Chapter 332: Doggo Was Lonely, So I Give Pats
Everyone was looking at me patting the doggy.
The border collie gave a whine and started panting, her tail wagging quite enthusiastically from the belly scratches I was giving to her.
“Does she have a name?” I asked.
“What?” The thief that tried to stop us muttered.
“Does she have a name?” I repeated, looking at him.
“She? Who? Sorry?”
I gestured at the doggo that I was currently patting, “I’m asking for her name.”
He blinked at me, clearly not having any idea what I was talking about.
“I… Don’t understand. Are you asking what kind of thing this is? It’s a dog.”
“Do you guys operate on not having names or something? Do you guys have names?”
“Yes?”
“Yeah, so what’s her name? Or you never gave her one?”
“Why… Why would we give a name to a dog?”
Damn… Is that the norm here? I don’t even know…
The dog had a collar on her so I assumed that they at least gave her a name but I guess to them, it’s like giving a name to your power armour or even your gun.
Sure, some people might do that but most people probably wouldn’t.
I guess… To people like them, dogs aren’t any different from weapons that they just need to feed from time to time which may or may not kill them if they don’t have the control collar on them.
I huffed, feeling a little dissatisfied at that which prompted me to slow down my patting and the dog noticed.
She whined a little and I returned my full attention to her and started rubbing her belly even faster.
The doggo let out another whine as her tongue rolled out of its maw to pant as I continued to rub her belly, her paws twitching slightly.
So cute~
Understandably, everyone else was just standing there watching me pat it until I stopped to look at the thieves, “Are you guys stopping for a break or what?”
That seemed to wake them up as they realised they had stopped moving and quickly went back to moving the boxes.
All except for the person who had tried to stop me as he continued to stare at me patting the doggo.
“Who… Who are you?” He asked.
I noticed that he was actually shaking a little which was either out of fear or disbelief, which I suspected was the latter.
I smiled at him, “I don’t think I need to tell you anything, right? Anyway sorry for playing with your dog without permission, she just felt a little lonely so I played with her a little.”
He was still giving me a dumbfounded look as I retreated from the dog, causing the border collie to let out a soft whine of disappointment as she rolled back onto her feet.
The doggo stood there and panted at me with a cute tilt of her head, as though waiting to see if I would resume patting her which I almost did because of how cute she looked.
“Woof?”

Nnghhh!! I can’t! If I continue I’m going to want to keep her! And I don’t want to be irresponsible and just take a dog with us because of an impulse… If I want to take a dog with us, I’ll have to make sure to get new furniture for the pet and also get dog food, dog toys, dog accessories, then maybe there’s also certification and licences that I need to sign plus making sure the dog is properly vaccinated and stuff.
There’s a lot of responsibilities when owning a pet dog, ok? And at this point, I’m not very sure that I’m in a position to take care of one just yet…
I nodded at the thief, signalling that he should take his dog back.
“Hey… Hey. Hey!” The thief called out to the dog.
The border collie ignored him and continued to watch me.
“Umm… Go back?” I told her.
The dog whined before turning back to walk towards the thief, stopping part way to give me another look to make sure I was sure about my order before moving the rest of the way back to the thief’s side.
The thief stared at the dog for a moment before finally recovering his senses and moving to join the rest of his comrades.
The border collie remained where she was for a moment before following the thief, making a low whine as she did so to show she really didn’t want to go.
Unnggh… Stop… You’re really going to make me cave in and ask to take you in at this rate…
Fortunately/Unfortunately, the thief that was supposed to be the dog’s handler took her outside of the cargo bay to arrange the boxes with him so she was out of my sight after that.
I did notice that things were a little awkward after that for some reason as the thieves refused to look in my direction as they moved the boxes of human organs.
They even look like they couldn’t wait for it to be done and over with as they sped up their movements to push the rest of the boxes out of the cargo bay.
Only when the last box was out did the guy who gave me the Credit Chip approach me again with his hand stretched out, “Nice doing business with you. No hard feelings, right?”
I shrugged and touched his hand, “I suppose bearing a grudge for that would be bad for business. I do have one question though.”
He raised an eyebrow as a silent indication for me to ask my question.
“Do you know anything about the sudden increase in demand for the organic food on this station? Especially the fact that some of the people who want them seemed to be addicted or going crazy for it for some reason?”
He scratched his head, “Ah… I did hear about that… We’ve had some customers who got a little violent with us just to try and get the organic ingredients we were selling, which is why we have to be so heavily armed while we’re moving around here…”
“Hmm… I see… Are all of your organic food stolen?”
He raised an eyebrow, “You have a problem with that?”
“It was just a question. I was wondering where you were sourcing them from.”
He relaxed slightly, “Most of them, yes. But if you’re hoping to learn about why through me, I can tell you I have no idea either and I’m not interested in learning why. We’re just here to take advantage of the market demand and that’s it.”
Well… Guess that was a dead end.
He then continued, “Listen… I suppose we did get off on the wrong foot but let’s start over, alright? I’m Naos, leader of the Dark Stalkers. We specialise in breaking into places and taking stuff that people don’t want to be taken and also selling stuff that people don’t want to be sold. So if you ever have a need for such services, don’t hesitate to contact me.”
He tapped on his personal terminal and I received a request to add him as a contact.
Seeing that it was better to have more contacts anyway, I accepted it.
“I’ll keep that in mind. I’m Tera, captain of the Teran Mercenary Company. I suppose if you need some Mercs or something you contact me as well, though right now we’re focusing on doing some black market trading at the moment.”
“Yes, I figured that. No wait… Are you that Tera? The one who helped the military take out that pirate lord back at Cietai system?”
I raised an eyebrow, “I’m surprised you know about that.”
“Of course I would, that was a pretty big deal you know?” He groaned before smacking himself in the head. “I suppose I should count myself lucky that you guys didn’t actually kill me back at that hotel huh… Ahem… Anyway, nice doing business with you but we do have other appointments to keep. I’m serious about the contact though, we’re up for hire in case you need something stolen or smuggled and you don’t want to get your hands dirty. I’ll even throw in a discount for your first request as a sign of goodwill.”
“That’s quite generous of you,” I pointed out.
“Hey, if I can’t even get the interest of a Gold ranked Merc like you, then I might as well just hang up my cloak and retire. Anyway, see ya.”
He gave me a casual salute before turning to join the rest of his group, leaving my ship entirely.
I watched the door close after him and Mara immediately came out from the shadows to storm towards me.
“Tera… You owe me an explanation right now,” She demanded.
I looked at her in surprise, “Eh? About what?”
“That was a dog– Wait… Ah… I forgot, you’re from another universe… I suppose that might be the reason… You were really not scared of the dog at all?”
“Are you?”
“If a dog manages to surprise me before I can react, I can be killed by them. So they are definitely a threat to me though I wouldn’t say I’m ‘scared’ of them. But for you to just let it approach you like that… I don’t think there’s anyone in existence who can do what you did.”
Amber then wrapped her arm around her shoulder, “Oh you have no idea Mara~ I have a nice story to tell you and some videos to share with you as well~ Why don’t we just step somewhere else where I can traumatise you?”
Without even waiting for her answer, Amber started to pull the doctor away, leaving me on my own.
Err… Ok… I guess we’ll take a break before going back to investigating the White Powder then…
