Chapter 429: Can’t Bring The Meat? Take The Plants
I did a scan of the animal first with my Codex and it does seem like it’s safe.

By safe, I mean safe to eat of course.

I poked the meat that I was searing on the pan to check its consistency before flipping it over, making sure that the meat was thoroughly soaked in the sauce.

Since this was safe to eat, the next most important question was whether it tasted good.

The other girls were all waiting at the dining table while drooling at me searing the… Err… I guess I can just call this steak?

I mean… I’m cooking it like one so I guess it’s steak.

Believing the steak to be done, I took it out from the pan and cut it up into five portions to be divided up into five plates before taking them to the dining table to be served.

Since this was just a test dish for now, I decided not to make too much in case it didn’t turn out to be palatable.

The only problem is that we don’t really have a way to raise these guys quickly so even if we bring them with us, we can’t just eat them whenever we want.

And another unfortunate thing is that I don’t see any udders on them so I don’t think they produce milk either.

Unless all the ones we’ve seen so far are the males of the species, that is…

Putting that aside for now, let’s eat!

I took a slice of the meat and brought it to my mouth, the girls also following suit after I took the first bite.

The moment the meat hit my tongue, it seemed to melt and an indescribable feeling of happiness welled up from within my mouth and spread all across my body.

I shuddered from the feeling. This was way better than any of the steaks I’ve made so far!

And judging by the chorus of moans and squeals from all around the table, I think the others think the same way as well.

“Ahhhhhh!! So gooooood!! How is this so gooooood?!”

“I’m melting… This is melting in my mouth…”

“I can’t… I can’t believe I get to taste something this wonderful in my life…”

“Nyaaaa~ This tastes almost as good as fish, nyaaaa~”

Not gonna lie, that last comment by Ries was a pretty high praise in my opinion.

I went ahead to take another bite out of the steak and thoroughly enjoyed that one bite as well.

Mmmm~ I really can’t get enough of this~ It’s not too hard or too chewy, the juices coming out from the meat with every bite was just absolutely glorious.

I tried to pick up another bite of the steak but my fork hit the plate with a loud clink.

I looked down and I realised that the plate was already empty.

Huh… I’ve already finished it? It felt like I’ve only taken like two bites?

No, I definitely finished it… Because when I looked at the other girls, they were also looking down at their plates with the same look of confusion on their faces, like they couldn’t understand how the food on their plate had disappeared.

Can’t believe how good this meat tastes… Is it just because it’s fresh? Or is there something special about the animal itself?

Amber turned to me, “Hey… Tera? Would you mind if I go out and hunt some animals right now? Maybe… I’ll just bring back like a hundred of them?”

I shook my head at her, “Let’s not hunt a species to extinction ok? Maybe we can just hunt a few of them to take some of their meat along with us but not just slaughter a whole bunch of them that would then threaten their odds of survival.”

“Oh come on! A few hundred of them wouldn’t hurt!”

“It might not, but I don’t think you would just be stopping at a few hundred after you get there, would you? You might even want to just take a few more after eating their meat again.”

“Uggh… I guess I might…” Amber trailed off.

Mmhmm… And that’s how overhunting happens. Let’s try not to ruin a world’s ecosystem just after arriving on it for the first time, ok?

Lea turned to me, “What about just bringing some of them on board, Mistress? It seems like they feed off the grass around here so we can just take some back to cultivate them and then we should be able to rear them on our own.”

“And how long would it take for them to grow to adulthood for us to butcher them? And do we even know their mating habits? Is the effort, time and Credits to grow them worth it?”

Amber looked back at her empty plate, “I mean… If you were to ask me that question right now, I would have to say yes to the last part…”

I raised an eyebrow at her, “Even if it will take several years for them to grow and you aren’t able to touch them until they are fully grown? Would you be able to hold yourself back?”

Amber turned to Lea, “Ok, I changed my mind… There’s no way I would be able to hold back… Putting them in front of me is just going to be torture…”

Mmhmm… That’s what I thought too.

I turned to the girls, “We can just take this as a delicacy that we can enjoy very rarely. It’s not like we can’t come back here anymore, right? We’ll just hunt a couple of them and take their meat with us which I will cook for us occasionally. Then if we are in the area, we can just come back and hunt for more of them before leaving. Of course, we have to make sure that our hunt is sustainable for their continued existence so I’m not going to accept any suggestions like returning here every other day just to get their meat.”

By the look of disappointment on a few of their faces, it seems like they actually thought about suggesting that.

Mara spoke up right then, “What about the plants, Captain? Were there any plants that were edible that could be grown on the ship?”

I turned to Lea since she was the one who had been in charge of that during our excursion.

Yes, we did take a look around the area after we had our little session outside the ship… She had gathered a few of them to bring back to test them but I haven’t had the chance to try cooking them yet.

The Alv paused for a moment to think, “I’ve tested a few of them by using my power to make them grow and while it seems like most of them could potentially be cultivated, they don’t really taste the same and aren’t really that great if we compare it to this steak. But if Tera were to cook them, it might turn out differently? The good news is that they are all safe to eat though.”

All eyes turned to me and I shrugged, “I could try it out but since I’m not familiar with those plants, it might take me a while to do some experimenting to get them to taste good.”

Amber quickly leapt up to her feet, “Alright! So if the animals are a no go, then let’s go and get the plants instead! Surely if the animal tastes that good, the plants must also taste good as well right! Let’s go gather more of them!”

Err… I’d like to say that that isn’t how it works but the girls all got fired up and agreed with Amber to go gather even more plants outside the ship while I work on experimenting with them in the kitchen.

And before I could stop them, they had already riled themselves up and left the kitchen, all of them fully intent on going out to gather even more plants for Lea to grow.

Err… I guess that’s what I’m stuck with then…

I made my own way to the hydroponics room to see what plants Lea had gathered from our short time outside.

I have to say that most of them that she took back were quite alien to me and I didn’t really see anything aside from leaves when she plucked them out from the plants she was gathering from… So I don’t know if I would be dealing with vegetables, nuts or fruits.

When I got there, I could see that there was one part of the hydroponics garden she had set aside to test them since it was a whole mess of different plants growing in that plot instead of the organised form that the others were being grown in.

Then I noticed that there were some bulbous shaped objects hanging off some of them.

Wait… Are those fruits?

I took one off of a plant and bit into it, not really worried about poisoning myself since Lea had already said that they were all safe to eat.

I chewed on it and then I paused.

Isn’t this… The taste of an apple?!

Oh my god! I can make desserts with this!!
