Chapter 310: Good Thing We Did Not Stay
The Credits I got from all the Credit chips totaled up to about two and a half million Credits.
Not a bad haul if I say so myself.
Putting that aside, I’m waiting for the smuggler that Mara introduced to dock his ship with mine.
Of course I made sure to check with Mara that it was indeed the smuggler we were supposed to contact and she assured me that it was him.
She also called him up to make sure although he was a little hesitant to come close since he saw us bombarding the asteroid.
After being assured that it was us and that we were simply cleaning up the place, he eventually manoeuvred beside us and started his docking sequence.
Mara and I were standing in the cargo bay, the crates filled with White Powder already set aside in preparation for the smuggler to take off our hands.
Amber was in the security room just in case anything happens but with Mara here, I doubt anything bad would happen.
Lea was still on the bridge while Ries had gone back to the workshop to resume her own work.
The Maochatte had a really satisfied look on her face so I guess she really enjoyed the sight of the asteroid being blown up into pieces.
The airlock doors made hissing sounds as our external hatches locked onto each other before it cycled open.
From the other ship, a person wearing a long coat and what looked like a gas mask stepped through hurriedly while two other persons Wearing almost the same outfit followed behind.
I raised an eyebrow at Mara, silently asking if this was really the person she wanted me to do business with.
Her only response was to just smile at me.
Right… I guess there’s a theme going on with their group or something…
The omelette whom I presumed to be the leader quickly came up to us, “Hello, hello. Sorry about the tardiness…”
I nodded at him, “Hello there. I’m–”
He quickly waved his hands, “Ah, sorry. No names. That’s my first rule. Also our faces can’t be seen, that’s the second rule. I hope you understand.”
Ok… That explains quite a bit I guess?
He then pointed to the boxes near me, “Err… That’s the White Powder, right? I have the money prepared here.”
He reached into his cloak and pulled out a small box which he opened carefully to reveal twenty silver Credit Chips.
Assuming each of these Credit Chips were maxed out, that’s twenty million Credits right there.
Mara shifted her gaze to me and I knew that was the signal.
I went over to pop open one of the boxes to reveal the packets of White Powder inside, “Do you want to take a look?”
“Yes, all of them if you don’t mind?”
I went ahead to pop open the other box as well and he came forward and started inspecting the bags inside the boxes.
In the meantime, I checked that the Credit Chips in the case he brought totaled up to twenty million Credits by plugging them into my Codex and it seems like the money was indeed all there.
He took one packet out and his other hand reached inside his coat to take out a pocket knife which he used to make a small cut on the bag itself.
He then kept the knife back in his cloak before reaching up to the mask and flipping open one of the valve thingies which revealed his mouth.
The smuggler carefully dipped a finger into the incision he made before bringing it up to his mouth to taste.

He smacked his lips for a moment before nodding, “This is good stuff. We’ll take it.”
Mara tilted her head at him, “You speak as if you even had an option of refusing in the first place.”
The smuggler shuddered, “Right… Forget I said anything… Ahem… Take them back to the ship.”
The two masked persons following him started walking towards the boxes until Mara stepped in front of them with her hand outstretched.
“Hold on. Where’s the Credits they bribed you with?”
The Smuggler visibly flinched and grasped his hands together in a pleading gesture, “Please… We really, really need that money… I took out a loan for a ship module that I’m already late on the payment for… If I don’t pay them back soon, I’ll be a dead man!”
“And you’ll be selling this White Powder for a profit, won’t you? I fail to see the problem?”
He shook his head, “I’ll only be able to arrange buyers for this after several days… By then I would already be dead!”
Mara frowned, “How much debt are you in?”
“Ugh… Five million Credits…”
“There’s no way those people gave you five million Credits to shut your mouth up.”
“No… They gave me a million Credits. That would at least help me extend my deadline so I can sell off this White Powder and pay off the rest.”
Mara tapped on the side of her cheek for a moment before huffing, “Fine. As I said, you owe me two favours. I’ll let you off the hook for now.”
He actually bowed to her, “Thank you! Thank you! You won’t regret this!”
“I already am. Just take it and go.”
They quickly took the boxes of White Powder and carried it back to their ship.
I raised an eyebrow at Mara, “That was cute.”
“What?”
“I thought you might have just made him cough up the money anyway.”
She shrugged, “I would have, but I was reading his thoughts. He was telling the truth and it seems like he would have not only lost his ship but also a hand if he didn’t pay back a part of the loan in the next two days.”
Oh right, I forgot she was telepathic.
We waited until the smugglers went back to their ship and the airlock cycled closed before leaving the cargo hold to head back towards the bridge.
“Everything went well, I take it?” Amber asked as we entered the security room.
I nodded, “Got the money and they already left with the White Powder.”
“Huh, I was expecting a shoot out at the very least.”
Mara scoffed, “Do you have that little faith in my contacts?”
“This one betrayed you, last I remembered?”
Oof… She got you there Mara…
And it looks like she realises that as well since she was visibly annoyed at that and chose not to say anything.
We headed back to the bridge together and I took my place at the Captain’s chair once again with Mara taking over the comms and Amber standing behind me at the navigation console.
“Alright, let’s set a course back to Theeve,” I ordered.
“Aye, Captain~ Setting a course back to Theeve~” Amber chirped happily.
The smuggler’s ship had already detached itself from us and we moved away from each other, manoeuvring our ships to point ourselves in the direction we’re travelling.
“Think he’ll shoot at us as we leave?” Amber asked, watching the smuggler’s ship turn away from us.
I didn’t even get to answer before Lea spoke up, “I am prepared to fire at them in the event that they do.”
Woah, girls… You really don’t trust them that much huh?
When I received the notification that we were ready to begin our journey back to Theeve station, I primed our engines and felt inertia push me back into my seat as we started accelerating towards our destination.
The smuggler ship was also doing the same and I was watching them go when, without warning, a blue flash of light came out of nowhere.
My eyes widened in shock as the laser beam pierced through the smuggler’s ship, cutting it completely into two.
Their engines sputtered and died before an explosion occurred, sending the two halves of the ship spiralling out of control and into the darkness of space.
A split second later, a second laser pierced through the remains of the asteroid, obliterating what was left of it and leaving nothing else behind.
“Tera!! Go, now!!!” Mara cried out.
You don’t need to tell me twice!
I pushed all power to engines and our ship lurched forward as I activated the afterburners, rocketing us away from the area.
I held my breath, expecting a third laser to fire at us but aside from the first two, no other lasers were fired.
As soon as I received the notification that our Travel Drives were ready, I slammed my hand on the button and the remains of the asteroid and the smuggler’s ship rapidly disappeared behind us.
Mara was cursing in her seat, “Fuck!! They must have given him one of the Credit Chips that they were tracking to target him with an ultra long range laser!!”
“They… Also shot at the base…” I pointed out.
“Those bastards must have sent a message during the fight that they could not beat me and they fired at the base to take me out with it!”
“I thought… They wanted you alive?”
She gritted her teeth, “I would have survived that…”
“Even… In space?”
“Even in space,” She confirmed.
Damn… Good thing we did not stay behind then…
