Chapter 326: Who Is Up For Some Poker?
“The poker table,” Mara decided while I was still looking around the place.

I raised an eyebrow at her, “You’re intending to use ‘that’ to win, aren’t you?”

She smiled mischievously at me, “Naturally. What’s the point of having it and not using it?”

“As long as we don’t get caught I guess…”

Mara chuckled, “Don’t worry. In the outer colonies, people like me are treated more like urban legends instead. Almost everyone here could go their entire life without meeting a Psionic.”

I suppose nobles like her would usually stay in the inner colonies where it’s more comfortable instead of out in the middle of nowhere like Denibi.

And even if there were, they won’t announce themselves either so you might even be near one and not know that they were Psionic at all.

Case in point, Mara.

“So what’s the plan?” I asked as we made our way to the poker tables. “I just play my hands normally while you use your telepathy to get winning hands on the opponents?”

She nodded, “I can’t read your mind anyway, Captain, so you’ll just play your hand using your own judgement while I’ll work on swiping the other players.”

“Works for me.”

The both of us went over to the poker table that Mara was staring at earlier, both of us nodding at the four other players at the table before we took the last two spots at the table.

Only one of them nodded back in greeting, two of them openly leered at us and the last one completely ignored us.

I could see that this table was the high rollers table since there were quite a lot of chips in front of all four players and when Mara and I took out our cases to place our chips in front of us, all four of them shot us looks of disdain.

But it seems like it wasn’t against the rules since the dealer did not kick us out and the four players also kept their mouths shut.

They were still in the middle of a game so we had to wait until this round was over before we could buy in.

Thus, I took the chance to look at our four vict– Ahem… Four opponents.

The one that nodded at us was a middle aged woman wearing a rather tight red dress seated at the other end of the table smoking on a cigarette.

Beside her was a bald guy wearing a beige suit with facial tattoos on one side of his face that ended at his cybernetic eyepiece.

After him was a bearded old guy who was also wearing a suit but his was bright purple and he even had what looked like an oversized cowboy hat on his head.

The last man was clearly a Merc with his sleeveless leather jacket that revealed his cybernetic arms and I managed not to stare at his mohawk.

As for the dealer, he was a rather young looking guy wearing a black vest that made his blonde hair stand out quite a bit.

The dealer made the final call and it looked like only the purple and beige suit guys were still in the game and they were in the midst of revealing their hands.

I didn’t even need to look at their cards to know who won because not only did the beige suit guy let out a curse and smacked the table with his fist, the surface of the table also lit up to display a holographic projection to show the winning combination that belonged to the guy in the purple suit.

The dealer used a stick to move the pot to the guy in the purple suit before turning to nod at us in acknowledgement of us joining the game.

The blinds were shifted to the girl being the big blind and the cards were then handed out.

I picked up the two cards that were slid over to me.

A two of clubs and two of hearts.

I winced before quickly hiding my expression, mentally berating myself for forgetting about keeping my poker face.

I wasn’t sure if anyone saw it since everyone else looked like they had also just finished looking at their own cards and set them down on the table.

The dealer looked intently at Mara, waiting for her decision on whether to call or fold.

She seemed to consider for a moment before placing ten chips on the table, matching the big blind.

The dealer then shifted his gaze to me and I figured it would be lame if I were to just fold on the first round so I placed ten chips as well.

I wasn’t too worried about losing since I was sure that Mara would be able to win this anyway so even if I were to lose this to the pot, she would win it back.

The others also chose to call so everyone was in the game since the woman did not raise her bet.

The dealer thus started with the flop, placing three cards on the table which all of us watched intently.

A king of diamonds, a two of diamonds and a two of spades.

I managed to maintain my facial features and not give away anything.

The dealer gestured to the Mara who proceeded to rapt her knuckles on the table.

That brought the attention to me where I had to think about whether this was a good time to raise.

Would it scare them away? Most likely…

Fine.

“Check,” I said aloud.

“I raise,” The guy beside me announced, placing ten more chips in front of him.

Oh, I didn’t even need to be the one who raised the pot.

“I call.”

“I call as well.”

“Same here.”

That brought it back to Mara who wordlessly placed ten more chips on the table as well, matching their bets.

I mirrored her and did the same, trying my best to keep myself from giving away anything.

The dealer then dealt the next card.

A queen of diamonds.

Mara picked up fifty chips and placed them on the table in front of her.

I followed her lead and placed fifty chips as well.

The Merc guy wasn’t pulling any punches though as he scoffed at us before counting out his chips and pushing them out of his pile.

“I raise two hundred chips.”

Damn bro… Do you know how hard is it for me to stop myself from smiling right now?

The purple suit guy pushed an even larger stack forward, “I raise another hundred chips on top of that.”

Damn… This is getting expensive… For them I mean.

Surprisingly, the others also called and so did Mara. So either they had worse cards than her or she knows they were bluffing.

Once everyone had matched the new bet, the dealer dealt the final card, a Jack of diamonds.

Ah fuck…

If someone has a straight flush, I’m fucked.

Oh wait, Mara should have it right? That’s why she’s been so confident!

I was a little worried when Mara hesitated before rapping her knuckles on the table to check.

Wait… She’s not raising? Does that mean she doesn’t have a straight flush?

I also went to knock my knuckles on the table and the Merc immediately pushed another pile onto the table.

“Raise, two hundred chips.”

The purple suit guy and the woman in the red dress also followed but the beige suit guy ended up folding.

I was considering on folding as well when Mara threw two hundred chips into the pot.

Oh, that means she could definitely beat him!

You know what, since I’m already in this, I’m calling as well.

The pot was now sitting at two thousand nine hundred and twenty chips, as expected of the high stakes table.

Once all the chips were gathered, we were instructed to open our cards.

The Merc was the first to do so as he flipped over his cards with a confident air.

“Got a flush here!” He yelled out proudly, showing his Ace of diamonds and Ace of hearts.

The table also reflected his claim, projecting his cards into the air to show his combination and the current winner.

The woman at the end sighed, flipping over her cards to reveal a ten of spades and ten of hearts.

The purple suit guy let out a roar of frustration as he flipped over his cards to show an Ace of spades and Ace of clubs.

The guy who folded chose not to show his cards so I don’t know what his hand was but he seemed relieved by his decision to fold so I knew he didn’t have a winning hand.

I turned to Mara to see her flipping over a King of hearts and King of clubs.

The hologram immediately changed to show her cards and to show that she was the current winner with a full house of kings with the pair of two as the kicker.

The Merc widened his eyes but then he saw me flip my cards over.

Four of a kind.
