Chapter 29: Avoiding Her All Night
Xander held Aurora’s gaze for a moment, slightly taken aback by her quick wit after he momentarily lost himself.
She was supposed to focus more on the murder he committed and not on him given her current erratic emotional state. But no, she chose to be smart this time.
Xander pressed a button on his desk and as soon as a red light showed, he leaned in. “Come in,” he instructed and relaxed back into his seat.
“Sweetheart, we are done for today,” he smiled at Aurora as he rubbed his hands together with a satisfactory smirk.
Aurora’s entire face was contorted in disbelief. “You’re seriously not going to confess the real job you’re hiding behind your disguise at DANTE Group?”
“I believe I have done a good job today, now, it’s time for my meeting,” he replied.
Just then, a firm knock sounded on the door, prompting Aurora to snap her gaze behind her. The next moment, the door was pushed open with Liam leading five burly-looking men into the room. Almost immediately, the atmosphere in the room shifted.
Fear gripped Aurora as their huge figure loomed over. When she quickly turned her gaze back to Xander, he had stopped smiling. She took that as a cue to leave and no longer bothered him.
Aurora had dinner alone at night.
As much as she hated Xander’s presence, finding out who he was, was more important, so she didn’t mind dining with him. Unfortunately, he didn’t show up. Not even his shadow did. And she couldn’t ask the servants of his whereabouts otherwise what would that make her after the trauma he put her through?
Even when Aurora retired to the master bedroom for the night, she waited for Xander for over ten minutes, thinking he would show up before going to bed.
The next morning, Aurora freshened up and went down for breakfast only to see Xander already sitting in the head chair.
“Good morning, Princess,” Xander greeted her warmly, and his gaze followed her until she took a seat at the other end of the table.
Aurora completely ignored him and cast her gaze on one of the servants waiting at the side and immediately, some of her favourite breakfast food was shifted to her corner.
“I see…” Xander drawled. “We are not on talking terms today.”
Aurora bit into her strawberry jam-spread toasted bread and grabbed her glass of unsweetened milkshake without a care in the world. If anyone was sitting across from her, then it must be a ghost.
Aurora had no intention of acknowledging Xander today, not after he’d deliberately evaded her all night, dodging the question she’d demanded an answer to.
Xander accepted his fate and finished his food first. He wiped the corner of his lips with a napkin and got to his feet. Then he went straight to Aurora and leaned in for a kiss but as soon as he did that, she grabbed the knife from her plate and stabbed it on the table forcefully.
“Woah! Are you trying to kill your husband?” he asked, quickly stepping away.
Aurora cast a brief glance at the domestic secretary and said, “Nene, you know, my husband is dead and I would like to set up an altar to pray that he never reincarnates. Can you help me with that?”
Xander stared at Aurora dumbstruck. Did she just wish him death? Ultimately, he could only take his leave, saving Nene who was in a dilemma.
“Ma’am, a few arrangements have been made for your champagne launch. Please come with me to check them out,” Nene said, guiding Aurora into one of the rooms downstairs as soon as breakfast was over.
Aurora was stunned stepping into a room with three racks of stunning dresses in one section, a makeup stand with expensive makeup and skincare products in another section and branded shoes and bags on the other side.
“What is all of this?” she asked, impressed by the setup.
“Mr. Scott prepared them as a pre-gift for your product launch on Tuesday. He wants you to look the best,” Nene replied.
Instantly, Aurora’s eyes lost their shine. “I’m not interested. I have already made my own arrangements,” she said, storming off.
If Xander thought he could get into her good books so easily, he was dreaming. And while it was true that she was kind and had a large heart, some boundaries shouldn’t be crossed.
First, he deceived her into marrying him. Secondly, he killed people in his basement. Thirdly, he refused to reveal his secret identity to her. Fourthly, he threatened to kill her best friend of over fifteen years and lastly, he confined her in his home and didn’t want to grant her a divorce.
Aurora had only one piece of advice for him after counting all his heart-wrecking atrocities; ‘Quit trying, there is no hope for you’.

Some minutes later, Xander received word that Aurora rejected his gifts and wanted to leave the premises with only a handbag.
“Let her take Nene with her.” Xander sighed. “Follow her from a good distance, but let her know I have my eyes on her.”
—
Aurora opted to shop for herself, rather than accept Xander’s offerings. With Nene by her side – whose presence she didn’t mind – she entered a luxurious department store
Aurora sat in a private changing room with Nene and stared at the champagne-coloured gowns in the clothing racks brought for her before making her pick.
“I will try these two gowns.” She pointed at the shoes lined up next to the rack and said, “Get me that gold platform and the pair of stilettos next to it.”
Within five minutes, Aurora tried on her first pick and stepped out from behind the curtains.
“Nene, what do you think?” she asked, fixing her gaze on her.
“The gown is beautiful, but I think the glitters are too dazzling,” Nene said, taking in her looks. “It hides your aura.”
“I will try on the other dress,” Aurora said and hurried back behind the curtains. As soon as she drew the curtains close, a soft knock sounded on the door and one of the staff in the room went to open it.
“I’ll try the other dress,” Aurora said, disappearing behind the curtains. As the soft fabric rustled shut, a discreet knock sounded, and one of the staff members moved to open the door.
Nene sprang to her feet, bowing respectfully as Xander entered the room. With a raised finger to his lips, he silenced the space, and Nene let out a quiet sigh of relief.
The staff instinctively grasped the unspoken signal and swiftly exited, leaving them behind plus Aurora who was changing behind the curtains.
With hands tucked into his pockets, Xander scanned the space, his eyes settling on the opulent curtains, and immediately, he strode toward them without asking questions.
