Chapter 378: Start Of The Mining Station Raid
Everything was quiet.
At least, this must be what those thugs that were patrolling around that mining station were thinking right before a kinetic round fired from a railgun pierced through three ships and blew them up before anyone could even react.
The other gang ships scattered before a flight of Mercenary ships descended on them from out of nowhere, their guns firing at the enemy ships indiscriminately.
I had chosen to join them on my Verlandi instead of staying on board the Iridescence, the prime reason being that there were more enemy ships patrolling around the mining station than we thought.
We had stopped just outside normal radar range and initiated a long range scan just to see what we were dealing with.
Our scams thus showed that there were at least twenty A Class ships and six B Class ships while on our side, we only had three A Class ships, three B Class ships and one C Class ship.
Just by these numbers, we were already outnumbered almost four to one and that’s also not considering the possibility that there might be more of them either in the station’s hangar or patrolling further away.
There was no doubt that they all knew they were being targeted and placed every base on high alert because of this.
The moment we saw that, we came up with the plan of having my main ship provide long range fire support while Amber and I will lead the charge on the ships around the mining station and wipe them out.
When I got within weapons range, I switched off my Travel Drives while leaving my inertia Drive off, allowing my ship to keep the momentum it gained from the Travel Drives to continue my path towards the station while I powered up my weapons.
Speaking of which… The Inertia Drive is really a work of wonder as it basically makes the ships fly as if there is an atmosphere.
I’m not particularly sure how it worked and searching up on it only revealed something about using gravity or something, but what I know is that this thing was what prevents a ship from keeping its momentum when you’re flinging it through space.
By that, I mean like if I were to activate my ship’s thrusters and boost towards a certain direction, I would be able to stop and turn my ship in a U-turn pretty easily as the Inertia Drive will slow us down when we stop propelling ourselves in that direction.
It is also the reason why ships don’t accidentally crash into others when exiting out of a Travel Drive as it would slow them down dramatically the moment they exit the mode.
If you don’t think that’s impressive, a ship that’s travelling at a thousand times the speed of sound can come to a complete halt in less than five seconds because of this and everything on the ship wouldn’t be flung around either.
But if I were to shut that Inertia Drive off, the ship would maintain the momentum gained and continue travelling in the same direction.
Normally you would need some time to shut off your Travel Drives and power up your weapons, shields and thrusters which may leave you vulnerable as the Inertia Drive would slow your ship down and make you a sitting duck.
Which is why there’s this technique of shutting off your Inertia Drive first and turning off your Travel Drive before you reach your destination to allow you to power up those components while maintaining your speed before you kill it by activating the Travel Drive again.
I thought that this might be a technique only present in the game but it seems like the other Mercs have also done this before although not everyone is good at it.
By that I meant that the timing of turning on your Inertia Drive to stop at where you want to stop as some might turn it on too early or too late and end up overshooting or undershooting their target.
What about me?
Heh… I’ve perfected it.
I turned on my Inertia Drives and my ship slowed down to its normal speed at the exact place I wanted it to, which was right in the effective range of my Verlandi’s railgun turret.
I fired my photon laser at one ship while turning on my turret’s automatic targeting and watched it shoot at another fighter that had its back turned to me.
My laser shattered one of the B Class Heavy Fighter’s shields while the railgun completely smashed through an A Class fighter’s shield to blast through its hull as well, completely cutting the ship into two.
I then let the railgun turret target the vulnerable B Class ship and finished it off.
Right as I was looking for another target, another ship shot past me from the side in a flash of red.
Unsurprisingly, that was Amber’s ship as she flew in between two enemy fighters right before they were blown up by her ship’s ballistic cannons.
The rest of the Mercs also joined me as we all spread out to deal with the enemy ships that finally regained their bearings.
A hail of lasers and kinetic rounds started flying in between us and I had no time to worry about others as I weaved in between shots to dodge the oncoming hailstorm of deadly projectiles.

Two fighters seemed to have set their sights on me and they broke off from their flight to chase after me.
One of their energy bullets struck me from behind but my shield managed to protect me from the blow and I levelled my ship out to fly in a straight line.
Predictably, they took the bait and chased after me, unleashing another hail of energy bullets on me in an attempt to overwhelm my shields.
I flipped my Inertia Drives off and executed a hundred and eighty degree turn while maintaining my direction of travel using my side thrusters.
The moment I was facing the back, I pulled the trigger and fired both my energy chain guns and my ballistic cannons.
A mixture of energy and kinetic projectiles shredded the two fighters that had been behind me and I activated my Inertia Drive to stop my ship’s momentum, allowing the two wrecks to fly past me in a fiery explosion.
I returned to the area where the other Mercs were fighting and found one of them being chased by a group of three A Class Interceptors, their blasters currently firing non stop at the poor guy.
I tilted my ship and activated my thrusters to boost to their aid, firing two ballistic cannon shots that ripped through the interceptor at the very back of the group.
The remaining two seemed to have panicked as the both scattered to the left and right, giving the Merc I just saved a chance to turn their ship around and blast one of them into pieces with their autocannon.
When I prepared to turn to attack the other ship, the same Merc executed an upside down corkscrew turn and blasted that one apart as well.
“Thanks for the assist, Miss Tera!” The Merc’s voice came over the comms.
I feel like he actually didn’t need any help after all and was leading them into a trap from the start.
Well, whatever, I could give up my claim on the Interceptor to him for salvage if he wants it.
“The station has auto turrets!” Someone else shouted through the comms.
I turned to look at the station and, sure enough, there were automated turrets that started to pop out of their containers built on the station, no doubt to start firing at us.
“Disable them with the EMP blaster! I’ll take care of them!” I shouted into the comms.
Another Merc ship boosted towards the turrets fearlessly and I assume that was the Merc who told me she had the EMP blaster equipped on her ship.
I followed close behind her and her ship started shooting out blue balls of energy that struck at each turret accurately, disabling them without any problems.
A few of them managed to get a few shots off but they were quickly silenced soon after as her ship’s shield protected her from those attacks.
Her ship then flew past the station, allowing me to blast all the turrets apart safely.
I flew past the mining station as well and turned my ship around just in time to see a B Class Heavy Fighter speeding towards me with its weapons trained on me.
A hail of lasers peppered against my shield and I had to roll away as I saw my shield level drop down to half with that barrage.
I was about to angle my ship to get my railgun turret to take aim at the enemy before a laser pierced through the entire ship in a single shot, leaving it as a wreck to float off into space.
Thanks Lea, that was a nice shot.
The fight only lasted for a few minutes at most and the once busy space outside the mining station suddenly went quiet.
First phase complete, time to board.
