Chapter 423: Amber Was Cheating
I stumbled into the bridge, almost tripping over the last step as I entered.
“Careful there, Captain,” Mara mused, watching me enter before her gaze went to my shoulder where the Psionic Shadows still clung to me. “Those things are still clinging on you I see.”
“Yeah… At least they don’t get in the way… Did anything happen?”
“Hmm~ Not at all, Captain, everything has been quiet so far. Although I do have a question…”
She went to the console panel and tapped on it to bring up a window where I was keeping my logs.
“I have to apologise for seeing it without permission so forgive me if I was not meant to see it… But what is this?” She asked, sounding more curious than anything else.
I chuckled, “Ah, we’re doing a thing where we just keep logs of notable things that happen everyday. It’s nothing too serious, just something that we’re doing to memorialise our adventures together.”
She turned to eye the console, “Was I allowed to look at them? I found several files that I did not recognise so I thought to check them out…”
I waved my hand at her, “It’s fine. The logs are meant to be shared anyway so there’s no problem. Anyone can just go and read it whenever they and we sometimes would just gather to read back on our logs and reminisce on what happened before.”
After all… The private ones that I don’t want others reading are saved on my Codex instead so I didn’t need to worry about someone else reading it.
“I see… Do the others also write their own logs as well?” Mara asked.
I went over to her and swiped across the screen, showing her the list of logs from the other girls.
She glanced through the list quickly before turning to me, “This is… Certainly an interesting idea. Am I…”
I smiled at her, “Do you wish to contribute your own logs as well? There’s no restrictions so you can just go ahead and join in too.”
“I see. Is there a format that I have to follow?”
“Well… Not really? You can just write however you like to be honest. The whole point of it is just for our own entertainment in the first place.”
“Understood, Captain,” She nodded before her lips curled up into an amused smile. “Speaking of which, I suppose that Amber has already told you about her past?”
I nodded, “Even told me how she met up with you and then you took her in as your student or something and taught her how to use her abilities all the way to Theeve.”
She scoffed, “She gave you the summarised version I see… It wasn’t that simple, actually.”
I raised an eyebrow at her, “What do you mean?”
She crossed her arms in front of her, “It’s true that we did meet in the Inner Colonies and I decided to teach her how to control her powers a little. But we didn’t travel together all the way to Theeve. At that point of time, I was also looking to escape from my family so the both of us just so happened to be travelling in the same direction so that’s why we stuck together for a while. But we never intended to stick together all the way.”
“Eh? So what happened between the two of you?”
“Nothing. I just thought that I could help her out a little but since both of us had pursuers, neither of us wanted to get involved in the other person’s problems so we just separated once we got to the Outer Colonies. She went her own way and I went mine for a time. I believe after me, she started looking for ways to earn Credits and got involved with some unsavoury types here and there before she finally became a proper Merc.”
Ah, that’s right, I remember Amber telling me about that before…
“What happened after that?”
“Fufu~ I would like to say that there was some big event or a really big twist of fate but it really was just a coincidence that I ended up meeting Amber again. Once again, she got involved in more trouble and I just so happened to be in Theeve where she also coincidentally ended up and I had to save her again. Thinking back on it… It really is a big coincidence, huh? With such a big Galaxy and I ended up meeting that girl who escaped from a military research facility twice in two different places.”
“I guess you could say that’s the fate part at play?” I mused.
“I suppose.”
I nodded at her, “What about you, Mara? I don’t think you’ve told us your side of the journey yet. I mean, I know that you ran away from your family and everything but you ended up opening a Gene Splice Clinic to be a Gene Splicer all the way out here in the Outer Colonies. That must not have been easy.”
She sniffed, “Hmph… If I was just a normal person, then I would say that it was definitely not easy. But you forget, Tera, I am no ordinary person.”

“Ah, right. So you used your telepathy?”
“I may have come from a Noble household but I wasn’t completely lacking in common sense and I do know how the Galaxy works. That’s why I was already able to blackmail, bribe, threaten and coerce the people I came across to do what I wanted and, to be honest, my trip out into the Outer Colonies was pretty smooth sailing. The only issues I faced was the fact that I had to slow down to keep covering my tracks in case my family was pursuing me and that was a bother but aside from that, it wasn’t really that hard. If you want to know, Amber definitely had a more interesting experience while in the earlier years where she was still figuring out how to live her life. She did grow up in a lab after all so she had to learn a lot of things from scratch.”
“For example?”
“Like how I heard from her that she didn’t know people couldn’t just go out into space without a space suit at first so she had been suggesting to some of her team members to just jump out of the airlock on several occasions. Thankfully, all of them thought she was making a joke and didn’t take her suggestion seriously so she managed to get away with that without revealing she’s a Psionic.”
I raised a finger, “That reminds me… Does that mean that a Psionic could just throw themselves out into space from the moment they awakened their Psionic abilities and still stay alive despite not knowing how to use their powers?”
“Hmm… Yes and no. It’s kind of an instinct thing… You know how most living things would have the instinct to preserve their own lives? It’s the same idea. So a Psionic with good instincts might be able to subconsciously protect themselves despite not having any training. On the other hand, a lesser Psionic who either has extremely weak Psionic potential or has really bad instincts might just die instead.”
Ah… So basically you either get good or you just die?
“In that case… What did you even teach Amber?”
“I’m surprised she didn’t tell you. I really only taught her the basics. For us Psionics, we have this feeling of having another muscle in our heads which we are able to use to influence the things around us. So I simply taught her how to utilise what we might call Psionic energy to get them to do her bidding. Just so you know, she’s way better than I am at manipulating small things with precision. Which was how she managed to escape that research station of hers without tripping any alarms or even tipping anyone off. She could, for example, finely manipulate a slot machine in a casino to rig it to win a jackpot or even make a roulette ball land on a specific place of her choosing.”
I blinked at her, “Wait… Are you saying…”
“That she absolutely cheated during that time you went to the casino and helped you win all those Credits? Absolutely.”
I frowned, “Wait… But I remember her betting differently during the roulettes… And she lost…”
“Please, Captain. That girl is so infatuated with you that she’s practically just doing it so that you can win and she gets to see you win. Though if it was anyone else, I would say that this was the safest decision in order to scam the casino as in the event the casino decides to search you for cheating, they would find that you don’t have the capability to manipulate the odds of the game like that and then everyone gets to get off scot free.”
“Are you sure that wasn’t Amber’s plan from the start?”
Mara gave me a look that said that she was absolutely serious, “Definitely not.”
Well… I guess I would have to agree with her on that…
Speaking of which… I wonder if Amber has already woken up? We ended up doing so much that she passed out and I had to carry her to her room…
