Chapter 384: Anyone Else Know How To Hack?
With Lea taking out the thugs with her sniper rifle, we managed to deal with the choke point without more casualties.
We only knew she cleared them out after she deactivated her camo and stood up, not even flinching as the illusionary bullets flew through her.
“The way is clear.”
Trusting her, I stepped out from the corner to inspect just what had our group pinned down.
At the end of this narrow corridor, there was a single door at the end with several barricades set up in front of it and dead thugs were littered behind them.
Propped up on the barricades were two energy chainguns which must have been what tore through the initial group of Mercs who tried to push through the barrage.
When we led the way down the corridor to reach the door, I realised that there were ten dead thugs even though Lea only fired her gun three times.
As expected of her I suppose.
Unsurprisingly, the door was locked.
I could, of course, hack into the door and unlock it, but just in case… I don’t want to show others that I could do it so easily lest they think I’m some genius hacker or realise it was because of my Codex and try to steal it.
“Can anyone get this door open?” I asked, looking at the Mercs behind us.
One of the Mercs flipped over a dead thug to pull out his personal terminal, tapping on it a few times before the door unlocked itself with an audible click.
Ah… Of course these guys would have access to the doors… I didn’t think of that…
The door slid open, revealing a passage between two glass windows which I suspect were bulletproof before ending at another door at the other side.
We quickly moved through that corridor and I realised that the security room was on the other side of the glass, meaning that’s where we needed someone to be.
Right now, that place seemed to be empty which was quite surprising.
Using the dead thug’s personal terminal to unlock the other door as well, we walked through to find two more thugs who were just as surprised to see us as we were to see them.
They fumbled with their guns that were holstered which was their first mistake since all of us already had our guns out. Thus, their action basically triggered a dozen or so Mercenaries to lift up their own weapons to gun them down.
Looking to the side of the dead thugs, I found a solid looking door which, by its positioning, should lead us to the security room.
I turned back to look at the Merc who had been using the dead thug’s personal terminal.
She looked up at me and shook her head, which told me that they did not have access to this door in particular.
I then set my eyes on the two dead thugs that we had just killed, rummaging through their belongings to search for their personal terminals.
I found it easily enough and tried to see if they had access to it.
Unfortunately, neither of them did.
So perhaps these thugs either did not have access to the security room… Or these guys never managed to open the door.
Thus, I asked the question of whether anyone in our group was able to open it once again.
One hand went up, belonging to a guy who was wearing some kind of blue visor over his eyes.
“Could I give it a shot?”
I gestured for him to go ahead before turning to the others, “Continue with the clearing of the station. We can’t give them any time to regroup or fortify their defenses!”
The Mercs let out a warcry and continued their advance to the deeper parts of the station.

Heh. That’s right, with them gone, whatever that’s inside the security room would be ours for the taking. At most we’ll just have to share some of the loot with this guy and that shouldn’t be too big of a problem.
The guy went over to the door and squatted down in front of it before taking out his personal terminal to connect to the door.
I peeked over his shoulder to see what was on his screen and… Well… It was as you might expect from someone trying to hack into something…
His entire screen seemed to be filled with lines of code and several windows even popped up as he was initiating different programs to try and gain access to it.
It took him about five minutes of typing away before he shut off his personal terminal to turn to me.
I see… So I guess maybe five minutes might be the standard time for this kind of hacking… In the event that I need to hide the fact that I can hack into things easily, I should probably just spend five minutes typing random stuff into my Codex to make it look like–
“Sorry… I can’t do it.”
My thoughts were interrupted by the guy’s confession.
I blinked at him, “Eh? Why not?”
He gestured at the door, “That thing has several layers of security and a failsafe that prevents one from gaining access to its internal systems without a passcode. It could still be done if I were to try and brute force it but… That’s going to take several days to maybe even weeks… Which I assume we’re not going to do here.”
Ah… Ok… I guess that’s probably why the thugs never bothered to try and hack into the security room since it doesn’t seem like it would be worth the effort anyway.
I nodded at him, “In that case, go join the others then… We’ll err.. See if there’s some other way to get in there. Maybe they left a passcode somewhere.”
“Understood.”
I watched him pick up his weapon before running off to join the rest of the Mercs in slaughtering the rest of the thugs.
Ries came over to my side, “Are you going to try as well, Boss?”
I grinned at her, “Of course~”
I tapped on my Codex and connected it to the door to begin the hack.
Honestly, I was half expecting it to fail or something after what that guy said but the same minigame popped up and I just went ahead to complete it.
In just a few seconds, I had unlocked the door and it slid open soundlessly.
Easy.
The girls and I stepped inside and we found a security console on one side and then another door that should lead to the weapons locker that would arm the security forces on this station.
Opening that door, we found several assault rifles and even a few personal shields as well.
These would at least net us a good twenty to forty thousand credits at least.
“Tera? We need you to hack into this as well,” Amber called out to me while pointing at the security console.
I went over to her and found that the console needed a password to be activated so I went ahead to hack into it to bypass that requirement.
The screens on the console came to life as it broadcasted the security feed from the station’s various cameras directly in front of us.
From the video feed, I could see that a good number of the cameras showed destroyed sections of the station. Some of them even had their walls broken apart to show the vacuum of space outside.
Out of all the cameras, I would say about seventy five percent of it were displaying sections of the station that were completely destroyed, most likely from the supposed impact of the military ship with this station.
If this was the damage it caused from the impact, I wonder what happened to the people who might have been in these parts of the station? Especially since I don’t see dead bodies floating around on the video feeds.
Maybe they were lucky and everyone was away from these rooms when it happened? Well, not like it mattered to me… Ok, fine, I was kind of thinking if there might be loot in those places as well and if it would be worth our time to check it out.
Since I don’t really see anything valuable from the camera, I guess the answer would be no.
“Tera… Look.”
I was brought out of my musings when Amber tugged on my sleeve to point at one of the screens.
When I turned to see what she wanted me to see, I realised that the screen was showing us a deeper part of the station where the Mercs had yet to reach.
On the screen were at least a dozen or so of the power armour that we had found inside the storeroom.
The only difference was that the thugs had successfully hacked into these and were currently in the midst of suiting up in order to fight back against the Mercs.
Oh damn… Now I know why they didn’t bother hacking the security door… They poured all their resources into hacking into those power armour instead…
