Chapter 357: Time To Go Loud
I went over to the dead guy and grabbed the energy rifle that he had dropped and rummaged through his vest to pick up the spare energy cells for the gun as well.
Since I was going in loud, I needed as much firepower as I could possibly get.
Strapping the energy rifle to my back, I started to run down the stairs right as shouts came from around the corner.
Damn… I was actually hoping he might be bluffing but he was really serious about raising the alarm…
I brought up my ballistic rifle to watch the corner as I continued my descent.
The sound of footsteps coming up the stairs caused me to pause and focus my aim on the corner, waiting for the person to appear.
I did not have to wait long before someone sprinted around the corner with his rifle held close to his body. He didn’t even bother to slow down to check the corner, completely not expecting me to be there.
He only had a moment to realise his mistake before I fired a round that pierced through his head.
Two more guys turned around the corner, also caught completely off guard from my presence as they skidded to a stop when they heard the gunshot.
I only needed to shift my gun to the right by a few centimetres before firing a burst of four rounds, all four bullets finding their mark and piercing through the bodies of the two thugs.
Both of them let out a wail of pain, crashing against each other before falling face first onto the ground.
I held my position for a while more, waiting to see if there would be more people coming from around the corner.
When no one else came and everything was silent, I started descending the steps again.
I was planning to peek around the corner to make sure there was no one else over there. But just as I reached the last step of the stairs, a hand suddenly reached out from the corner and grabbed the barrel of my gun before pulling it.
Instead of trying to yank it back, however, I let go of it and immediately reached for the pistol on my waist to draw it.
The thug that had been hiding behind the corner was surprised to feel no resistance to his pull and ended up stepping out of the corner to steady himself, only for his eyes to widen when he saw my pistol was now pointed at him.
I pulled the trigger twice, blasting two bullets into his chest before pulling it one more time to fire another round through his head.
Before the body could hit the floor, I was already stepping towards the corner to peek around it, my finger tense on the pistol’s trigger as I expected more people to be there.
Surprisingly, there was no one else and I relaxed my grip on the pistol, allowing myself to inspect the aftermath of the short skirmish.
I found the gun that was wrenched out of my grasp easily enough and re-equipped myself with it.
I didn’t want to spend too much time here so I only quickly glanced through what other equipment these guys had and found a pair of grenades on one of them so I took those along as well as two more spare magazines for my rifle.
Descending the stairs quickly, I kept my ear out to listen for any potential enemies and it didn’t take long before the sound of a door creaking open got my attention.
The sound had come right as I reached where I presumed to be the eighteenth floor and I immediately turned to the door that was on the same floor as I was.
There a thug was just in the midst of raising up his gun as he spotted me but I was just a second faster since my gun was already raised.
Three gunshots rang out and two of my bullets ricocheted off the doorframe while the third bullet hit him in the shoulder, throwing his aim off.
I quickly corrected my aim and fired two more shots, this time nailing him in the chest and dropping him.
The sound of shouting and hurried footsteps came from the stairs below me and it sounded like a dozen or more people were storming up the stairs.
I quickly pressed myself against the corner and dropped to a knee while lining up my rifle with the landing half a flight of steps below.
I was hoping that they would charge up the stairs again but this time they were a little smarter as the one leading them stopped and peeked around the corner first to check if the coast was clear.
That would have saved him had I not already been aiming at that corner so a quick squeeze of my finger ended up sending a bullet flying straight through his head.

The sound of his head being blown open and his blood splattering against the back wall was oddly satisfying.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to celebrate as three thugs immediately gave up their cover to come charging up the stairs, probably figuring that they could overpower me with numbers.
I held down the trigger and unleashed a blast of automatic fire down the stairwell, emptying the rest of my mag at the charging thugs.
One of them instantly died from a bullet piercing through his skull while another one was shot in his leg and fell forward to smash his face against the stairs, knocking himself out but still alive.
The third guy managed to avoid my shots entirely and tried to fire a few shots at me with his pistol, forcing me to do a backwards roll to avoid getting shot.
At the same time, I pressed the magazine release button on the rifle and let the empty magazin drop onto the floor.
Since it wasn’t my gun, I didn’t need to worry about retrieving the dropped magazine so I left it where it was and slammed in a new mag before cocking the gun.
The thug’s head appeared over the top step of the staircase at that moment and I fired a three round burst at him.
The sight of his head being flung back and blood splattering against the ceiling told me that I managed to land my shot.
A few more shouts came from the staircase and more footsteps could be heard thundering up the steps.
Seeing that I had given up my cover and there was no way for me to reclaim the top of the stairs without getting shot, my gaze went towards the open doorway instead.
I had to make a running leap over the dead body that was still halfway out the doorway, narrowly avoiding several shots that were fired at me by the thugs from the staircase.
I raised my rifle to check the perimeter to make sure there weren’t any thugs hiding in the room.
Seeing that the area was clear, I turned back to pull out one of the grenades.
A few bullets peppered the doorway and I activated the grenade, letting it cook for two seconds before I tossed it out through the door, aiming it such that it would bounce off the doorframe to fly towards the staircase.
“Grenade!!” Someone shouted, right before an explosion wrecked through the building.
I waited for a second before peeking out, finding a few of the thugs groaning on the ground in pain but still alive.
I moved along the wall towards the staircase, peeking around the corner to check if there were any remaining thugs that were hiding below.
I spotted two guys lying down prone on the stairs, presumably having chosen to hit the deck to avoid the shrapnel from the grenade I threw earlier.
Unfortunately for them, they were completely not prepared for me as I just went ahead to double tap them in the head before turning my attention to the rest of the thugs around the floor.
One of them tried to run at me with a knife and I briefly wondered why he didn’t shoot at me until I found his broken gun laying at the side, destroyed from the explosion.
He didn’t even slow down when I lifted my gun so I fired a shot aimed at his head… Only for a shield to materialise and block my shot.
Fuck.
He swung his knife in an overhead slash and I side stepped it, getting past his guard before shoving my gun barrel right into his chest.
His eyes widened and he turned to me before I pulled the trigger, firing a burst of three rounds into his chest before kicking him away.
Not giving the rest another chance to recover, I emptied the rest of my mag on the others that were still on the ground, making sure that everyone was dead before swapping in a new mag.
Alright. Now I can take the personal shield and the knife from that guy while picking up some extra ammo too.
Now I wonder where they are storing my stuff?
