he turned to Nene who was waiting at the side.
“Madam’s eyes are puffed up from all the crying, ice them,” he instructed.
Nene nodded and quickly walked to Aurora and helped her up from her seat. “Ma’am, please come with me to get some ice compression done.”
Aurora followed her, but not without sending Xander a death glare.
—
Xander had a short meeting with Liam and the head of his security team in his study before going up to the master bedroom. As soon as he opened the door, he saw Aurora grabbing a few pillows.
“Where are you going to, Madam?” he inquired, lifting a curious brow.
Aurora stuffed two pillows under her arms and turned to roll her eyes at him. At first, she didn’t want to say anything to him but thinking that she could at least hurt him with her words, she changed her mind.
“I neither want to share a bed nor a room with a murderer, so get out of my way!” she spat.
Xander’s brows furrowed slightly in confusion. “Aren’t you the wife of a murderer?”
Instantly, Aurora’s mood dampened. She gnashed her teeth, glaring daggers at him. And in the end, he gave up.

“All right, I can’t keep count of how many times you’ve rolled your eyes or glared at me since this afternoon. There are plenty of rooms in this house. I will go lay my head in anyone that wouldn’t mind that I just killed a full-blown man.”
After saying that, Xander walked into the dressing room to pick up a few things. When he emerged minutes later, he smiled at Aurora. “Good night, Sweetheart,” he said before turning to leave.
The next morning, Xander received a call from the caregiver at the main house, informing him that his mother missed a step. At once, he prepared to leave.
“Don’t let my wife know I left the house,” Xander instructed Nene as he threw on his jacket. “And since she won’t come down to eat because of me, send a breakfast tray with lots of fruits to her room.”
Xander knew Aurora wouldn’t attempt to eat in his presence and because he cared about her well-being, he made the arrangements. Also, he wasn’t bothered that she would venture into forbidden rooms again. After all, yesterday’s event still haunted her.
—
Xander arrived at his parents’ private living quarters separate from the main house.
As soon as he walked in, he saw his mother sitting on the couch with a bandage wrapped around her left ankle.
“Mama.” He walked up to her and kissed the back of her hands before examining her foot. Just then, his father stepped out with a glass of water and handed it to his wife.
“The doctor checked on her an hour ago,” old Mr. Scott said as he settled on the single couch in the living room. “Luckily, she only sprained a nerve.”
Xander released a deep sigh of relief as he sat next to his mother. “Mama, it seems like you missed me so much that you would sprain your ankle just to have me come back,” he teased.
“You are right,” old Mrs. Scott responded.
“Unfortunately, we won’t be able to attend the champagne launch anymore,” old Mr. Scott said to Xander regrettably.
“Yes,” old Mrs. Scott added. “Please extend our compliments and regard to your friend.”
Xander nodded in understanding. “I will.”
The next half an hour was spent chatting about funny events of the past before Xander’s father remembered something important.
He cleared his throat. Fixing his gaze on Xander, he said, “Your mother and I have been talking about you getting married as you are quickly approaching your forties. So, we arranged a few dates for you. Make time next weekend to attend one.”
“Papa, Mama, thank you for being so thoughtful, but you will have to cancel all the arranged dates because I am already married,” Xander announced, showing off his wedding band.
His aged parents exchanged confused glances before casting a questioning gaze on him. But right as they were about to start interrogating him, Owen rushed into the room.
“Uncle, you are married?” he questioned, eyes nearly popping out from their sockets.
