Chapter 310: Chapter 310 – The Alpha is on the line
“Alice, are they going to kill us?” one of the children asked, fear evident in her eyes as the sounds of war surrounded them.
Alice never enjoyed these times either, but she would turn eighteen in a few months, gain her wolf, and eventually find her mate.
When that happened, she would have children of her own and would need to comfort them during times like this.
Pushing aside her fears, she put on a calming smile and began to reassure the children under her care.
“No, our warriors are skilled. They will protect us from the enemies.”
In the absence of the Alpha, most people lose hope, and these children were no exception. Alphas and Lunas were always symbols of hope for the pack.
“Alpha is not here. What if I lose my dad?” one of the boys asked, leaving Alice feeling helpless. She had experienced a similar loss when her parents died in a war orchestrated by supernatural forces.
“You won’t lose your dad, okay? Everything will be fine. Who wants more doughnuts?” She shifted their focus to the food she was offering.
“Me, me!” some of the children, especially the boys, eagerly raised their hands and requested doughnuts. Relieved to see the fear dissipate from some of them, she turned her attention to the remaining children.
“Good. There are drinks here too. You know, it’s even better to sleep. By the time you wake up, everything will be over.”
This was her usual approach during times of war. With no one to comfort her after her parents’ deaths, she would force herself to sleep in the safe house, away from the sounds of war.
To her amazement, some of the kids were already practicing the trick and trying to lure themselves to sleep.
Dorothy tended to the elderly, while Alice proved capable of caring for the children. As she attended to them, her phone rang, and seeing that it was Alpha Denzel calling, she quickly answered.
“Alpha.”
“Alice, what is happening at the pack?” Denzel inquired immediately, causing Alice to swallow nervously before recounting the situation.
“There is an attack, so I’m assisting with the children. Is it safe for me to do so?” she asked, fearing that the Alpha might instruct her otherwise. However, Denzel had a different response.
“Of course, it’s safe for you to help, but I need you to do something for me,” Denzel requested, sparking excitement in Alice as she felt useful to the pack for the first time since her arrival.
“Anything, Alpha.”
“Alright, can you check if someone is using strange powers in the pack?” Denzel asked, to which Alice disclosed,
“I sensed the presence of a sorcerer earlier.”
Upon hearing this, Denzel understood why Godic had warned him not to answer any questions.
It was evident to him that Burke was under some sort of spell or influence. While Denzel was accustomed to encountering individuals with supernatural abilities, Burke was not.
“Can you move to a different location?” he asked, and Alice promptly agreed.
“Okay.” She then informed Dorothy, who was in another part of the safe house, “Dotty, I don’t feel well. I need to retrieve something from my room.”
“Alright. Rest. The other warriors will assist,” Dorothy replied quickly. Knowing that Alice was physically weaker than most she-wolves, she never intended to overwork her.
Additionally, Alice had pushed herself during training, despite not having fully manifested her wolf, leading to understandable fatigue.
“Alice, please stay,” one of the children she was attending to pleaded. Despite feeling sympathetic, Alice was compelled to obey her Alpha.
Retrieving a candy from her pocket, she handed it to the child. “I will be back,” she reassured the tearful child before hurrying to her room. The girl, upon receiving the candy, ceased crying.
“Alpha, I’m all ears,” Alice said upon reaching her room.
Denzel spoke from the other end of the line. “Alright. The leaders have no defense against charms.”

Excitedly grasping what her Alpha required of her, Alice suggested, “So, do you want me to counter the sorcerer’s powers? I could redirect anything they do back to the rogue warriors.”
Intrigued by her idea, Denzel found it appealing and agreed. At that moment, he was willing to repay her kindness.
“That would be perfect, but won’t it be too much for you? The backlash, I mean.”
“I’ve been trying to use my powers without suffering the consequences, so let me attempt it,” Alice replied, determined not to give him a chance to change his mind.
Denzel realized too late that Alice had deceived him by saying she would try. He had expected her to report back on whether the effect was still present. He then said,
“I will stay on the line.”
After a few moments, Alice suddenly announced, “It’s done.”
Denzel was surprised but also concerned, asking, “How are you feeling?” His anxiety grew when he received no response from her.
“Alice?”
Valerie, equally worried, spoke up since the phone was on speaker mode. “Alice, it’s Valerie. Can you tell us how you are doing?”
Still receiving no response, both Valerie and Denzel were alarmed. Denzel remembered that Alice was with Dorothy and immediately dialed her number.
“Dorothy, go check on Alice.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Dorothy responded in a panicked tone. The fact that the Alpha had called her for such a task indicated a serious issue.
She hurried to Alice’s room and found her unconscious. “Alice, wake up,” she called out three times, receiving no response. Dorothy then dialed Alpha Denzel’s number and informed him, “Alpha, she’s unconscious.”
Denzel and Valerie were both worried, with Denzel regretting pushing Alice to use her powers. However, he remained calm, knowing that her abilities had saved the pack, and was determined to make it up to her.
“How is the war?” he inquired, seeking confirmation that Alice’s actions had indeed been effective, leading to her current state.
“It’s over. The rogue king, his sorcerer and the rest of the rogues have all run away.”
A relief sigh escaped him as he knew that Burke would be free to take care of Alice for the time being.
“Good. Call Burke and tell him to attend to Alice.”
