Chapter 401: Just Kite It
Since our targets were smaller than the size of A Class fighters, I thought our main guns would be useless.
Yet, I was watching Lea shoot down swaths of those little things with our High Intensity Laser like she was reaping wheat in a field with a scythe.
One of the reasons why she was mainly only using that turret to shoot at them was because I was keeping them behind us and we had a limited arc of fire to engage the swarm.
Right now, I was focused on piloting the ship as we had to kite those things around the station to avoid getting caught by them.
The good news was that they don’t seem to be really smart so they were just mindlessly chasing after us instead of attempting any flanking manoeuvres.
So as long as we stayed aware of where they were and kept ahead of the swarm, we didn’t need to risk getting cau–
“They’re speeding up!!” Amber yelled out a warning.
I switched my gaze to the map screen and sure enough, the bunch of red dots behind us was getting closer and closer.
I then changed one of the screens to show the external cameras at the back of the ship and I realised that several of those Psionic Chrysalis had somehow merged together to form a larger sized type which somehow made them faster.
They even seemed to have gotten smarter as well since they were actually dodging and weaving around in an attempt to avoid the lasers that were being shot out by Lea.
Of course, the only ones that they could avoid were the lasers that she was firing that weren’t specifically targeting them. But if she were to focus a shot on those larger sized ones, she would be able to score a hit.
And these larger sized ones seemed to know that which was why they were intentionally moving away from the swarm and trying to flank us.
“Lea?” I called out to our Alv.
“I see them, Mistress.”
The autocannons that could rotate to the back did so and started firing a hail of kinetic rounds at the larger sized Chrysalis.
They tried to dodge the rain of death but there was too many and their larger size ended up becoming a hindrance as they could not move fast enough to completely avoid being hit.
All of them ended up getting shredded to pieces by the autocannon rounds, leaving Lea free to take her time shooting the swarm with the High Intensity Laser turret.
But just as I was thinking that the matter was dealt with, the remaining Psionic Chrysalis on the screen pulled back and started converging together.
The black matter wrapped around the crystal body before flying towards the centre of the swarm where it seemed to start merging itself into a large black ball.
Lea tried to shoot another laser at it but it only managed to burn a little past the surface which the black ball quickly healed up to leave no evidence of being hit.
“What the hell is it doing?” I asked.
“I guess… It’s transforming?” Amber answered.
As though on cue, the black matter shifted to reveal a tiny crystal at the very top before it resumed its chase towards us. The problem was that now our High Intensity Laser was only able to burn the surface of the black matter and not do any real damage to it.
With all of the Chrysalis combined together, it was now just a little bigger than our ship.
When Lea tried to aim at the small crystal instead, the crystal sank back inside the black matter to reappear somewhere else.
Clearly that was its weak point but for some reason, it wasn’t able to hide it inside the black matter or even move it behind it so that we didn’t have a clear shot. Every time it reappeared it was somewhere that we had line of sight to.
Perhaps it also has the function of serving as the thing’s eyes and without it poking out, it can’t see us?
I turned to the girls, “Seriously, why can it do that?”
Amber grimaced, “I think this is the first time anyone has seen Psionic Chrysalis behave this way, Tera…”
“Is it because of the station then? Is someone controlling them?”

“I… Do not know…”
“Well fuck, we still have to take care of it if we want to go to that station! Anyone have any ideas?”
Lea leaned out of her chair to look at me, “Mistress… If we bring all the guns to bear, I might be able to distract it with the other guns in order to land a hit on the crystal.”
“That would mean we have to slow down though and there’s a chance that thing will catch up to us.”
“That is correct, Mistress. And the latter will only happen if I am unable to kill it.”
Hmmm… Fuck it, I trust Lea so let’s take the risk.
Let’s see if I can execute an emergency turn with this ship…
“Everybody hold on tight!” I warned.
The girls all sounded out an affirmative as they strapped themselves in
After getting their acknowledgement, I activated the side thrusters of the ship’s left bow and the side thrusters of the ship’s right stern, putting them into overdrive.
I felt myself pinned to the seat as the intense G forces of the manoeuvre pushed down on me to the point that it was hard to breathe.
This was way different than doing an emergency turn on the Verlandi… But for a ship this size to be able to move that quickly was already impressive by itself so I can’t complain.
All of us managed to endure through the discomfort until our broadside was now facing towards the giant black blob.
Lea wasted no time in activating all the guns and a hail of laser and kinetic rounds started flying towards the surface of the blob.
The gigantic Psionic Chrysalis seemed to panic slightly as it slowed down to start protecting its crystal from being hit by the deadly hail.
It also looks like it wasn’t completely invulnerable as pieces of the black matter started flaking off under our concentrated fire and it started to shrink.
While the lasers burned away the black matter like it was melting candle wax, the kinetic rounds were bouncing off the surface but also blasting chunks of it away wherever it hit.
Without warning, the giant Chrysalis shot itself towards us, as if it was doing a last ditch attempt at getting to use by ignoring all defense to fly towards us.
No… It wasn’t ignoring defense, some of the black matter had formed themselves into what looked like giant fingers to cover over the crystal to protect its only vulnerable spot.
“Lea?!” I called out, my hand resting on the ship thrusters in preparation to boost us away.
“I have it, Mistress,” She said simply.
The universe seemed to slow as the railgun turret on the top deck of our ship fired a single kinetic round.
I watched as the round flew towards the Chrysalis at blinding speed, the projectile heading straight towards the… Wait a minute…
I narrowed my eyes and I realised the round wasn’t headed towards the crystal and seemed to be off the mark by just a tiny bit.
I thought that this might not have been the killing round Lea meant to shoot until I saw the kinetic round hitting one of the ‘fingers’ of the hand.
Unsurprisingly, the kinetic round bounced off the ‘finger’ though it did blow the entire finger away.
Lea must be aiming to blow the fingers away one by one to uncover the crystal but do we even have enough time?
That was what I was thinking until I realised the kinetic round had bounced off the finger to head directly towards the crystal.
There was a brilliant flash of light that was half covered by the remaining ‘fingers’ of the Chrysalis before the blob of black matter started to disintegrate, the black matter literally peeling off and floating out into space leaving only a broken crystal shard behind.
“Are those crystal bits worth a lot?” I asked.
Mara was the one who answered, “They are, actually. Psionics are able to make use of the crystals to augment their Psionic abilities somewhat so there’s a market for them.”
Oh nice, I was almost afraid that we might have used all that ammo for nothing~
“In that case, launch the drones and collect as much of the crystal shards as possible!” I ordered.
Ries gave me a thumbs up, “Already on it, Boss!”
Isn’t it nice to have such reliable crew mates?
Alright, we just need to slowly fly towards the station while the drones are collecting the crystals and we should be done by the time we reach the station.
At this point, I believe there’s still people on board but since we’ve already come this far, we’re not going back now.
