Chapter 144: Distress Beacon
It was time for dinner so I was cooking for everyone once again.
The both of them were in my room and Amber had only bothered to put on her underwear.
She had a noticeable glow about her after our love making session earlier, something that she seemed to be quite proud of.
Anyway… I tried not to get distracted by her while making dinner.
We were running low on organic ingredients so I decided to use only synthfood to make our meal today.
Lea was watching me with a complicated face.
“I’m guessing today’s dinner would taste rather bad?”
I half turned to her, “Why do you say so?”
“Because today’s dinner is made solely of synthfood, right?”
Amber grinned, “Oh that’s right, you never tasted Tera’s synthfood cooking before. Damn, you got spoiled from the very start.”
Lea gave her an odd look, “What do you mean?”
“Oh just wait and see. I can already guess what your reaction to it might be~”
Lea gave her a weird look, “Should I be worried?”
“Depends on what you’re concerned about~ Maybe if you are worried that you’d get embarrassed, then yes~”
Amber was obviously enjoying teasing Lea as she watched the Alv struggle with deciding if she should still eat my synthfood or not.
I picked up a ladle and tasted the stew I was cooking.
Hmm… Yep, this is good.
I’d like to say that I got better at cooking overall so even my synthfood cooking tasted better than it did the last time.
In the beginning, I was still finding it difficult to make the synthfood taste like organic food rather than just weird tasting cardboard, but now I felt I was getting closer to actually tasty not-so-cardboard.
Perhaps given enough time, I might be able to make them taste the same as the food made from organic ingredients. Which meant the only difference between them might just be the texture of the food itself.
Leaving the stew to simmer for a few more minutes, I took the bowls that Amber had already prepared for me and arranged them in a row.
Lea was watching me intently as I started filling the bowls up with the pseudo chicken and cabbage stew, the Alv still making that complicated face wondering if it was going to be really good or really bad..
Once I had prepared a bowl of stew for each of us, I passed a bowl to each of them and settled down to start eating the stew.
Hmm… Yep, this is pretty good for something made using pure synthfood.
I turned to see what the other two thought about it.
Amber was making moaning sounds while scooping spoonfuls of the stew into her mouth, which was basically just the usual.
As for Lea…
Err… She’s currently sobbing while holding the bowl of stew in her hands.
“This… This is a miracle… Something like this… Could actually be made with just synthfood…”
I’m not even going to say anything since I know how bad they could taste originally personally.

Lea wiped away her tears and turned to me, “How did Captain even manage to do something like this? I had thought that the deliciousness might have come from the fact that organic ingredients were used in the making of the previous dishes but… For such a masterpiece to be created even without it… This is beyond what I can imagine.”
Amber paused while eating her stew to look at her, “Isn’t it obvious? It’s definitely because Tera has magic fingers! Anything she touches with her hands will turn magical!”
I waved at her, “No, no, no. That’s definitely not true.”
“Oh really? But I think the way you made me cum earlier with those fingers was certainly magical though?” She moaned, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively at me.
I rolled my eyes, “I’m saying that I’m not at that level yet for my cooking.”
“I’d still kill anyone who tries to steal this away from me though~ Except you of course, Tera~”
“I will have to agree with her as well,” Lea added from the side, letting out another moan as she scooped another spoonful of the stew into her mouth.
These two sure have a sense of humour at least.
Just as I was about to point out that they were exaggerating, my Codex let out a notification beep that got my attention.
I pulled up the screen to check what it was and frowned when I saw the source of the notification.
It seems like my ship’s sensors have received a distress beacon that was currently broadcasting a call for help in the area.
I looked at Amber who was also making a complicated face at me when she saw the notification on her own personal terminal.
“I assume that we need to go check that out?”
She grimaced, “Not exactly… We could just ignore it if we want to since we have no obligation to help.”
Lea turned to her, “Or it could actually be someone in need of help that we can get a reward from. You know? Like some merchant vessel that had encountered some pirates?”
Amber clapped her hands together, “Oh!! And we could then extort… I mean ask the merchant for a reward for saving them! That’s a great idea Lea!”
… She definitely said ‘extort’ just now, didn’t she? I’m not even going to comment on that…
I stood up and left behind my half eaten stew, “I’ll go change our course to check the distress beacon out then.”
Amber gave me a serious look, “It could also be a trap as well, Tera. Let’s just get close to the location and observe from a distance first.”
I agreed with her so we left the room and returned to the cockpit of my ship.
Amber would be joining us in our ship for this since it would be easier for us to run away if it turned out to be a trap instead of being separated.
I took my place in the pilot’s seat while Lea and Amber took the two extra chairs in the cockpit, the both of them still unwilling to leave the food I made behind and we’re wolfing down their portions of it even now.
Switching off the autopilot, I redirected my ship to start travelling towards the direction of where I received the distress beacon.
As the location got closer and closer, I waited until we were within visual distance of the distress beacon before switching off the ship’s travel drives and bringing it back to normal cruising speeds.
Looking at the place where the signal had originated from, we found what appeared to be a half-destroyed ship with a broken engine floating in the middle of some debris.
Judging by what I can see, it looks like a B Class Gunship.
For some reason, this ship looked quite familiar to me but I have no idea where I had seen it before.
I pushed forward on my thrusters and got closer to the derelict ship, making sure that my weapons and shields were also fully operational before I did so.
That was when Lea let out a gasp, “Captain, that’s one of the Mercenary ships that had been part of the team escorting the client two days ago!”
Oh! Now that she mentioned it, it’s that Merc ship that crashed into a drone during our fight! I thought that this ship might have been toast after an explosion like that.
And for a distress beacon to be active, it meant that the pilot or even someone from the crew was alive to activate it!
I turned to look at the two girls behind me, “What should we do? Should we rescue them?”
“Try sending them a message,” Amber suggested.
I turned back to my console and did just that, pushing the button to broadcast to all available channels within range.
“Hello? Is anybody still alive in there? We got your distress signal.”
I waited for a moment, receiving only static in response.
I tried again, “Hello? If there’s anyone there please respond.”
Still static.
I was just about to call it a bust when a desperate voice came from the other side.
“Yes! I’m here! Please send help! Oh god, you need decompression suits! I’m stuck in the cockpit right now and the glass is slowly cracking open! Please send help quickly!! Help!!”
I turned to the girls and they were looking back at me with concern on their faces.
They were obviously leaving the decision of whether we’re rescuing him up to me.
The fact that he said we needed decompression suits meant that most of the ship must have been wrecked. I’m surprised he was even still alive right now.
Well fuck it, we’ve come so far anyway so might as well just go and save him.
We could also loot his ship as a reward afterwards anyway, right?
Ahem… I mean recover some of his stuff while letting him give us some stuff as a reward.
I turned back to the console, “Hold on tight, I’m coming.”
