Chapter 302: Helping With Mara’s Drop
Lea and Amber had to reschedule their deliveries since we would be heading out right now.
The good thing was that the ship was already stocked and resupplied and the fact that Ries actually expedited the delivery on her ship parts meant that we were fully capable of handling a combat mission right now.
As our ship cruised towards the location of where Mara’s drop was, my new Maochatte lover was in the workshop busy making sure that all the new drones that she had unpacked were working perfectly.
Amber was out in the hangar doing some checks on her own ship while Lea was manning the guns as usual.
As for Mara, she took over the communications station partly to replace Ries and partly to give me more information about the place.
She had just gotten off a call with some other people and I got to watch a really pissed Mara tear those guys a new asshole for not informing her about this.
Apparently they thought Mara would have already known about this since she’s an information broker and would keep tabs on her own drops, but it seems like Mara wasn’t watching this one in particular.
She had explained to me privately after getting off one of the earlier calls that these drops of hers were just side hustles and she didn’t pay much attention to them since she doesn’t do trades that often.
I’m guessing those smugglers must have thought that they could claim it for themselves and Mara might just deem them too troublesome to kick out when she finds out about it.
“Fucking useless cunts,” The doctor cursed, still looking the most pissed I’ve seen her.
No wait, I think she was more pissed back when she was confronting that guy who tried to shove me away from the front of her clinic.
I cleared my throat, “Right… So err… What are we dealing with here?”
Mara turned to me, “As I mentioned, the location itself is a group of asteroids a distance away from the station. It’s a neutral drop for smugglers to deliver, pick up and do trade as long as they are affiliated with me.”
“You mean that only people you approve can use that drop?” I asked.
“Something like that. And before you ask… No, I don’t police it, so sometimes smugglers not affiliated with me would also use it but I don’t really care. There are other drops belonging to other people who would police those drops.”
Sounds like a whole other can of worms about the underground trade that I’m not willing to dive into at the moment.
Mara continued, “Anyway… From what I managed to gather, those smugglers have managed to park one of their larger ships on the asteroid itself and turned it into a base. I fully suspect that this was masterminded by someone else who wishes to fuck with me because they managed to build a fortress in such a short amount of time. They definitely have a sponsor for this.”
I gave her a worried look, “A fortress? Will we be alright?”
“We’ll be fine. The guns they used are meant to repel small ships that smugglers would use to sneak past scanners, not a fully armed combat freighter that has the firepower and capacity to fight ships twice its size.”
Right, that puts me at ease… I wouldn’t want our new ship to get blasted apart so quickly after getting it…
“So what’s the plan?” I asked.
She gestured to me and walked towards the map display behind me, prompting me to get out of my Captain’s seat to join her.
She connected to the display with her personal terminal and a hologram of a group of rocks with a rather large building built on top of one of them could be seen.
Mara pointed towards the building, “They made use of the asteroid itself to build the base to save on the building time and cost. As far as those idiots managed to find out, their primary defences come from the automated turrets located in these five places and also the weapons on the ship that they have decommissioned to transform it into this base.”
Five turrets appeared on the hologram itself and it looks like they were arranged in such a way that no matter which direction you approached the base from, you would have to face at least three of those turrets.
“Do you know what type of guns they are using on those turrets?” I asked, tapping on my Codex to connect to a certain Maochatte.
Mara tapped on her screen and a window popped up, showing a picture of the turret.
Ries’s voice came from my Codex, “That’s a ZZ-eight-seven autocannon. They can deal with missiles, torpedoes and even fighters and bombers, but they’re definitely not designed to take on a ship that’s above B Class. Plus, their effective range is way, way lower than our railguns.”
Lea then spoke up without any prompting, “I will be able to take those guns out from a distance, Mistress.”
That’s definitely reassuring.

We should be able to approach the asteroid from the opposite side of the base and attack from there.
I nodded, “Alright. Then let’s do that. I will bring our ship to a stop near the drop and we’ll prepare to take out the turrets from a distance. Then Amber and I will take our own ships to approach the base and once we are in range of their defences, Lea will shoot them down and we’ll board them to clear them out. This ship will remain at a distance to provide security in case other ships show up and they aren’t friendly.”
Mara looked at me seriously, “You’re also going in there?”
I raised an eyebrow, “What? Were you expecting to squeeze into Amber’s ship to board the place? Of course I’m going with you. Plus, with a base like that, you’ll be expecting at least two dozen or so smugglers in there as well. Are you really thinking that I’ll just let you and Amber fight through that number by yourselves?”
“Hmm… I see… It seems like Amber was right about this…” Mara muttered almost inaudibly, looking down at her hands.
Eh? Right about what?
I was just about to ask her that when she lifted her head to look at me, “Let’s do it then. That’s a quite solid plan. Just saying, I will be trying to blow up the base and the asteroids as well. So do be careful of that.”
“Wait, you’re going to destroy it?”
“Of course. That thing is a testament to the disrespect given to me just for allowing it to be built. The person behind it must have wanted my reputation to be hit and to cast doubts on my own information network. The only way to get rid of this humiliation is to send an even bigger message where I blow the entire thing up completely.”
Ok… Fair enough…
Right then, a notification message came from my Captain’s seat, indicating that we were coming close to our destination.
Oh wow, that was pretty fast… Or time just passed by so quickly that I didn’t even know half a day had already passed.
I was just about to return to my seat when the map display in front of me changed to show the area around us and, sure enough, there was a group of asteroids a distance away.
That was fine since that was what we expected, but what was not fine was the fact that there were six ships currently orbiting the asteroid field and all six of them seemed to be B Class heavy fighters.
Another sound came from the side, this time from the communications panel, indicating someone was trying to contact us.
Both Mara and I quickly returned to our stations and Mara checked the console to turn back to me, “We’re being hailed by one of the ships orbiting that asteroid, Tera.”
I nodded at her to patch them through and she manipulated the console to prompt a screen to appear in front of me.
There was a scarred middle aged man with a cybernetic left eye glaring at me.
“Hey. Don’t know who you are but you better get lost. This place is our turf now.”
I decided to play along, “Isn’t this supposed to be a neutral drop that is under err… Whisper Tale?”
“Not anymore. So if you know what’s good for you, fuck off right now or else you’re going to leave full of holes!”
I heard a voice from my Codex whispering, “She can fuck my holes…”
Oh… I didn’t know Amber was connected to the call…
Ahem.
I raised my hands, “Alright, alright. We’ll leave… Just err… Let me turn my ship around ok?”
“Whatever.”
He shut off the call and I slowly powered down the Travel Drives of my ship.
I then initiated the auxiliary thrusters that turned my ship’s broadside towards the asteroid and…
“Lea?”
“We are within range, Mistress.”
“Perfect. Fire at will.”
And she pulled the trigger.
