Chapter 28: Interrogation
Aurora thought Xander had completely lost his mind. But to her surprise, he picked up the shoe and walked towards her. Stopping in front of her, he stared at her for a moment before releasing a deep sigh.
“I have never dealt with a stubborn and challenging woman like you. You will be the death of me,” he mumbled as he squatted in front of her and helped her foot into the shoe.
“I actually don’t mind you dying right now,” Aurora said with malice laced in her tone as he straightened his back.
Xander chuckled lightly and touched the tip of her nose but she swatted his hand away as if it was a fly.
“Sweetheart, believe me, that I will be ready to atone for my sins with my death just for your sake, unfortunately, it won’t be enough to satisfy you, so I choose to live long instead.”
Looking at that handsome man who would kill a human being without batting an eye, anger and hate swirled in Aurora’s chest. But too bad for Xander, his recent actions were not enough to distract her from her question, so she asked again.
“Was the engagement party the first time you saw me?”
Xander resumed his steps, letting out a deep sigh when she followed him. “No,” he replied, but it wasn’t enough to get her off his back, so he could only allow her to follow him to his study.
He wasn’t even surprised when she pulled out a seat from across his desk and sat down without his permission. Seems like this was going to be a long ride.
“When and where was the first time you saw me?” Aurora interrogated.
“I thought I was your enemy?” Xander asked, sparing her a glance as he turned on his laptop.
Aurora leaned into the table with a dark gaze. “That doesn’t change anything! Also, stop trying to change the topic and answer the question.”
“Well.” Xander leaned back into his seat and started with his explanation. “I first saw you on the 7th of February; two months ago, on my visit to Wing City this year, a pure coincidence. My car was leaving the parking lot of the cultural museum when I saw you linking arms with Owen. I assume you were on a date.”
Aurora didn’t even want to think about the fact that he remembered the exact date and the location where he first saw her. She didn’t want his image in her head to get worse, so she edged him on.
“I saw you again at the business conference I attended two days after I moved back to Wing City. That was when I discovered you were being cheated on,” Xander revealed, finishing his story with a clap. “So, you see, I’m not a psychopath.”
Aurora scoffed, thinking he was a big joker. “Only psychopaths will kill a human without batting an eye.”
“I know you won’t understand, but you can’t blame me. I did what I had to do,” he said, spreading his arms.
Nothing infuriated Aurora more like this attitude. He was so laid back, speaking casually like he only killed a bird and not a man.
What sort of monster did she throw herself to?
Aurora slapped her hand on her desk and said to him, “You didn’t have to kill those men even though my stepmother contracted them, My Dad already threatened her and asked her to get rid of them.”
“And you think she would have listened to him?” Xander laughed at her innocence. She was completely oblivious to the harsh realities of life. “Sweetheart, listen to the bitter truth. If your stepmother truly listens to your father, she wouldn’t dare to mistreat you, at least not under his watch.”
Aurora’s brows furrowed as the corners of her lips turned downwards. She was in total disagreement with that logic.
“Just in case you don’t know, my Dad is a busy man who doesn’t have the time to keep an eye on his wife all the time even though he is protective of me. Stella is a difficult woman to keep in check.”
“What happened to divorcing her?” he asked, exuding calmness.
“I’m sure he would have done that if it was that easy,” she said defensively.
Xander drummed his fingers on the desk as he thought of how to carry on this communication without hurting Aurora’s feelings. In the end, he sighed.
“Until you start keeping an open mind and accepting the truth for what it actually is without your emotions in the way, you will continue to be a pawn in the hands of others.”
“Since you are talking about keeping an open mind and accepting the truth without letting my emotions get in the way, how about you tell me the reason you dragged those men inside your basement instead of handing them over to the police?”
Xander stopped drumming his fingers and leaned out from his seat as his gaze turned serious. “Like I told you yesterday, those men were criminals.”

“What do you mean ‘were’? You killed all of them?” Instantly, her gaze widened in shock as she watched him in horror.
She had been so down watching him kill one of them not knowing that he also got rid of the rest as soon as she turned her back.
“You monster!” She bellowed, standing from her seat.
Xander ignored her and continued, “I had to kill them because they had seen my face. Handing them to the police would have been useless. They would have been released the next day.”
Meeting Aurora’s furious gaze, he added, “You must be so gullible to think your stepmother would let them live after they are arrested. She would have silenced them so they would never rat her out. So, they would have died either way.”
“Xander, why is a common criminal seeing your face such a huge problem?” Aurora asked, squinting her eyes as she slowly sat back down after he let that information slip from his lips. “What kind of odd job are you involved in?”
