Chapter 342: At Least We’re Getting Paid To Deal With It
Damn… So we actually kind of caused this to happen indirectly… Funny how things work, huh?
Amber seemed to have read my mind because she suddenly came up to me and hugged me from behind.
“No, no. You really think that this is all caused by us? We aren’t responsible for what they do with the things we’ve sold to them. Under normal circumstances, they should have sold it as it is. But their greed is what made them change the label to sell them as something else to exploit others.”
I chuckled, “Don’t worry, Amber. I’m not having a morality crisis right now. I’m just finding it ironic that we were basically the source of this problem and now we’re the ones trying to find out what caused it.”
“Now that you mention it… There is some irony in that, isn’t there? Ehehehe~”
Lea turned to me, “So what do we do now?”
Amber shrugged, “I was thinking we could just hand over whatever we have to the Guild already. Pretty sure this would be enough to get us quite an amount of Credits even if we didn’t resolve it.”
“Do we leave out the part that we know which gang is responsible though?” I asked, feeling a little concerned. “They might go investigate them and it might end up linking back to us.”
“Even if they did find that we were the ones who sold it, it wouldn’t matter because it’s not illegal here to sell it. So they can’t go after us for that,” Amber explained.
Oh right. It’s a free trade zone here so we didn’t do anything wrong.
I nodded, “In that case… We could even present ourselves as witnesses, can’t we?”
“We could… If you want to… But that would draw attention to us though… And that gang might come after us…”
Right, I guess that would be undesirable… I still want to make use of their black market after all.
“In that case, we’ll just present the evidence we have and then give our ‘suspicions’ on who is involved,” I decided.
Mara nodded, “We could do that. Shall we go back to the Guild then?”
Everyone was in agreement so we started the journey back to the Guild building.
On the way back, I found that the chaos had surprisingly died down and there were even Cleaners around getting rid of the corpses.
I guess one of the gangs must have sent some people out to enforce some order in their territory.
The fact that there were some mean looking people carrying weapons standing around watching the Cleaners strongly suggested that it might be the case.
Still… I managed to loot some of the newer corpses that we didn’t loot on our first pass.
Ries bundled up all the weapons we looted and carried them on her back, making her look like those porter characters you might find in fantasy stories.
She looked so cute so I couldn’t help myself but give her a few heatpats for it which made her start purring.
So cute~
We reached the Guild without any other incident and the place was still as empty as before with only one or two people in the dining area.
Tyle was still at the bar and he looked even more bored than before. He wasn’t even cleaning any glasses and was just tapping away on his personal terminal at the corner of the bar.
He didn’t even realise that we were standing in front of him until I tapped on the table.
He actually jerked in surprise when he heard the sound and he looked up in surprise before realising it was us.
“Oh… Hey there. Didn’t think you girls would be back so soon. So I guess you girls found nothing in the end?”
I raised an eyebrow at him, “Why do you assume that we found nothing?”
“Huh? You’ve been only gone for like… A day? You’re not going to tell me that you’ve actually managed to solve this in that short period of time, are you?”

I said nothing and simply stared at him.
His eyes widened, “Wait, seriously? Do you know how long this has been going on? There were so many other groups that tried to deal with this but none of them actually found anything concrete!”
Amber came over to lean on the counter, “So? Just because other incompetent idiots needed that long to figure out something doesn’t mean it would be the same with us.”
He grimaced, “Right… I mean… I just wasn’t expecting you girls to find something so quickly… I was thinking maybe it would take a few days or so before you girls came back with something… Wait… Or maybe you girls just found some new clues and not really solved the case?”
“No, we know why this is happening and also who is causing it as well as a potential mastermind behind this case,” I informed him as a matter of factly.
He blinked for a good few seconds before sucking in a breath and breathing out, “Ok… Let me just make sure that I am not getting this wrong… Do you really know who is behind this and you have the proof to back this up as well?”
Amber tapped her personal terminal, “Got it all recorded down right here.”
“Alright… In that case, if I were to schedule a meeting with the Station Master, you could present the evidence to them and point out the culprit behind this convincingly enough?”
Everyone turned to look at me.
I raised an eyebrow, “I’m pretty sure we can. Right girls?”
“What about solving the problem?”
I paused for a moment, “Regarding that… It might not be easy for us to deal with since it involves one of the major gangs in this station.”
Tyle straightened himself before beckoning for us to follow him as he walked out from behind the bar, “This way then…”
He brought us to the back of the dining hall where a rather inconspicuous door stood flushed against the back wall.
He went over to tap on the side of the wall to reveal a hidden console which he then used his personal terminal to scan it to open up the door.
Walking through the doorway revealed that the room was an office of sorts which I assumed belonged to Tyle as the person in charge of this Guild branch.
He sat behind the desk and a holographic screen projected out from the table which he started tapping on to manipulate the virtual menu on it.
Soon enough, it showed that he was trying to call someone.
The call connected after two rings and a shadowed figure was on the other side of the call.
“What is this about now? If this is you complaining about your lack of customers, I don’t give–”
“This is about the request you gave us,” Tyle interrupted, prompting the person on the other end to shut their mouth immediately.
“Go on then.”
“I will let the Mercs who investigated this speak on this matter.”
He waved his hand and the screen moved from in front of him to be projected on the wall to our right.
The figure seemed to turn to regard us with a nod, “So you’re the ones who investigated this? I’m assuming you have something substantial if I am being contacted directly by the Guild?”
I nodded, “We do. We know that there’s several gangs involved in this but most of them might not even realise that they were complicit in this matter. They have been trying to take advantage of the organic food boom to kidnap people who might know how to cook in order to serve organic dishes.”
“How is this related to people going crazy?”
“The people the gangs kidnapped aren’t good enough to serve dishes that satisfy the demands, so someone started introducing them to buy salt from them in order to make their food taste better. But the truth is that the ‘salt’ they were selling to these chefs was not actually salt.”
The figure seemed to tense up, “And what are they actually?”
“White Powder.”
“Do you have proof of this?
I turned to Amber and she tapped on her personal terminal to project a screen in front of her, showing our interaction with the chef at the Silatro Syndicate’s gambling den.
I didn’t even know she had this recorded but I’m definitely grateful that she did it since I most definitely did not think about recording it.
After playing that conversation, she also went ahead to play the meeting we had with the ‘salt’ merchant to him as well.
The entire time, the Station Master was just watching the recording silently and even Tyle was completely engrossed in the video that Amber played, the man looking more and more glum as the video played out.
Finally, when the video ended, the Station Master sucked in a breath before slamming the table with a fist.
“Fuuuuuuuuuucccckk!!”
Well… That’s very eloquently put sir. But there’s only one thing I’m interested in knowing…
So how much are you going to pay us?
