Chapter 343: How To Beat Drugged Food?
The Station Master actually went on a big rant about how it was one thing to sell the drugs openly and another to sell it under the guise of something else.
He seemed so pissed that I was glad that we didn’t tell him we were the original suppliers of the White Powder in the first place.
We had to wait for a good five minutes before he finally finished ranting to look back at us.
“I assume you know who is behind this?”
I hesitated for a moment, “We have our suspicions…”
“Tell me.”
“We believe it’s a gang called the Rattlers.”
The Station Master went silent for a good few seconds before he inhaled and exhaled deeply.
“If it was any other gang doing this… Fuck… Is there anyway to get people off this ‘salt’ cooking without directly stopping them?”
Wait, really? I was expecting him to deal with the gang directly. Like maybe contacting them to tell them to stop or maybe even going the more violent route by getting some Mercs or guards to root them out.
I’m guessing the Rattlers have something to hold against the Station Master so he’s not able to move against them directly.
I shrugged, “Sorry but… We’re not big enough to go against them ourselves. So we won’t be able to deal with this indirectly either.”
Tyle raised a hand, “Wait… I think… I think I might have an idea…”
All of us turned to him to see what he had to say.
He raised a finger, “I believe that this happened because people were desperate to get good tasting food after they happened to taste it one time. So in order to get them out of it, we just need to get them food that tastes better than the food laced with the drugs!”
The Station Master seemed to stare at Tyle for a moment, as though they needed some time to process what the guy had just said.
“First of all… Is that even possible? Second of, where do you suppose you could go to find someone who is able to prepare something like that?”
Almost immediately, everyone else turned to look at me.
I blinked and looked around the room, “Wait… Really? You guys aren’t really suggesting I cook for this, right? You don’t think I can really compete with those drugs, do you?”
Amber grinned, “I wholeheartedly believe that your cooking would be better than those crap that were only made to taste ‘good’ because of the drug, Tera! I’m pretty sure if those people that got addicted to the White Powder through the food were to taste your cooking, they wouldn’t even want to go back to eating those lousy drugged food anymore!”
I really don’t think that would be the case though… Like you’re telling me that these people can get rid of their drug addiction just by eating my food? That sounds ridiculous even to me.
Unexpectedly, Tyle stood up and gave me a serious look, “I think it’s worth a shot though! As someone who has personally tasted your cooking, I think even if it might not completely solve the problem, it could definitely make an impact on this problem!”
The Station Master scoffed, “You’re not just doing this in an attempt to get people back into your bar, are you?”
Tyle chuckled, “I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t hoping this might bring back some people into this place, but I do believe that this could actually solve this problem without directly going against the gangs themselves!”
The Station Master spoke up, “Are you really sure of this? You do realise how ridiculous this sounds right now, do you? You’re saying that this Merc’s cooking is able to completely turn this situation around?”
Tyle turned to the screen with a serious look on his face, “You have not tasted her cooking. Even if the chances of it happening is not a hundred percent, it is not zero. And unless you have a better plan to deal with this, I say this is our best chance of dealing with this without risking the entire station descending into more chaos. Do I need to remind you that the gang war in the station is on an escalating trend right now?”
“Tch… Fine. You know what? I doubt it could be worse than what is happening right now. Keep the request up but go ahead with your plan and we’ll see how it goes.”
“In that case… We need some resources so…”
A sigh came from the Station Master, “Fine… I’ll provide the funds to buy the ingredients for one batch. Show me the results of it and I will think about providing funds for further batches. Got it?”
“Don’t worry, we will send you the results of it soon enough.”

“For your sake, I hope so.”
The Station Master did not wait for a response and ended the call.
I narrowed my eyes at Tyle, “Did you really just decide that for me? Did it not occur to you that I might just reject this plan of yours?”
The look on his face after he heard that told me that he did not actually think that I would say no to this plan.
“Ah… Umm… Come on, you would be saving the lives of so many people! If your cooking can get them out of that addiction, there will be so many grateful people!”
I crossed my arms, “If I was that kind of a person, I wouldn’t have signed up as a Merc but as a missionary instead.”
“Umm… Right… Err… I guess you would want to be paid for this… Err… I can’t exactly offer much because this would be a personal request and not from the Guild… Maybe the Station Master might be able to pay you more Credits but the only thing I can promise is that you don’t need to pay for the ingredients that you would be cooking with.”
I raised a finger, “I don’t need you to pay me in Credits. If you can get me organic food ingredients and perhaps even seeds or saplings that I can take to grow them as payment, I would be happy with that.”
His gaze went towards Lea and I knew that he knew what I intended to do with the seeds and saplings. Not that you needed to be a genius or even know that I have an Alv on my crew to figure that out anyway.
“I’m not too sure about the seeds and saplings… Perhaps our dear Station Master might be inclined to put in an order for that after we succeed but I can at least guarantee the ingredients. Would you be using organic ingredients for this task or just synthfood?”
I thought about it for a moment, “I might need to do some testing… I could try both I suppose… Perhaps you could get some of the people who were affected to try out both my creations and see what kind of effect they have on them. Just saying though, I really don’t think this would help their addiction at all… I don’t think my food can replace the drug’s effects on them…”
“We’ll worry about it when that time comes, it’s not like we have a better idea short of going to war with the gangs ourselves at the moment and I’d rather not do that if I can help it. Heck, I think we would lose if it came down to that and this station would turn into a pirate base instead…”
Right… The fact that mobilising the station’s security and even the Mercenaries on this station to fight against the gangs might result in a loss told me just who were the ones that were really in charge around here… Not that it wasn’t obvious from the start anyway…
That Station Master might just be in their pockets for the money and not because they have blackmail material on him in the first place.
Everyone here is just looking out for themselves, clearly.
That’s why I didn’t feel bad for making demands of my own since they were very clearly trying to make use of me as well.
Sure, I might have kind of instigated this problem for them but they didn’t need to know that.
Tyle picked up his personal terminal and started tapping away, presumably to send a message to the Station Master to list my demands.
“First things first though… How soon can you start? Do you need more equipment or any specific ingredients that you require to do this?”
I shook my head, “Just get me anything you can and I can start right now if you want. I do want to know how impossible this task is before I go any further.”
He paused and looked up at me, “Right now? You sure? In that case… You can use whatever you find in the kitchens. I’ll foot the bill for the first batch so don’t hold back.”
Well… If you’re going to put it that way, don’t mind if I do~
