Chapter 377: Prepping For The Station Raid
We ended up getting eight more solo Mercs to join our group which brought our numbers up to sixty exactly.
The eight solo Mercs had no ships of their own so they would be joining the assault on my ship instead.
Incidentally, either by coincidence or design, all eight of them were male Mercs and they look like they had been cybernetically modded to the teeth.
Heck, one of them even looked like he had a shoulder mounted rocket launcher while another looked like he had given himself two more robotic arms that sprouted from his shoulder.
These guys look more like mechs than actual people if you asked me…
Yet, they were extremely polite when I talked to them. The dichotomy between how they looked and what they were saying was really big.
Can you believe they referred to me as “My Lady”? And they were even saying it seriously too and not in a mocking kind of way.
I left them alongside the other Mercs from the other teams that would be boarding with us in my ship’s cargo bay.
The flight there will only take about two hours at most so we don’t need to prepare rooms for them to stay in.
“You have the coordinates, Mara?” I asked, looking over my shoulder from the Captain’s seat
She tapped on the map console, “Inputting them now, Captain.”
The console in front of me let out a notification beep to show me the map had been updated.
“Forward them to the others and get ready to fire up the Travel Drives,” I ordered.
Amber gave me a thumbs up, “Already done, Tera!”
Like I said, it’s nice to have competent companions.
I checked that our course was lined up with the coordinates that Mara had given me before double checking that all the Merc ships were properly docked with each other with my ship being in the centre.
We could, of course, just initiate our own Travel Drives to get there but we would be travelling at different speeds and we might end up getting separated.
That’s why I made the decision to have everyone dock with each other into a line before we flung ourselves towards the mining station.
We would then stop a few minutes before reaching there and separate ourselves before continuing there on our own.
At that distance, it shouldn’t matter even if our speeds are different since we would reach at around the same time anyway, which was better than reaching there with a few minutes difference if we were to head there on our own from here.
Confirming that all the captains of the ships docked with us were broadcasting an all clear signal, I started up the Travel Drives to sync up with the other ships’.
Our engines shut off for a moment and our Inertia Drives slowed us down by quite a bit before our Travel Drives fired up simultaneously, catapulting us away to the darkness of space.
On the screen that showed the back of my ship through the external cameras, I could see Denibi station rapidly shrinking away into the distance.
I relaxed into my seat, a habit I had from playing the game as the period of time between leaving a station and your Travel Drives starting up is the ripest time for someone to ambush you.
I already expected this gang to know they are being targeted so they might have even laid a trap or ambush for us outside the station.
But perhaps they did not think we were going to attack their mining station or they have not gotten wind that we have uncovered their hideouts, they did not set up such a trap.
Either that or they decided to focus their defenses at the base itself instead.
Hmm… Ok, this isn’t the time for relaxing.
I tapped on the screen to the side and initiated a call with the other captains travelling with us.
My call was answered almost immediately and six screens appeared in front of me, each one showing a different captain.

“We’re going to need to do some planning for the battle ahead. Does anyone here have station raid experience?”
All of them answered in the affirmative.
Great, that means all of them have at least participated in at least one battle where they had to attack a fortified enemy base.
“Alright, at this point, I’m going to assume that this gang already suspects that they are being targeted and might fortify their hideouts so we need to prepare for a possible defensive force that is outside of our expectations. Does anyone have any ideas?”
There was a slight pause and the captains seemed like they were waiting for each other to speak.
One of them, a particularly muscular guy with a cybernetic eyepiece attached to his left eye raised his hand.
“In case they have a ship that’s above C Class, I do have Ion torpedoes that can punch through their shields and hulls.”
Oh that’s big.
Normally you’ll need to disable the shields of a ship first before you can damage the ship directly but with a torpedo like that, it can punch a hole through the ship’s shield and do damage on the ship itself directly.
The only problem with it is that it’s really expensive and it’s also rather slow so if the ship has exceptional point defense weapons, the torpedo would get shot down before it can even reach the ship.
I nodded at the guy, “In that case, if they have a Destroyer or Cruiser, we’ll depend on you to disable them. No need to destroy them, just getting their engines out will be good enough. My ship will be able to finish them off.”
One of the other captains, a female with brown hair that covered half her face, also spoke up, “In the event that they have automated defenses, my ship is equipped with an EMP blaster that can disable them for short periods of time.”
Ah… That weapon can also be used to disable specific systems on a ship after their shields go down… And it’s a very favoured weapon amongst pirate ships for reasons that are pretty obvious which kind of suggests some things about this woman.
I won’t question it though and simply gave her a nod of understanding.
Another captain who had the ‘wizened old man’ look with his long white beard and eyebrows stroked his beard meaningfully.
“I’m not sure if this would be useful but just in case we need it… My ship is equipped with a minelayer. We can use it to set a trap or to lose pursuers if there are any.”
Hmm… This would be rather situational to use but I suppose it’s not like it’s useless either…
“Will you be able to deactivate and recall the mines after you place them?” I asked.
“It is equipped with that function, yes.”
“In that case, after we have secured the mining station, set up a mine field around the station in case they have patrol ships that weren’t there when we attacked.”
“Consider it done.”
Well that’s one aspect we don’t need to worry about I guess. Once we break through their defenses, we should be able to hold the position even if they were to send more people after us.
I doubt they have an entire fleet of ships anyway so this shouldn’t be a problem.
I waited to see if there was anyone else who wanted to say something and was not disappointed when another captain who looked like your stereotypical nerd with glasses and skinny frame spoke up.
“I just want to ask… What will we do with the salvage?”
Err… That’s a good question…
I turned to Amber and she tapped on the communications console to open up a voice channel for herself.
“The one who gets the kill will have a claim over the salvage. If there’s a dispute, the loot will be shared. Anything else you find floating out in space is yours to claim. You are free to give up any claim you do not want but that would make the salvage a free for all.”
Seeing that all the captains were nodding at her answer, I’m going to assume that this was the standard way to do things here.
So that means if we want more salvage, we’ll have to score the last hits on the enemy ships. Otherwise, we’ll have to fight with the other Merc captains for loot.
Despite the fact that we were supposed to be on the same team, we’re still competitors for loot.
Seeing that no one else had anything to add, I guess that’s all we have for now.
I nodded at the captains, “Alright then… We’ll stop at the area as planned and do another survey of the place to see if we need to have a new plan to deal with whatever defenses they have in store for us over there. In the meantime, keep your ship’s weapons primed and ready. The two captains who will be following us to board the station, make sure you don’t get yourselves blown up in the fight.”
I shut off the call and now… It’s time to wait.
