Chapter 360: There’s Another Fight Downstairs
I went back to using the stairs and this time I simply strolled down the steps with my light machine gun pointed at the corner as I descended.
When the guy said his boss has my stuff downstairs, I thought it was just one floor down so I was a little bit wary when I descended to the next floor.
But when I found the floor empty, I realised that he most likely meant on the ground floor.
Guess I’ll have to make my way all the way down then.
As I reached the tenth floor, I suddenly felt the building shake quite violently.
I paused, planting my feet firmly on the ground, waiting to see if anything else happened.
I then heard a shout coming from somewhere below which was followed by a stampede of footsteps on the stairs.
My light machine gun was pointed at the stairs since I thought those footsteps meant they were charging up here.
I also positioned myself to be able to see the stairs that were going up and also the door leading to the lift lobby in case they tried to ambush me again.
But that was when I realised the sounds were getting softer and softer which meant that they were running away from my floor instead of running towards me.
Huh… Odd.
Maybe they are gathering themselves for a final stand or something?
In that case, I shouldn’t be letting them fortify their positions and attack them before they can properly prepare themselves.
I started running down the stairs again, still keeping an eye out for ambushes just in case but they prepared no such thing for me.
When I reached the sixth floor though, I found the staircase was blocked off by a metal graille and a steel plated door which prevented me from moving to the fifth floor from here.
I frowned at the metal door before moving in the direction of the lift lobby, thinking that I could possibly use the lift to bypass the door.
When I got to the lift lobby however, I saw that the display for the lift I had used earlier was now showing that it was out of order.
I’m guessing they must have flipped some kind of switch to deactivate it?
Fine then… Hard way it is…
I went back to the metal door and looked around it to see if there was some weak part of it that I could exploit.
I then very quickly realised that the hinges for the metal door were on this side of the wall which simplified things.
Moving a short distance away, I took out the energy rifle and aimed at the top hinge before firing an energy round at it.
The high heat from the beam blasted the hinge apart.
Good, I was a little worried that the hinges might be made of some kind of special metal that this energy rifle wouldn’t be able to melt.
I then went ahead to shoot off the rest of the hinges and the metal door crashed onto the ground with a loud thud, opening the way for me.
I placed the energy rifle back on the backpack before picking up my light machine gun again to start descending towards the fifth floor.
With a loud crash like that, surely they would know I’m coming right?
As I turned around the corner with my gun up in preparation to fire, I realised that the fifth floor had a different layout than the apartments above.
It looked like this floor was meant to be some kind office or something with the work desks and what seemed to be cubicle dividers scattered around the room. But the thugs had thrashed this place and obviously threw parties here since there were bottles of alcohol and synthfood packets scattered throughout the floor.
The entire floor was empty save for one person that was hunched over one of the desks, seemingly working on something.

I almost wanted to blow his head off until I realised that the thing he was working on was my Codex.
Huh, this might be the boss that the other guy was talking about. That means he might know where the rest of my stuff is.
But… Where’s the other thugs? Why is this place empty? Is this another trap?
I entered the room cautiously, sweeping my gaze around the room to see if there were any thugs hiding in the shadows.
I even looked around the stairs to see if there were any traps in place like trip mines, trip wires, pressure plates or even some hidden door that will slam shut after I stepped into the room.
Seeing none of that sort, this is either not a trap or they hid it so well that I can’t find any.
I hefted my minigun and pointed the muzzle at the guy that was still hunched over my Codex, preparing myself to fire at him as soon as anything pops out.
Surprisingly, nothing happened and I managed to reach the guy unmolested.
I then realised that he was muttering something under his breath and I got a little closer to try and hear what he was saying.
“Fucking weird stupid thing… Why the fuck doesn’t any of our stuff work?! What the fuck is this?!”
Oh, he’s trying to hack into my Codex.
I peered over his shoulder and it looked like he was trying to connect to my Codex using his personal terminal.
His entire screen was filled with lines of code which looked alien to me so I had no idea what he was doing.
I wasn’t going to wait around until he succeeded of course, so I lifted up my machine gun and pressed the barrel to the back of his head, causing him to freeze up.
“Hey. What you doing over there?” I asked sarcastically.
He slowly raised his hands, “Wait… Wait… I’m not the boss! I… I was just tasked to do this! Please! If you want Credits, we don’t have any here! The best we got is the armoury on the fifteenth floor!”
I ignored his pleas and asked, “Where’s the rest of my stuff?”
“Your… Your stuff? What… I don’t understand?”
“The personal terminal you are hacking. That’s mine. Where’s the rest of the stuff?”
“Eh? Wait… This is yours? But… This belong to the chef we kidnapped?”
I pressed my gun against his head harder, “Who else did you think I was? In fact, where’s everyone else?”
“Wait! Wait! Wait! Aren’t you with the people downstairs?”
“What do you mean the people downstairs?”
“We’re… We’re being attacked right now! Aren’t you with those people?!”
“Who is attacking you?”
“I… I don’t know? Are you saying you’re not one of them?”
“I’m the chef you guys kidnapped you idiot! Is this another gang attack?!”
“I really don’t know! They just made me stay here to try and crack into this personal terminal! All I know is that there was a sudden attack at the front and all I know is that they bust down our defenses like it was nothing!”
“Why?”
“They… They thought it contained instructions on how to make your food!”
Huh… Well… It actually does, to be honest. I do record my recipes in my Codex so they’re not wrong.
But now I have a problem since they’re being attacked by some other gang right now which makes things more complicated…
“Is there another way out of here?”
“I… I don’t know! Look… I’m just a mook, ok?! Everyone all went out and left me here! I don’t know anything!”
“Fine, where’s my stuff then?”
“That… I think… I think they’re over there?” He answered, pointing at a corner of the room.
I turned to look in the direction he was pointing at and sure enough, I saw my shotgun and the rest of my stuff lying on top of a–
I felt something hit against my cheek, sending me stumbling back.
The thug in front of me reached for his waist, pulling out a pistol which he tried to point towards me.
I went ahead to pull the trigger which was still pointed in the direction of his head.
His head ended up getting blown to pieces before he could even level the pistol at me, his corpse dropping onto the ground like a sack of potatoes.
I frowned when I realised that ended up blowing some of his blood onto my Codex.
Asshole can’t even die without giving me problems… Also, that punch hurt… I can’t believe I actually fell for that trick.
Then again, he was telling the truth about my stuff being here so whatever…
I went ahead to grab my Codex and used his shirt to wipe it clean before moving to collect the rest of my stuff.
Seems like they really just dumped everything they took off me over here so even my pistol, knife and ammo were also left here.
Well that’s convenient~ Now I’m properly equipped again~
Time to get out of here before I run into the other gang…
Oh wait, I guess I should give the girls a call first.
