Chapter 404: Getting The Generator Running Again
Ok, no big deal… We’re now stuck in the generator room where a horde of alien creatures who want to eat our brains are on the other side of the door.
The only good thing is that they weren’t zombies, I guess…
But with their characteristics, I think I could just classify them as psychic zombies.
“Ok… So I guess we’re safe for now… Right?” I asked.
Mara nodded, “They should not be able to break through that door.”
“That door looked like it was thick enough to withstand a direct shot from a ship’s rail gun. So unless those things have that type of power, they shouldn’t be able to get through,” Ries chimed in.
And Mara had torn that door into two with just her mind… Psionics are so OP…
I looked around the room, “But that also means that we’re trapped here, aren’t we? Is there another way out?”
All the girls also started to look around the generator room, shining the light on their helmets to illuminate the area.
First thing we noticed was that this room was way larger than we thought. We weren’t even in the generator room yet but instead, we were in front of another security checkpoint.
Why do you need another security checkpoint inside the station itself? Are you worried about there being imposters in the station or something? Where would those imposters even come from?
You know what? Considering the fact that there’s a whole swarm of Psionic Chrysalis outside the room right now, just pretend that I didn’t say anything.
Floating through the security checkpoint that looked even more complicated than the one at the entrance, we entered a large, circular hall where some kind of giant tube took up most of the room in the centre, rising up from the ground to rise all the way past the ceiling.
I’m guessing this was the generator.
There was a walkway that circled around the pillar to reach a staircase that went to what looked like a control room on the other side.
Right now, the pillar generator thingy was completely silent and devoid of life so our next task was obviously to get it started up.
I pointed to the room at the other side and the other girls gave me nods of acknowledgement.
Hefting my shotgun in my hand, I aimed myself at the control room and kicked at the ground to launch myself towards it.
The other girls followed suit and our little group flew past the side of the generator and it was only now that I realised there was some kind of glass casing around it.
Thankfully I didn’t crash into that casing since I wasn’t aiming myself directly at the generator but off to the side. But Amber ended up bumping into it and letting out a curse as she had to adjust her course to avoid spinning away.
We reached the room that jutted out like some kind of observatory at the back and unfortunately, the door leading to the room was also closed shut.
Fortunately, that wasn’t a problem for Mara as she easily wrenched it open with her Psionic power.
I peeked inside the room with my shotgun to make sure the coast was clear. Can’t assume that there weren’t any Psionic Chrysalis in here after all.
The good thing was that it was completely empty though it still didn’t change the fact that it was rather surreal to find another room that would have been filled with people now completely dark and empty.
Inside the room was a console overlooking the generator while the other half of the room had tables that were bolted to the ground with chairs, stationary and loose parts floating around.
I immediately turned to the console and tried to make sense of it, wondering if there was a way to turn it on.
Seeing a whole mass of buttons and stuff staring back at me, I immediately gave up and turned to our Maochatte.
“Ries? Can we turn it on? Maybe we can use the station’s security systems to deal with those Psionic Chrysalids.”
She floated beside me and took over in inspecting the console, looking for something that I clearly have no idea what.
“Oh, I know this one. Had to work on maintaining one on a mining station before. It’s a little troublesome to start up but I should be able to do it. We’ll need to do it manually in order to give this console a jump start though. Otherwise it’s useless,” Ries explained.

I nodded at her, “What do we need to do?”
She looked outside at the generator, “I’ll need someone out there to find a crank that should be located at the base of the generator and give it a few spins.”
Lea nodded, “I’ll do it, It’s a red lever with a black tip at the end right?”
“Eh? I didn’t know you are also versed in generators,” Ries called out in surprise.
She shook her head, “Not at all. I merely saw it when we were floating past.”
As expected of our sniper to have the most awareness of our surroundings I suppose.
Lea left the control room and kicked off the wall to propel herself down towards the base of the pillar. Following her direction, I could see the crank in question attached to the side of a small box which I definitely would have overlooked if I didn’t know what I was looking for.
I watched the Alv crank the lever a few times and the console sparked to life for a moment.
Ries immediately went to push a button at the end and the console shook a little before lights flashed on and dials started to move
“That worked, you can come back now, Lea!” Ries called out through the comms.
Lea did just that while Ries busied herself with manipulating the console like a pianist playing a piano, twisting dials, pushing buttons and moving throttle levers.
Then all of a sudden, lights started flashing on the surface of the pillar outside and I felt the thrum of something coming to life underneath me.
I thought everything was going smoothly until it sputtered and the light went out almost as quickly.
Should have known that things weren’t going to be that easy…
“Fuck!” Ries cursed cutely.
“What’s wrong with it?” I asked.
“The ion capacitors failed… That means they must have burned out or something. I’ll need to replace them if we want to start this thing up.”
“Is that possible given our current situation? Considering we can’t leave the room?”
She looked out at the dormant generator again, “I… Should be able to… There should be spares laying around here…”
She turned back to look at the back of the room where a whole mess was just floating around the entire area before tuning to us
“Umm… Could you help me look for a cylindrical object that looks like a capsule except it’s see-through and has a squiggly line inside it?”
Ask and you shall receive~
All of us started to search through the mess to look for the object that Ries described.
Unfortunately, it seems like our luck didn’t hold because that object in question was nowhere to be found.
Ries sunk into thought for a moment before going back to the console, ‘No big deal… I think I hould be able to reroute the systems and sacrifice a little bit of the power generated by bypassing the refining process and activating the manual release pumps…”
She started flipping switches again and lights started flashing on the generator again, although the intensity of the light was significantly lower than the first time it started up.
Still, it didn’t shut down abruptly this time so it was already a better outcome.
Ries moved to the far end where a screen had turned on and she started tapping on it to configure some options where the terms made no sense to me and right then, the generator let out a small blast of electricity that arced around its surface which was contained inside the glass container around it.
Looks like Ries did it!
I was about to celebrate when Ries turned back to me with a grimace.
“Boss… Good news, the generator is working again… Bad news, it isn’t operating at full power… We only have enough to power up two systems of this station… There are the security systems which include powering the cameras and turrets, the electronics system which powers the terminals and doors, the light system, the life support system and the artificial gravity system…”
God damn it… Well it’s obvious which two we will need to take since we need the security systems to activate the turrets to take care of the Psionic Chrysalids and the door controls so we won’t be stuck behind one like just now…
That means we’ll still need to wear our suits and fight in the dark while in zero G…
How perfect…
