Chapter 307: Even Psionics Need Help Sometimes
I fired another shot at the next closest smuggler, blowing his face off before shifting my aim to the next guy and pulling the trigger.
I frowned when I saw a shield materialise around him to block my shot so I quickly ducked back into cover and slipped a shield buster round into my shotgun, using the attachment to move it right behind the buckshot that was already chambered.
“What?! Why isn’t she alone?!” I heard someone shout.
Hmm… Guess they weren’t expecting her to bring friends? Guess this works in our favour.
A soft thump came from the side and I turned to see someone leaping over my cover to point his rifle at me.
Oh wow, he actually took the initiative to attack me?
But seriously, you’re engaging someone with a shotgun in close combat? Are you serious?
He fired two shots aimed at my chest but my shield protected me from getting hit.
The guy probably didn’t think I had a shield and was a little late in reacting so I could blast him with a buckshot round before he could respond.
His own shield flared to life to protect him but my next shot completely shattered it while he was still trying to break my shield with his rifle.
He got a little desperate when he realised his shield was broken so he tried to lunge for me.
Unfortunately for him, my shotgun was already pointed at his abdomen so I just pulled the trigger again.
His midsection got completely eviscerated and the force of the blast sent him flying back to crash into the wall.
Yuck… Some of his blood splattered on me. Gonna need to wash myself thoroughly after this…
I heard cries coming out from the opposite side and I didn’t need to look to know that Amber was absolutely wrecking havoc over there.
I also continued my own slaughter as I leapt out of cover to look for my next target, which I didn’t need to look very far since I found one guy trying to crouch walk towards me.
He froze as soon as he saw me pop out so I went ahead to pop him in the head with a buckshot round before stepping over his corpse to advance.
A few shots came my way but my shield helped me block them as I shot another guy in the chest but realised he had a shield as well.
A figure leapt towards me and I was forced to back away right as a blade cut through where I had been earlier.
In front of me was a woman with an arm blade popping out from her right arm who clucked her tongue at me when she realised I managed to avoid her attack.
I levelled my shotgun at her and fired but she also had a shield so it had no effect on her.
Another blade popped out from her left arm and she lunged towards me with both blades pointed at my chest.
I gritted my teeth and stepped aside, firing my shotgun again at the hip at her that would have blasted her in her side.
But that shield of hers seems to be much stronger than a normal shield as it once again tanked it with no signs of breaking.
I saw her arm swinging towards me and I bent backwards on instinct, letting the blade sail right over me,
In that position, I pulled the trigger again. But because of that unstable position, I ended up falling on my butt from the recoil of the shotgun.
That turned out to be a blessing as the recoil also sent me skidding back a few feet which brought me out of range from the next slash of her blade.
She tried to lunge at me with one of her arm blades while I was down but I had already pulled out my vibration knife and used it to deflect the blade to the side, letting it strike the ground beside my head.
Before she could pull it out, she froze when she felt the barrel of my shotgun press against her abdomen from below.
“Get fucked,” I spat at her.

I didn’t give her a chance to plead for her life before I fired my shotgun, blowing a hole in her midsection and sending her flying back, bypassing her shield’s defences entirely.
I rolled back into cover just as a few of the smugglers fired at me since there wasn’t danger of them hitting their own colleague anymore.
Taking a moment to sheathe my blade and loading a few more shells into my shotgun, I popped back out again to take a few pot shots at where the bullets had come flying from.
Most of my shots went wide but it was enough to force them to take cover but I did manage to get lucky and nail one guy in the shoulder.
As I moved around the edges of the room to get closer to my targets, another guy leapt out from the corner to tackle me back.
I felt something press against my side and my instinct once again screamed at me to move and I obeyed.
I swung my arm and smashed the butt of my gun straight into my attacker’s jaw, knocking him back and causing the pistol he had pressed against me to fire into the ground instead.
Since our distance was still too close, I slammed my elbow forward and smashed it into his abdomen, forcing him back a few steps.
I then proceeded to fire a round at him, only to see a shield materialise in front of him to protect him.
I thus went ahead to try and empty the rest of my shells on him but I only managed to squeeze in two more shots before he recovered and kicked my shotgun out of my hands.
You bastard!
Unfortunately, I did not have time to try and catch it because he was trying to shoot me with his pistol again by getting closer to me to negate my shield’s protection.
I drew my own pistol from my holster while also pulling out my knife at the same time, causing him to pause as he alternated his gaze between my knife and my gun.
He then looked up at me, “Why are you helping her?”
Guess he decided that force wasn’t helping so he was trying the diplomatic approach?
I jerked my chin at him, “I should ask why did you set this trap for her?”
He frowned, “For you to ask this question… That means you have no idea who you’re up against huh? I’m guessing you’re hired Mercs? Then there’s no need for us to fight. We’ll pay you double of what she’s paying if you just step aside.”
“Even after I killed pretty much all your men?”
“Yes. They are expendable and I already expected to lose them to her anyway. I will even put in a good word to my client if you just step aside right now.”
“Why do you even want her?”
“Sorry, but that’s confidential. We can pay you three times just to step aside and not ask any questions, how about that?”
I straightened myself, “Alright. Then in that case… I’ll take your life.”
He was in the midst of relaxing himself when he saw me straightening but tensed up again when he heard my words.
Too late though because I nodded at the space behind him and he realised he got tricked right before Amber fired her pistol into his head from behind.
She had already wiped out everyone else during our short talk and he didn’t even realise he was the last one standing on his side.
“Nice~ I would have been fine with leaving Mara here for money though,” Amber grinned.
I know she was lying but I decided not to call her out on it.
Though now we have another problem…
I turned back to look at Mara who was struggling to keep the metal block above her.
“How do we deal with that?”
Amber pointed to the top of the metal box, “There… I see ropes attached to the top… There must be a control somewhere that can pull it back up. They were really planning to take her alive anyway so there’s no way they would crush her with this.”
Great, where can we even find a control like that?
Wait…
I looked down at the dead guy who had his brains blown out and realised his voice matched the guy who had been talking to Mara before we stormed in. That meant this should be the leader of this group and probably the guy who activated the trap in the first place.
I flipped him onto his back and tried my best to ignore his blown out brains that flopped onto the floor and started searching through his clothes until I found his personal terminal.
Tapping on the screen, I found it still had a window open that had a control system where one of the buttons was labelled ‘Retract’.
Well that’s convenient.
I tapped on it and the ropes on the metal box immediately went taut and started pulling it upwards.
Nice.
I would say that turned out well?
