Chapter 343: Good News at Long Last
The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the hospital room. Xander lay motionless, his face pale, his body still recovering from the gunshot wound and the trauma of the explosion.
Days had passed, but there was no change. No sign of him waking up.
Aurora sat beside him, her hands gently wrapped around his. Dark circles framed her eyes from exhaustion, but she refused to leave his side.
“Talk to him,” the doctor had suggested earlier. “Sometimes, they hear us even when they’re unconscious.”
So, she did.
She told him about their home, about how empty their bed felt without him. She told him about their babies.
“Xander, we’re having twins.”
The doctor’s words echoed in her mind as she stroked his hand, her voice soft but laced with emotion.
“You should see your parents. They were so happy when they found out. And Abigail? She nearly screamed when she heard.” A small chuckle escaped her lips, though it was short-lived. “You should have been there.”
Her voice cracked at the last sentence.
Still, there was no movement. No response.
A tear slipped down her cheek, landing on the back of his hand.
“Do you hear me at all?” she whispered. “Or are you going to leave me all alone?”
She gripped his fingers tighter. “I need you to wake up, Xander. Not for me. For them.” Her other hand went to her belly. “They need their father. I need you.”
The ache in Aurora’s chest intensified. Every passing hour felt like an eternity. The thought of raising their children without him, of losing him forever, made her stomach twist in fear.
Then suddenly, the door opened. Thinking it was the doctor, Aurora wiped her tears and turned around, only to see Asher and Abigail walk in.
Immediately, she guessed Asher might have told Abigail everything they had been keeping from her. Aurora didn’t know how to react.
“Aura,” Abigail rushed to Aurora’s side and enveloped her with a tight, warm hug. “You didn’t have to go through everything alone.”
A soft whimper escaped Aurora’s lips. She had a lot of things she wanted to say, but she couldn’t bring herself to do that because the second she opened her mouth, more tears would gush from her eyes.
Abigail understood Aurora’s plight and didn’t force her. Instead, she held her close in her embrace and kissed the top of her head while trying not to shed any tears as well.
She had come here to be a pillar of support for her best friend and not to be emotional.
Asher watched the two best friends for a moment before quietly leaving the room, giving them the private moment they needed.
Several minutes later, Aurora was calmer now, so Asher came back into the room.
“Aurora, don’t worry too much so the babies don’t feel weary. I know Xander. He will wake up soon,” Asher placed a hand on Aurora’s shoulder encouragingly.
“Thank you,” she managed a small smile, grateful for his support.

Aurora’s cries of pain echoed through the private hospital room. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead as she gripped Abigail’s hand tightly, her nails digging into her palm.
She had been in labour for hours now, and the contractions were getting stronger by the minute.
Doctors and nurses moved swiftly around her, monitoring her vitals and preparing for delivery. But through all the chaos, there was only one thought in Aurora’s mind.
Xander.

Where was he? Was he still unconscious? She had dreamed of this moment differently—him by her side, holding her hand, whispering words of encouragement. But now, he wasn’t here.
Tears welled up in her eyes as another contraction hit.
“Ma’am, you have to breathe,” a nurse urged gently.
Aurora was exhausted. Her body felt weak, her limbs numb, and her vision blurred from the pain.
“I… I can’t do this,” she panted, shaking her head. She was too exhausted, too broken to continue fighting.
“Yes, you can, Aura,” Abigail whispered, her voice firm but soft as tears clouded her eyes. “You are Aurora Swift, the strongest woman I know. You’ve come this far despite the hurdles and struggles. Just a little more.”
The doctor smiled. “Mrs. Scott, it’s time. On the next contraction, I need you to push.”
Aurora took a deep breath. She thought of Xander and her babies, who were finally ready to come into this world.
‘I can do this,’ she encouraged herself.
With one final push, a loud cry filled the room.
“The first baby is out!” the doctor announced.
A few seconds later, another cry followed.
“And here comes the second one!”
Aurora burst into tears, overwhelmed with relief and joy. Abigail’s vision blurred as he watched the doctors clean and wrap the babies.
“Congratulations, Mrs. Scott. You have a beautiful baby boy… and a gorgeous baby girl.”
Aurora gasped, barely able to process the words. A boy and a girl.
“You did it, Aura,” Abigail squeezed her hand gently. “I’m so proud of you girl. So proud of you.”
Aurora nodded as tears of joy streamed down her eyes. She did it for Xander and their children.
—
Outside the room, the Scott old couple were overjoyed to learn of the birth of the twins; likewise, Stephanie and Olivia, who waited with them outside the delivery room until this point.
“This is good news for both families,” Stephanie said, her eyes glistening with tears. Her niece had spent hours in labour pains before pushing forth her children.
Though it wasn’t an easy fit, it was a thing of joy.
“Thank Goodness!” Olivia heaved a sigh of relief as she finally sat down on the padded bench. “Now, I can finally catch some sleep,” she mumbled tiredly to herself.

At the same time, in one of the private rooms at Arsenal’s Medical Base, Asher sat next to Xander’s bed, recounting the early years of their military training and how Viktor from the Reagent family had been caught after the US armies were deployed for assistance.
Then suddenly, Xander’s middle finger twitched.
Instantly, Asher stopped talking as the smile on his face vanished. “Xander?”
There was another twitch. This time, Xander’s fingers curled ever so slightly. Then, a soft, weak groan escaped his lips.
Asher gasped, sitting up straighter, his heart racing as he grabbed his right hand. “Xander! Can you hear me?”
Xander’s eyelids fluttered. Then, slowly, they opened.
At first, his gaze was unfocused, disoriented. His lips parted slightly as if trying to form words. Then, finally, his gaze met Asher’s.
“Aurora…” His voice was hoarse, barely above a whisper.
