Chapter 416: Psionic Shadows
I looked at the transformed kids in front of me who were all gathered together and… Err… Holding hands right now.
I think they were doing some kind of Psionic thing because I could see some kind of aura surrounding them which was vibrating visibly.
“What are they doing?” I asked, leaning over to Mara.
Mara frowned slightly, “I believe they are sharing their minds, if that makes sense. Sort of like making a hivemind.”
Ok… I don’t know if that is cool or scary… But since they are on our side, I’ll just settle with cool.
The whole thing only lasted for a few seconds before they turned to me at the same time. Somehow, despite only three of them having eyes, it felt like I was being watched by a whole crowd for some reason.
“So what are these things?” I asked.
Amber shrugged, “I dunno… Mutated Psionic Chrysalis? Hybrid Chrysalis? Kidsalis?”
“Maybe they are the first of their kind? So Boss gets to name them?” Ries suggested.
Right… That’s actually a scary thought… But at least it might mean there’s no other experiments being made like this?
“Do you guys have a name?” I asked, feeling a little dumb for asking that since I was still wearing my helmet and they shouldn’t be able to hear me.
Oh wait, my external speakers should be on, but can they even hear me when there’s no air here?
All of them tilted their heads at me simultaneously.
I don’t think they heard me but they probably know that I was trying to ask them a question.
Mara turned to me with an odd grin on her face, “Why don’t you just name them, Captain?”
Why me?
Wait, why are all of you staring at me like it’s already decided I’m going to be the one that name them? Even the transformed kids themselves seem to be staring at me.
“Really? I don’t even… Fuck it. Err… How about Psionic Shadows?”
“Oh~ That sounds cool~” Amber chuckled.
The newly named Psionic Shadows seem to think so as well since they suddenly went up to hug me before letting go.
“Ok… Now what?” I asked no one in particular, wondering if we should be running or were they planning to fight back against that monster that was still outside somewhere.
All six of them stretched out their hands and an image was projected into the air.
At first I didn’t understand what it was being projected until I realised it was a star system.
The image shifted as though it was zooming out and a line was drawn connecting that star system to another one.
It then zoomed in on the new star system on a specific planet before stopping there.
“I think… They want us to bring them there?” Ries muttered, narrowing her eyes at the star map.
“Why? What is there?” I asked.
A new image appeared above and it looks like some kind of building?
Oh wait, they must be trying to say that it’s their home.
Although I’m not sure if this was the home of the kids or these Psionic Shadows.

I frowned at it, “Do we know where it even is?”
As though hearing my question, the map zoomed out again to show the entire star system before zooming in on the line that connected it to the first star system.
Then, in that star system, it further zoomed in on a specific part of the system to show a space station.
Oh wait, that’s the space station we were currently in!
The map then slowly panned over to the side to show what looked like a hole that marked the start of the line that linked towards the other system.
“There’s another Natural Space Highway in this system?!” Amber gasped.
I turned to her, “Is that a big deal?”
Amber opened her mouth before pausing for a moment, “I want to say yes but… Well… It’s not that rare but also not that common either… I guess it’s like finding an interestingly shaped asteroid while flying in space?”
I don’t even know how common is that and isn’t what’s interesting subjective in the first place?
Oh well… At least I understood that it was kind of rare but not really that rare to the point that it might cause some big uproar over it.
So I guess we have to take them on our ship and then bring them to that planet in that case…
Are we sure this is safe? Like they won’t betray us and then consume us or something right?
And this planet… Could we even land on it? Are there going to be some kind of dangerous alien creature there that might kill us?
Then again… We are getting paid so there’s that I suppose.
“Ahem… Just asking… How much does an intact Psionic Crystal sell for?” I asked.
All of us looked at Mara.
She paused for a moment, “Hmm… That would depend on who we are selling it to. But a safe estimate would probably be around several hundred thousand Credits per crystal.”
I blinked at her, “And what about the shards?”
“They measure those by weight and that also varies depending on who is buying. So they can go for as cheap as only a dozen or so Credits per kilogram to even several thousand Credits per gram.”
“Isn’t the range a little too big?” I pointed out.
She gave me a wry smile, “On one side are people who don’t even know what they are and on the other side are Psionics who are really desperate to get them.”
Alright… Fair enough.
Just saying, the intact Psionic Crystal seems to weigh around a hundred grams or so.
At least, that’s what I think from judging its size since we’re still in zero gravity so there was no way for me to be sure how heavy it was.
Anyway, I suppose with that kind of price, it’s worth the risk for this job.
“Fine then… We’ll have to bring them back to the ship. Anyone against it?” I asked.
Surprisingly, none of them rejected the idea.
I thought for sure there might be some protests or maybe even another suggestion on how to deal with them instead.
Since everyone is in agreement, then there’s no other–
My thoughts were interrupted when the wall at the back of the Research Lab got blasted apart.
Unsurprisingly, it’s the giant lizard monster.
And by how its saliva was literally floating out of its mouth and its eyes firmly locked on the Psionic Shadows… I don’t think it’s going to let us go that easily this time.
“Run?” I whispered.
“Run,” All the girls agreed.
I fired the first shot, the slug round blasting out from my gun to strike the monster in the side of the head and causing it to flinch slightly.
Of course, my main aim wasn’t to try and kill it but to take advantage of the blast to send me flying back towards the door.
The girls also did the same, all of us firing at the monster while moving back towards the door in unison.
The Psionic Shadows also directed the remaining Chrysalis to attack the giant monster as well, all of them charging towards it without fear.
This time, it seemed like the giant lizard was really focused on getting us because it completely ignored all the damage it was receiving and charged in our direction.
The large sized Psionic Chrysalis with the four arms formed a wall to stop its advance but the lizard rammed itself against the wall and threw them all back.
Thankfully, it did slow down the lizard’s momentum somewhat so we managed to reach the door with space to spare.
Which brought us to another problem.
“Where’s the hangar again?” I asked, looking around the corridor that was completely shrouded in darkness.
The Psionic Shadow with the figure of an adult woman grabbed me by the hand and started pulling me towards the left corridor.
Does it know where we are trying to go?
Right then, the door exploded outwards and the lizard appeared from the smashed remains of the door.
Fortunately for us, it could not stop its momentum and it ended up smashing through the wall on the other side and disappearing into the other room.
Deciding that this wasn’t a time to question where the Psionic Shadow was leading me, I let her pull me forward as we floated through the corridor with incredible speed.
Incidentally, the others were also being pulled along by their own Psionic Shadow as well, with the exception of Mara who was using her telekinesis to propel herself so she was able to keep up with us.
The lizard reappeared again by crashing through another wall to our right, its jaws opened wide and prepared to snap at us.
I reacted by shooting my shotgun at it, the slug round smacking it in the nose and pushing it back just enough to miss us and letting it crash into the wall behind us instead.
Holy crap man… This thing really isn’t stopping this time!
