Chapter 304: She’s One Of Them
We had to land our ship outside the ship-turned-base of the smugglers since there wasn’t exactly a place to dock on the ship itself.
I tugged on the spacesuit as the doors cycled closed to vent out the air in preparation of opening us out into space.
“Ready?” I asked Mara who was similarly dressed beside me.
She gave me a wry smile from behind her helmet, “Isn’t it a little too late to ask a question like that?”
I suppose that’s true… Although I would say the option of just turning around and flying off still exists but I’ll just keep my mouth shut.
I activated the airlocks and the door cycled open, revealing the barren landscape of the asteroid in front of us.
Amber was already outside in her own spacesuit waiting for her like always.
Seriously, I have a feeling she just wants to make sure she’s always the first I see when exiting my ship if she wasn’t with me to begin with.
“Hello, hello~ Can you hear me?” Amber’s voice came from within my helmet’s comms.
“Reading you loud and clear. Can you hear me?”
She gave me a thumbs up, “Got you too. Shall we?”
I jumped off the ramp, letting the feeling of the low gravity of the asteroid take me as I slowly descended towards the ground.
We turned towards the building in the distance and we started hopping our way towards it, making use of the low gravity environment to our advantage.
I had my gun out just in case they decided to rush out of the base to fight us while outside but it seems like I didn’t need to worry about that as that didn’t happen.
We managed to reach the base without anyone stopping us and we found the airlock into the base easily enough.
“It’s locked,” Mara announced when she walked up to the control panel.
I stepped up to it, “Let me.”
Bringing my arm close to the panel, my Codex connected to it wirelessly and I managed to hack into it through the holographic screen that it projected.
It didn’t take me long before the doors started to cycle open and we stepped inside the smuggler’s base.
“I didn’t know you could hack that well too, Tera,” Mara asked as the door cycled closed and the air started being vented in.
“It’s just my personal terminal,” I explained, taking off my helmet as soon as the venting was completed.
We quickly stripped off our spacesuit before stacking up against the other door, myself and Amber leading the way and Mara following behind me.
“Alright… So plan?” I asked.
Mara sucked in a breath, “Find their control room or anything that might give us information and proof of who got these guys to come here and set this place up in the first place. Try to keep some of them alive for interrogation later.”
I turned to Amber, “Think we can do that?”
She smirked at me, “Pfft, easy. Let’s do this. First we find a terminal you can hack into to get the ship’s map right?”
“That would make navigating this place easier.”
“Alright, let’s go then. Ready?”
I gave her a nod and she hit the button to activate the door, prompting it to cycle open.
The moment the door slid open, both Amber and I stepped out with our guns up, checking that the coast was clear.

The door had opened up to a recreation room of sorts with couches and what appeared to be game consoles.
There were still half-eaten synthfood left on the table and empty bottles of beer strewn about the place. Whoever these guys are, they obviously have pretty bad hygiene.
“Would that work?” Amber asked, pointing to one of the control panels near the wall.
Worth a shot.
I went over to the panel and connected my Codex to it while the other two stood watch. There was only one door leading out of the room so they just needed to watch that door.
As I started to crack into the security, that door suddenly opened and two armed men strode in.
“–so we just shoot them on sight.”
Amber and Mara fired at the same time.
The one on the left immediately got his head blown off while the other guy managed to survive thanks to his shield.
He reacted quickly by diving for cover behind a couch, avoiding the next few shots that were fired at him.
His frantic voice came from behind the couch, “We’ve got a breach! They’re already inside! I repeat, they’re already in–”
Amber dashed out of her cover and leapt over the couch, surprising the guy.
She then grabbed him by the head and smashed him into the ground, knocking him out cold.
“Interrogation material obtained~” She smirked, already working on stripping him of his weapons and shield before tying him up.
I disconnected my Codex from the terminal and projected the map of the ship into the air.
Seems like there were two floors and we were currently on the first one at the bottom right corner of the map.
Mara pointed to the room at the end of the first floor opposite of where we were, “There… Captain’s quarters. There might be information there… Otherwise we would have to go to the bridge on the second floor to look instead.”
I nodded, “Right, let’s move then. Before they swarm this place and we get overrun.”
Amber picked up the unconscious dude and tossed him inside a cabinet before shutting him in there, using a metal rod nearby to stick it through the handle to prevent him from opening it in case he wakes up.
We stepped out of the room and let the door close behind us, finding ourselves in what looked like the cargo hold of the ship before it was turned into a base.
There were still a number of crates stacked around here which I assume was their supplies and their trade goods that they were storing here.
What I didn’t understand was that everything was piled haphazardly and it looked like they just dumped the crates wherever there was space, blocking out the pathways and forcing us to need to walk around them.
Aren’t you guys supposed to be smugglers? As in… Your business relies on all this stuff right? Shouldn’t you guys be treating your goods with more care than this?
Unless… The smuggler identity was just a cover in the first place?
Damn… Did they really set this all up for Mara? What if she decided to just not bother coming here to deal with it? Wouldn’t all this just be a waste?
While I was thinking about that, I heard the sound of another door sliding open and the sound of several footsteps resonating from that direction.
Guess they got here faster than we thought…
I hid behind one of the crates while the other two girls also did the same, waiting for the group to appear from behind the piles of supplies.
Judging by the sound of the footsteps, I think there were at least eight to ten of them heading our way.
At least I don’t hear the metallic clanking sound of power armour stomping towards us.
I held my gun tightly right as the first guy rounded the corner, unaware that we were waiting in ambush.
Amber started sneaking further in front to flank them while I waited behind my cover with Mara beside me.
As soon as the entire group was in view, I popped out with my shotgun and fired a round into the lead guy, blasting him in the face even before he could react to my presence.
Amber also popped out from her cover and fired her dual pistols at the smugglers following at the back, killing one and wounding a second before they scrambled for cover.
I had to duck behind my crate as one of them started shooting in my direction to cover his friends before he dove for cover himself.
Unfortunately for him, his friends did not cover his retreat so I leaned out to pop a shotgun blast into his chest, blowing the guy’s torso open.
Several gunshots rang out and my shield flared to life as it protected me from a few that managed to hit it, prompting me to take cover once again.
I loaded in two more buckshot rounds into my shotgun when something suddenly exploded above me, the force of the explosion enough to cause the ground underneath me to shake.
Damn… Looks like one of them was using explosives… Do they not care about blowing all this stuff up?
There was a loud groan and I looked up to see the large and heavy crates above me tipping over like a tidal wave.
Oh fuck!
Dive for cover? No! Mara is still there! What do I– Eh?
The world seemed to stop as the crates froze in place in the air.
I almost thought I was experiencing the same thing where time seemed to slow down until I realised Mara had her hand stretched towards the falling crates.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out she was the one who stopped them.
Does this mean… She’s a Psionic?
