Chapter 410: The Place Is Rigged
“Ok, what the fuck was that thing?” I asked, pointing at the armoured door.
All the girls looked at one another before turning to shrug at me.
So even they don’t know what that is? I was expecting them to tell me it’s some other alien creature or maybe some military thing like a biological defense animal or something, I dunno.
But if they don’t know about it…
“What should we do with it then?” I asked.
“Do we need to do anything? Just keep it locked behind that door. Wouldn’t that be good enough?”
Right then, I saw the door shake and I knew that the thing behind the door was ramming itself against it.
I gestured at the door worriedly, “It’s not going to break out of there, is it?”
Ries hesitated before answering, “I think it shouldn’t be able to? The door looks quite thick from when it was being opened…”
The door shook again and I shuddered a little, “Let’s not risk it. Let’s also start looting the room and taking any valuable information and anything that looks like they’re worth some credits with us. Then once we’re done saving those kids, we just bail the hell out of here.”
The other girls nodded in agreement so I guess our plan was set.
I turned back to Ries, “How are the drones doing?”
She looked back at the console, “Most of them have already gathered outside the station… I think there’s still a few stragglers that are still caught up in fighting those things… Should we wait?”
“No, let’s take what we have and go. I don’t want to spend any more time than we have to here. Empty out those lockers, pack them in a box and push it along with us. We’ll have the drones clear the way for us to the Archives to get all their information downloaded before we move onto the Research Labs.”
The girls did just that while I joined them in gathering up everything that looked remotely valuable here before pushing them all to the entrance of the security room.
There was quite a number of stuff here including guns, shields, ammunition and even more guns.
I thought about sifting through the weapons to see if there were any that we could use but all of them to be just standard rifles with nothing really special about them.
I suppose since they weren’t really expecting to face anything really threatening, this much was enough for them.
The guns and equipment would still fetch quite a high price since they’re military grade after all and the black market buys this stuff up really quickly so these would already make this trip worth it.
Then the information… I’m hoping that using Mara’s connections, we might be able to find some people to blackmail for money.
I haven’t forgotten the other blackmail material we got from the pirate but right now we don’t really have a chance to use that batch yet.
We left the security room and I got to see the door shake another time, evidence that whatever was behind it has still not given up trying to smash down the door.
Hopefully that door would be able to hold whatever that thing was from escaping…
We left the security room and I made sure to lock the door and place the turret around it on high alert so even if it did manage to escape, it would still have to deal with this door and also the turrets outside of that door.
The best case scenario would be, of course, that it doesn’t break out from that room of course.
Outside the security room, I found an entire horde of drones waiting for us, all of them ready to escort us to our destination.
I believe there must be at least several hundred drones there at the very least with how much space they took up in the corridor.
Normally I would be glad to see this many drones on our side but our opponent has virtually infinite number of reinforcements so numbers were not on our side.
We will need to strike hard and fast, disabling them from sending more Psionic Chrysalis through those portals as fast as possible to reduce the number of enemies we might need to face.
The longer we take to reach them, the more disadvantaged we would be.

“Alright, let’s go,” I ordered.
As one, we started moving to the Archives once again, the drones floating alongside us while keeping an eye out for more of those Psionic Chrysalis.
Surprisingly, we didn’t meet any on the way there despite our large group and the fact that most of the station’s defenses had already gathered here, leaving the other parts relatively undefended.
We entered the Archives and immediately made a beeline for that console in the centre where I turned to face Ries.
“What now?” I asked.
She took out her personal terminal and plugged it into the console with a grin, “Now… I just need to download the information here, Boss~”
Well… I guess that’s easy.
“How long will it take?”
“Give or take a few minutes. It shouldn’t take that long.”
I blinked at her, “Wait, really? But there must be thousands upon thousands of files in there! You can really just transfer everything in a few minutes?”
She nodded, “That’s because I brought this high speed transfer cable, Boss. I thought we might need it for something like this so I came prepared~”
I didn’t even know there was such a thing… No wait. I don’t mean the existence of a high speed cable but the fact that there was one in this universe was what surprised me.
I nodded at our Maochatte to go ahead and she immediately got to work.
She went over to the side of the console and opened up a port that she plugged her cable into before she started to tap on her personal terminal.
Soon enough, a progress bar appeared and the words ‘Downloading’ could be seen above it.
Already, I could see a green colour filling it up rather quickly and I realised Ries’s ‘few minutes’ was really just one or two minutes.
Damn… Future tech is really something, huh?
Right as the bar filled up until there was only a quarter more to go, it suddenly stopped and the monitor on the console lit up to show several words on the screen.
‘Data migration detected. Initiating Silence Protocol. Station will self-destruct in sixty minutes. Please evacuate all personnel and assets.’
The progress bar then continued filling up again after that as if nothing happened.
I turned to look at the girls and all of them gave me the exact same look that told me they had also seen the same thing as I did and I wasn’t imagining it.
I tried to connect my Codex to it, hoping that I can stop the self-destruct sequence by hacking it or something, but no such option popped up on my Codex.
Either this can’t be stopped or I have to hack this somewhere else in order to stop it and I don’t think I have the time to be wandering around the station to look for it.
“We have no time to lose then… Once Ries is done downloading those files, we’re making a run for the Research Labs and getting those kids out of here.”
Lea tilted her head, “What will we do after rescuing those kids though? We’re not going to take them with us, are we?”
Right… I actually didn’t think that far… I just thought that we should at least rescue them from such a fate…
“Is there like… Maybe an orphanage we can put them in?” I asked.
Amber let out a small chuckle, “Don’t worry Tera. There are a few of those in the outer colonies. We can drop them off there after we rescue them.”
Oh that’s good to hear. I was worried that we might have needed to add all these kids to our crew after we rescued them and it’s going to be a pain to deal with them while in space….
There was a soft notification ding and Ries turned to me, “Boss, the download is done. I also synced the time of the supposed station’s self-destruct to our personal terminals.”
I lifted up my Codex and sure enough, there was now a countdown timer at the top right of the screen that showed we still had fifty eight minutes and forty three seconds left.
Ok… Looking at the map, I had already marked out which research lab contained the kids so we just need to go to those and save them.
Judging by the distance of this Archive to those rooms in question, I believe we have enough time to get to all the Research Labs in just ten minutes or so.
I turned to the girls, “Alright, we can do this! Rush to the Research Labs, rescue those kids and get the hell out of here! Priority mission is to get everyone out! Secondary objective is to pick up anything that looks valuable and take it back with us! But don’t risk your life to get something if the timer starts running low, we can still salvage them, got it?!”
All of them nodded or replied affirmatively.
Alright then, let’s go save those kids and get the fuck out of here!
