Chapter 341: The Real Cause Of This
Ok, I know that this place was pretty much lawless and stuff but I didn’t think it would be to this extent…
It seems like I was right about this problem being more pronounced since the gangs were too busy fighting each other to maintain order in their own territories.
Some of them even started forming their own groups to challenge the current gangs which was the case with the muscled woman that tried to hit on us earlier..
We witnessed at least a dozen different murders and more than two dozen robberies and thefts as we walked through this district.
But after a while, we would see the thugs in charge of that place beating up the troublemakers but most of the chaos was still left unchecked out here on the streets.
The ironic thing was that we were able to walk through the streets without anyone bothering us, surprisingly. That is if you don’t count the first time those girls approached us of course.
I pointed this out to the girls and Amber grinned at me, “That’s because you’re here, Tera~”
Right… Forget I asked then…
Mara sniffed, “If you want a better reason, it’s because there’s no profit for them to attack us, Captain.”
Ok, that makes more sense.
“Unless those people don’t care about profits of course,” Lea pointed out beside me.
Mara nodded, “That is true, but at least we have not encountered any such persons so far. And if they do appear, we would just simply retaliate.”
That’s true too.
We continued walking through the streets, ignoring the guy who was currently being beaten by a cybernetically enhanced woman who was screaming about him cheating on her.
Right behind them was another couple but they were engaged in lovemaking in the dark of the alley which I could only wonder why they would do it there.
I was wondering that because a few steps away from them was a corpse that had been left there for who knows how long but neither of them seemed bothered by it.
Man… This place really is something else…
I felt a soft tug on my shirt and I looked down to see Ries pinching the hem of my shirt nervously.
“Boss… Are we there yet?” She asked, her eyes darting us.
I guess she doesn’t like the fact that we were moving through what could be considered rather hostile territory.
I went ahead to pat her head to console her while looking at Mara.
She caught my gaze and gestured ahead of us, “Just around the corner. The problem is that there’s no guarantee that the person would be there though. They might be selling it somewhere else.”
“If they aren’t there, we’ll just ask around. Some of the shopkeepers there might have seen them and give us directions to where they might be.”
Mara nodded at my suggestion and we continued forward, keeping away from the fights that seemed to be quite rampant in this part of the station.
As we turned the corner, I instantly spotted who might be our target.
Tucked in between the shadows of two shops in the alley was a rather conspicuous cloaked person wearing a mask on their face. Behind them were several boxes that I assume was the White Powder they were trying to sell off as salt.
Incidentally, they had no customers at the moment which I believe was mostly due to the fact that they were advertising the White Powder as salt instead of what it actually was.
I’m sure if he was telling everyone that the boxes behind him were White Powder, they would be sold out within the hour.
Actually, now that I think about it… It might not be sold but robbed instead. So maybe that’s why this guy is advertising it as salt instead?
I guess we’re about to find out then.

Mara turned to give me a look as though waiting for my instruction so I nodded at her to show that we should proceed as planned.
I took over the lead and walked over to the masked guy who noticed me immediately when I got close.
He didn’t say anything and waited for me to speak instead.
“I heard you were selling salt?” I asked.
He straightened slightly and I could just imagine him smiling behind the mask, “You’re also one of them I see…”
He paused for a moment to look at the girls behind me.
It took me a moment to realise that he thought I was in the same position as that other guy who got forced to be a chef for one of the gangs. He must have also assumed that Amber and the others were my guards to make sure I didn’t run away or something.
I wasn’t going to correct him on that, at least not for now.
I crossed my arms, “So do you have salt or not?”
“Heh, yes I do. I’m selling a bag of ten for five hundred and twenty thousand Credits.”
What the flying–
Wait.
I thought salt was one of the cheaper ingredients since they mine it?
As though he knew what I was thinking, the masked guy quickly added, “This is exceptional quality salt that is brought here from an ocean colony planet in the inner colonies. Not mined from some desolate planet out here in the outer colonies. That’s why you’re paying a premium price for it.”
I did a quick mental calculation in my head and I realised that he’s selling each one at fifty two thousand Credits. That’s two thousand Credits above the average market value of White Powder per bag…
Damn, they’re really taking advantage of this huh?
Obviously, there was no way I was going to buy this but I kind of want to push things a little.
“Do you have any other type of salt?”
“I’m selling only one type of it.”
“Then… Could I just buy a few bags instead of an entire box?”
He turned his attention to the girls behind me, “What? You’re making her pay for the dru– The salt herself? You know that the food she makes won’t taste good without it right? You’re going to want to get this or else you wouldn’t be able to compete with the other establishments.”
Amber scoffed, “I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t need this to beat the others in this station at cooking. I’m even willing to bet money that she could challenge all the other chefs using this and win as well.”
I appreciate your confidence in me, Amber, but now isn’t the time for praising me or you’ll blow our cover.
The masked guy seemed to bristle at her words and he turned his sights on me, “Really now? So do you actually need this salt?”
“I am looking for salt and was told I could get it here.”
“Who told you this?”
I decided to take a risk, “The chef from the gambling den that belongs to the Silatro Syndicate.”
He nodded, “I see… Well, this is my price and I’m not changing it. So you either take it or leave it.”
“In that case… I can’t afford it. Is there any other way I can get this?”
“No. Only Credits. If you don’t have the Credits, then you’re out of luck.”
I pretended to be upset by looking down and clenching my jaw while I wrung my hands in front of me.
Lea supported me by moving behind me to place a hand on my shoulder, “Let’s go then. We’ve wasted enough time here.”
I then let her pull me away from the masked dude who snorted in amusement at my ‘predicament’.
When we were out of sight, Lea finally released me and I turned around to face them.
“So now what? We at least know the guy is there and judging by the price, that should be White Powder, right?”
Mara nodded at me, “There’s no need to assume. They are all boxes of White Powder.”
Thank you for the confirmation, Mara.
Amber tilted her head at me, “Do we need anything else? We could just turn this in at the Guild and be done with it, right? I even recorded the conversation earlier so that would serve as proof.”
“Oh, I didn’t actually think of that. Thanks, Amber.”
“Ehehehe~ Anything for you, Tera~”
Ries held up a hand, “Maybe we can still find out where this guy gets his… Erm… His salt? Somebody must be supplying him right?”
Mara spoke up, “I have the answer to that as well. It’s the Rattlers.”
I blinked at the revelation, “Wait… What?”
She nodded, “I don’t know why but from the memories I’ve gleaned from him, he’s part of the Rattlers and he was instructed by the gang to do this. The reason they are doing it, however, is not revealed to him so I do not know either.”
Amber gasped, “Wait… Don’t tell me they’re selling the drugs we sold them?”
Oh my gods… They are, aren’t they? They know if they were selling the drugs by themselves, the other gangs would be upset about it… So they’re taking advantage of this organic food boom by selling it as ‘salt’ instead.
Well fuck… That means we’re indirectly responsible for this happening…
