Chapter 373: This One’s A Sneaky Boss
We checked the other doorways in the hallway and it seemed like it led to different rooms that housed the machinery meant to be manufacturing whatever this factory was meant to be making.
I couldn’t tell what exactly they were making here and neither did the girls but from how run down the machines looked, I don’t think the thugs were making use of them either.
Since that was the case, we ignored them and moved in the direction of where the thugs had been trying to run earlier, believing it should lead us to the rest of this gang.
At this point, I believe we should be close to the final rooms of this place so we did another check of our equipment before reaching the door at the end of the hall.
I took a look at the girls and they nodded at me in response, showing that they were ready.
The last door was a normal sized one so I wasn’t expecting there to be another fortified position like earlier.
That doesn’t mean I wasn’t expecting any enemies though, especially since we have yet to see the boss.
Wait… The boss can’t be the one piloting the mech right? Because if it was, I would be so disappointed…
The door was also locked so I went ahead to connect my Codex to it and hacked it open.
The lock on the door clicked open and I hefted my shotgun again, taking point beside the door.
I nodded at Amber who was standing on the other side of the doorframe, prompting her to open the door
The moment the door slid open, I popped out from my cover and aimed my shotgun into the room.
Ah, this looks like the office or some kind of administration part of the factory since there were cubicles and office tables scattered around the room.
Most of them were broken or smashed and bottles of alcohol and synthfood packets were strewn all around the floor as well.
Aside from that… The whole place was empty.
I even scanned the room a few times to make sure of it and the girls seemed to think so too since they looked just as confused as I was.
There was another door at the very back which I assume led to the manager’s office or something so we started moving towards it.
We spread out to cover the path towards the last room, making sure there weren’t any thugs hiding behind the desks waiting to ambush us.
Right as we sweeped past the halfway point, I suddenly felt something pull me back.
I thought it was an enemy attacking me and swung around to point my shotgun in that direction, only to see it was Mara pulling me back.
Before I could ask her what was wrong, something flew through the space I had been occupying just a moment ago, crashing into the cubicle nearby in a deafening crash.
When I turned back to look at what made the noise, I found a chair rolling on the ground that was thrown from somewhere that had made the noise.
Where did that come from?
“There’s someone else in here,” Mara announced.
Everyone else was instantly on alert and scanned around the room once again.
I also did the same but the place was most definitely empty and there wasn’t even a shadow of another person aside from us in this room.
“They’re invisible,” Mara added.
All of us immediately tensed up as this had just turned into an even bigger threat.
“How did you know?” I whispered.
“I heard his thoughts but saw no one around,” She explained easily, still maintaining a whisper.

“Can you tell where he is?”
She shook her head, “I can only hear his thoughts but not the direction of where they come from… And they are staying incredibly still that I can’t… Wait… Yes, I have an idea but you’ll have to trust me.”
“I already trust you, Mara.”
She suddenly spun me around to face her to show me a smile before she shoved me forward, causing me to stumble back and trip over my feet to fall onto the ground.
Ah… Well… Since she already warned me ahead of time, I didn’t fight back and simply let myself fall.
Right then, I noticed out of the corner of my eye, another chair had been lifted up into the air almost as if it was being lifted up telepathically. But I instantly knew that this was the invisible enemy we were dealing with.
Mara reacted immediately by shoving her hand in that direction, causing the objects that had been in that area to be blown backwards.
There was a rough cry of pain as whoever that was there got shoved back to crash into a wall nearby.
Amber and Ries immediately started shooting in that spot as well, only for a translucent shield to appear to block their shots.
That seemed to surprise them for some reason as both Ries and Amber actually paused their shooting to look at the shield.
That gave whoever was there enough time to recover and escape since the very next moment they started shooting again, the shield was no longer there.
“Mara?!” Amber shouted, her dual pistols still raised.
“I have him,” Our Psionic responded, flinging a table in an empty spot of the room.
Another cry of pain came from there and Amber started firing again, causing the shield to appear once more.
The invisible guy managed to shove off the table and ignored all the bullets coming at him to escape into the last room, shutting the door behind him.
Ries took out a grenade and looked at me, “Shall I blow him up, Boss?”
“Wait, wait… We want to keep the loot intact, remember?” I reminded her.
“Oh right! Nyahahaha~ I can’t wait to collect all the guns they have!” She laughed, storing the grenade back where she had gotten it from.
“So err… What was that?” I asked Amber.
“What was what?”
“You hesitated when you saw the shield.”
“Ah… Most cloaking devices don’t have a shield that is strong enough to withstand an assault like that. At least… Those that are in the conventional market.”
I blinked, “Are you saying that this might be another piece of military hardware or something?”
Ries raised her hand, “It is very likely, Boss! Or it might even be specially modified so it’s a rare piece of tech!”
I couldn’t help but let a smile materialise on my face, “That means… That’s the boss isn’t it? And that could very well be our prize for subduing him.”
“That’s right!”
“Alright then. What are we waiting for?” I asked, lifting my shotgun up to imitate a racking motion with it like in the movies.
I went directly towards the door and kicked it open before firing a few blind shots inside the room.
The moment I saw the translucent shield pop up, I immediately switched to the shield buster round and fired two more times, the buckshot peppering the shield without any effect first before the next round completely shattered the shield.
When the shield broke, the cloaking function seemed to have deactivated as well, revealing a rather skinny guy with long hair tied up in a ponytail crouching behind one of the desks.
He pulled out something from below and I saw it was tube shaped which made me leap backwards and shove Lea who was behind me away from the door.
There was a loud whoosh sound as the rocket launcher was fired at us and I panicked when I saw it head towards Amber.
But the rocket suddenly diverted its course and it flew towards the wall on the other side instead, exploding against it.
The shockwave of the blast still sent most of us flying back however but it didn’t look like anyone was seriously hurt.
Mara must have redirected the rocket at the last moment away from Amber and sent it flying to where it had.
I let out a frustrated growl as this bastard almost killed all of us and stormed inside the room with my shotgun stashed on my back.
The blast from the rocket had also reached the room so the skinny guy had also been thrown on the floor, the bastard coughing from the smoke and dust as he tried to push himself up.
He looked up just in time for me to punch him across the face to send him falling back down onto the ground, right before I delivered a kick into his abdomen which made him curl up into a ball.
I went ahead to beat him up for a while until I delivered a particularly nasty kick to his face which ended up knocking him and a few of his teeth out before I stopped.
That’s what you get, you bastard.
I then turned back to see all the girls staring at me.
“That’s so hot… Can you do it again, Tera?” Amber moaned.
Ahem… Please forget you girls saw anything…
