Chapter 420: Amber’s Secret
I sighed after sipping my tea and placing the cup down on the counter.
All of us except Mara were gathered in the dining room where tea had been prepared so that we could listen to Amber’s story.
Mara wasn’t here since she already knew about it and was making sure we were on course on the bridge.
I looked at Amber, “Ok, so let’s start from the beginning I guess? Or wherever you think is a good starting point.”
She held her cup with both hands and sucked in a deep breath before letting out a deep sigh.
“Alright… First thing I have to say is that they did mess with my memories somewhat so I don’t remember everything. I will also explain the memory part as well in a little bit but I’ll start with what I remember first… One of the first things I remember was sitting on a table and being held down with straps. I distinctly remember a face looming over me and he was shining a light in my eyes before he pulled away. Then a mechanical arm came down with a syringe loaded with the drug which, of course, I did not know what it was at that time, but it was injected into my arm. Then I felt pain and blacked out.”
I grimaced, “That was… How long ago?”
“I’m not very sure… They don’t really let us know the time but I do remember that I was quite small at that time since everything looked big to me.”
“What about before that?”
“I don’t remember what my life was like before that. It’s like my past was totally wiped clean. I don’t know where I’m from, whether I had family or even how I ended up there. Everything before that moment was just gone.”
“They can just… Wipe memories like that?”
Amber nodded, “It’s a secret but yes. And anyone outside the circle who says so is treated like a conspiracy theorist.”
Right… Figures that might be the case.
I nodded at her to go on.
She let out another sigh, “After that… Things were mostly a blur to me and my memory of it was very fragmented. The station was trying to create super soldiers so what they were trying to do was to make loyal Psionic soldiers who will not question any order and are fiercely loyal to them.”
“Like ‘them’ as in… The government?” Lea asked, the Alv having a really serious look on her face.
Amber shrugged, “Who knows? Might just be some people controlling it from the shadows and trying to do this to overthrow the current government. I never found out how deep this went, I just know that there were some involvement and that’s about it.”
I leaned forward in my seat, “So what did they do to wipe your memory?”
Amber tapped the side of her cheek with a finger, “There was an actual Psionic on the team. I think he was exiled or ran away from their family but he was working together with researchers. He came up with a mind altering technique where the moment we start confiding and talking about our experiences in being experimented on to someone or something that we are attached to but that person or thing does not share the same emotional attachment or were unaware about the experiment, everything that we said would be forgotten the next time we woke up.”
I blinked at her, “That… Sounds extremely convoluted.”
Ries suddenly smacked the table with her palm, “Oh! I know why! They are planning to use this on soldiers to prevent them from getting PTSD!”
Amber made a face, “I don’t know if that’s what they were trying to do… But I guess it makes sense?”
Our Maochatte hopped up and down on her seat, “I know this one! Because during the battle on planet Xetarva, there were quite a lot of soldiers who got traumatised by the fight and it even made it to the news that there was a massive increase in soldiers seeking therapy! But then somehow, the very next day, those soldiers were back on the frontlines again like nothing happened and fighting fit once more!”
“Wait, wait… You’re telling me they already got the tech for it?” I asked, horrified.
Ries shrugged, “I dunno, but maybe?”
I waved my hand, “Nevermind then, we’re getting side tracked, so that means you basically made yourself forget about the worst part of what you experienced by talking about it?”
Amber nodded, “There were a number of us, all of us still kids. They gave me a stuffed toy and that was the one that I basically started talking to and having my mind wiped because of it. There were other kids who would talk with psychiatrists who were in on the experiments or even each other. The whole thing was just one big experiment. I suppose one thing I should be glad about is that I don’t have much trauma about it thanks to that…”
Hardly something to be thankful for but I guess it’s better than nothing…
Amber took another sip of her tea before continuing, “So I do remember meeting some of the kids, but I believe they all died somewhere along the way. Everytime I recalled back, I was looking at a different batch of kids, since they made us stay in a large room together instead of having individual rooms… If I wasn’t wrong, every kid kept dying after a few experiments and I was the only one who was living through them all. That got them quite excited but the problem was that no matter how much of the drug they injected into me and how many testing they did, I wasn’t showing any signs of obtaining Psionic abilities.”
“How would they know that you don’t have it?” I asked.

“There were a lot of tests, like making me try to move a ball without touching it, lifting things physically that were obviously too heavy for me to move, putting me in a completely white room that was completely soundproof and then also putting me in a completely black room that was also soundproof. There might have been others but I just forgot about them.”
“Ok, that is making me worried about what you might have forgotten… Especially if the other kids were dying.”
She shrugged, “I wouldn’t know anyway. But I think most of them died from the drug and not because of the testing.”
Then I realised something, “Wait, you mentioned about forgetting stuff if you talk about it. Would you be alright after this?”
She giggled, “Ehehe~ You already know about this and I don’t believe you are apathetic towards me, are you, Tera?”
“Ah… I see. But does that mean that condition is still stuck with you?”
“For now… I’m hoping to be able to get rid of it somehow eventually. It’s fine anyway, I don’t intend to just tell everyone I meet about it.”
“So… I guess you ended up with a different power then? Being able to control fire?”
She shook her head, “No, Tera. I am also a Psionic. A man made one but a Psionic nevertheless.”
I blinked at her, “Then… That means Mara can also…”
“No, no. As you already know from her case, there are also differences in abilities between Psionics. There are the normal Psionics who are able to do the standard things like telekinesis and telepathy. Above them though, are Elemental Psionics.”
“Ok, that sounds really cool already, and I assume you are one?”
Amber nodded, “Mara would be considered a normal Psionic even though her mind reading abilities are way better than mine. But she is limited in her Psionic manipulation where she is only able to move objects that she can see, or as we might call it, on a macro level. But Elemental Psionics are able to manipulate things on a molecular level to create elements, though most of the time we would only be adept at controlling one element. For me, I guess you already figured out that my element is fire.”
“Right, but how does it work? You said you needed to use your suit’s oxygen to create the fire?”
She lifted her hand and started rubbing her index finger and thumb together, “That’s right. The way I do it is I get some air molecules, then create a little friction for heat… Add a little bit more air into it and…”
A flame appeared right above her thumb and finger just like magic, except now I know that it wasn’t magic but a manipulation of air particles to force heat in the air before spontaneously combusting it forcefully to create the fire.
She waved her hand around and the flame floated through the air to do a revolution around her before stopping in front of her again.
“That is so cool,” I muttered, transfixed by the fire.
She waved her hand and the fire winked out of existence, “Well, I guess you know this secret now. What do you think?”
“What do I think? I think you got hotter than before Amber!”
“Really? Then… Wanna fuck me on this table?”
My gods Amber… At least finish your tea first…
