Chapter 402: It’s Dark In Here
“Boss? Scans show that the life support systems on the station are offline,” Ries announced as we got closer to the station.
Shit… That means there might not be any air in the station which means we’re going to need to wear space suits.
The very unfortunate thing is that the tighter and more flexible space suits are more expensive and not really sold all the way out in these outer colonies so the people here are still stuck with the bigger and bulkier space suits.
Uggh… I don’t want to wear them if I can help it but since there’s a possibility of the station being devoid of air, we have no choice.
Maybe if we can find the power generators and switch it back on then we wouldn’t need to worry about that.
Although this confirms one thing at least. If the life support systems are offline, the possibility of people still on this station would be really low.
No wait… I just got reminded of how I first met those pirates when I woke up on my Verlandi.
They might have just switched it off on purpose to lower our guard. We’ll have to make sure that it’s really empty before we relax about this.
Anyway, let’s prepare to board it…
*
Our ship docked on the station and I did a final check on my equipment, making sure that my shotgun was loaded and I had my spare ammo tucked away in the proper places.
It was a little bit more difficult to move since I was wearing a space suit but it was still manageable at least.
I was a little surprised that Mara decided to wear one as well, since I remembered that little tidbit that Psionics could survive in the vacuum of space.
When I asked her why she was wearing one, she simply told me that it was just another layer of protection for her and it’s not like it hindered her anyway.
Oh yeah, she’s just going to use her telekinetic abilities so it didn’t matter…
Anyway, once I was done making sure everything was strapped in, I turned back to look at the rest of my party, all of them also doing their own equipment checks.
I initially wanted Ries to stay behind to watch the ship but she insisted on coming along and that the drones would be able to do that job.
The reason I thought for her to stay was because she no longer had the light machine gun backpack as she had disassembled it to use for restoring the Power Armour.
But then she had argued that if we were to come across any complicated machinery, we would need her expertise to decipher it so I ended up agreeing to let her come along.
“Comms check?” I called out, prompting the rest of the girls to also respond through our space suit’s comms to make sure that they were working.
Once the girls have confirmed their comms’ status, I continued, “Alright then… Let’s confirm our objectives again.”
Amber raised a hand, “Look for valuables!”
I nodded, “Since this is a military installation, there must be military equipment around so look for anything that might sell including any data storage devices. Second, look out for enemies. Third, don’t take anything that doesn’t look safe to handle or looks alien, got it?”
The girls all echoed out in an affirmative.
I was quite insistent about the last one because the last thing I needed was someone bringing some egg looking object back then we realised something hatched and it’s now loose inside the ship.
I’ve seen enough movies and played enough games to know that was the worst thing that could happen.
I turned towards the airlock and couldn’t help myself but to give another warning, “We don’t know what to expect so be prepared for anything.”
The air started venting out of the airlock before the door started to cycle open. I raised my shotgun to point at the door, the others also following suit in case there was an ambush waiting outside the door for us.
Thankfully, there wasn’t anybody on the other side of the door and it seemed like the coast was clear, though there was absolutely no light and there were things floating around.
“Umm… Oxygen levels… At critical levels, Boss. Artificial gravity generators are also offline,” Ries reported.

Yeah, I can see that the artificial gravity is offline since the boxes in the corridor ahead of us were floating in the air.
We were still affected by our own ship’s artificial gravity generator which was why we were not floating yet, but once we stepped past the doorway, we would also be floating too.
Alright, no big deal. There were zero G environments in the game too so this isn’t anything new to me.
Plus, this wouldn’t be the first time I’m floating in zero G in this new universe anyway.
Although the fact there was lack of air meant that the likelihood of there being anyone here was low, you can’t be too careful so let’s assume that they were also wearing space suits and lying in wait.
“Let’s move,” I ordered, stepping past the doorway and switching on the lights on my helmet.
The moment I stepped past the doorway, a sense of weightlessness washed over me and I started to float.
My suit’s air thrusters came online and all I needed was to lean a little forward for it to activate and push me forward in the direction of where I was leaning.
The girls floated along behind me through the corridor which led towards another doorway where a large box was left floating in the centre.
Thankfully, the door was left open so despite the station not having power, we were able to go through it.
All we need is to just push this box away which was easy to do with a simple shove.
I paused there to peek inside and I realised that this was a security checkpoint.
Hanging from the ceiling were two machine gun turrets which were of course offline and there was some weird looking machine in the middle with a narrow walkway through it. I’m guessing this must be some security scanner of some sort.
I was a little concerned that moving through it might activate the turrets so I kept my shotgun trained on it as I floated through it.
Thankfully, nothing of that sort happened and all of us got through the checkpoint and into the station proper.
Scanning around with my head lamps, the area behind the security checkpoint seemed to be some sort of waiting area with all the chairs that were arranged in neat rows facing away from the checkpoint.
These chairs were bolted to the ground so they weren’t floating around, allowing me to use them to pull myself towards the open doorway on the other side of the room.
I let myself float slowly towards the side of the door before I bumped into the wall to stop myself while holding on to the doorframe to stop myself from bouncing too far.
Amber followed after me and I let go of my shotgun to let it float in front of me so that I had a free hand to grab her hand as she got close.
The other girls then also jumped over one by one and I continued to hold on to Amber’s hand until the others were stacked up against the door.
Once everyone was secured, I took back my shotgun that was floating in front of me and turned towards the doorway.
Mentally preparing myself, I pulled myself towards the doorway and swung my shotgun to point inside the next room.
Hmm… The next area after this was a dark corridor devoid of any signs of life so I felt a little silly for being so cautious.
“Clear,” I spoke into the comms, using the suit’s thrusters to propel myself into the corridor.
Oh, looks like there’s signs on the wall. Let’s see what we got here…
To the left we have Research Labs, Generator Room, Cafeteria, Recreation Room and Meeting Rooms eight to ten. To the right we have the Experimental Labs, the Security Room, the Archives, Meeting Rooms one to seven and… The Play Rooms?
Why would there be a playroom here? Do they let them bring their kids here onto the station or something?
Now that I think about it… Maybe they have to live here since this place was not connected to a Warp Gate and it’s also supposed to be a secret military base… So maybe they are required to live here on the station and have to bring their family as well?
Well, either way… I guess it’s clear where we should go first.
I turned back to the girls, “Generator room?”
All of them nodded in agreement.
Right, first we go and check the generator room to see if we can bring the power back online. If we could, it would make things easier here.
To the generator room!
