Chapter 434: Picking Up A Job On The Way
We only rented that place for a few hours so it wasn’t surprising that we did not sell everything.
But it was still surprising that we managed to sell almost everything that we brought here with us.
Our next goal was to find an escort job that would bring us closer to our destination.
Honestly, if this station had some kind of entertainment amenities, I might be tempted to stay here for a day or two before heading out. But there’s literally nothing here for outsiders so I wanted to leave here as quickly as possible.
Heck, when I went to check my Codex to look for Mercenary work, pretty much all of them were escort jobs out of the system.
I tried to look for the highest paying one and found one easily enough, which I felt was rather odd that it wasn’t really that popular since there’s a limit to the number of applicants they were accepting and the number counter wasn’t even halfway filled.
Then I realised that the destination of the escort was much further than the other escort missions and it specifically stated that we will only be paid if we escort them to the destination itself.
That’s bad news for those who were planning to just tag along with them for an easy job just because their destination was located along the escort path.
Good news for us, the destination of the escort mission was relatively close to our target system so we can just head there after this escort job.
Apparently they are going to this station called Tavra Research Station within the Tavra system, which is at the very edge of the chain of systems connected by Warp Gates.
Once we reach there, we just need to turn back and do two jumps to the Shufu system, our destination for this little trip of ours in finding that pirate leader.
“What do you think about taking this one?” I asked, showing Amber and Lea the job.
Amber peered over my shoulder to look at my Codex, “Oh, that system huh? I’ve almost completely forgotten that place exists.”
“What kind of place is it?”
“There’s a spatial anomaly over there which was reported all over the news when it appeared. A miniature black hole appeared there but somehow, it wasn’t pulling anything into itself. In fact, anything that tries to approach it will be forced to orbit a set distance around it instead. No matter how hard one tries to launch themselves into the black hole, they will just be repelled away.”
Lea nodded, “I heard about that too. There’s a Research Station that was constructed there just to study that anomaly and various different races were involved in the research too.”
“Huh… I’m guessing our client might also be a researcher heading there then?” I asked.
“That might be the case, Mistress. So would we be taking that job?”
“I guess, why not, right? They’re even paying us twenty thousand Credits per day just for escorting them and we get to loot any hostile ships we might meet along the way. Those are good terms, right?”
Amber made a face, “It’s decent I suppose… Only if we don’t actually encounter combat though, since they aren’t paying us extra for our expenditures for any battles we might encounter. So in order to maximise our profits, we have to avoid combat as much as possible.”
“Don’t we get to loot the enemies we defeat?”
“Yes, except that you would have to compete with the other escorts to get the kills since the right to loot is still decided by who gets the kill.”
Sheesh, that means you would be competing with your fellow escorts in order to make a profit.
Well… I guess some profit is better than no profit… And also the fact that we literally have something that is spitting out free money on my finger so it’s fine even if we don’t maximise our profits for this job.
The only issue is that we have yet to find a buyer for the Psionic Crystals yet.
Wait…
“Hey, do you think the Research Station would be willing to buy the Psionic Crystals from us?” I asked.
Amber paused for a moment to think, “I… Don’t think they would since they shouldn’t need those for research… But I guess we can try?”
Well, that decides it then, we’re also gonna go there and make some money~ No reason why we shouldn’t take advantage of any opportunity to earn more Credits, right?
“I guess we’ll just go there and ask. All in favour?”

“Of course, Mistress.”
“I don’t see why not?”
Alright then~
I tapped on the button to apply for the job and I quickly received another notification stating that I was accepted for the job.
Guess they weren’t even going to screen the people who apply for it.
Another notification arrived soon after, stating that the plan was to leave in a few hours time and for everyone to gather at the specific set of coordinates outside of the station.
I quickly sent a message to Mara and Ries to let them know about the new arrangement before setting off to the hangar to return to our ship.
The hangar was still just as crowded as it was before with new ships coming in and leaving every few minutes.
I could see the various staff members running around taking orders from the ship captains before the energy cells were diverted to those ships.
There was nothing else for us here so we boarded our ship and took off from the landing pad.
Checking the map as we approached our ship, I realised that there were already quite a few ships gathered at the rendezvous spot for the escort job.
Seems like they’re really eager for some reason… Guess we might as well just join them even though there was still time before the supposed departure time.
I manoeuvred the ship back into the Iridescence’s hangar, docking my Verlandi and powering down the engines.
“Welcome back, Captain,” Mara’s voice came from the ship’s speakers. “There’s some matters I would like to discuss with you if you are available.”
I turned to raise an eyebrow at Lea and Amber who had just stepped out of the ship after me.
Both of them also had a curious look on their faces but they gestured for me to go ahead.
Wondering what our ship doctor might need, I went to the bridge while Lea and Amber helped with transporting the remainder of our unsold loot back into the cargo hold.
Even though I say that, Amber was just lifting all of them up with her telekinesis to transport them out of the ship.
As I said, Psionics are such cheats…
When I reached the bridge, I found Mara seated at her usual spot alone, her personal terminal placed in front of her with the screen displaying the details of the job that I just took for us.
“You wanted to talk to me?” I asked.
She nodded, “I just thought that you might want to know something about this job, Captain. The Research Station we are heading to has ties with my family. They have had an interest in that black hole as well, believing that it could be a way for them to gain more power somehow, either by harnessing the energy of the black hole or hoping that a child born near one would somehow gain powers related to them.”
I blinked at her, “Wait… So in that case… I guess we shouldn’t take it then?”
“Oh no, on the contrary, we should be going there because they would definitely want to buy any Psionic Crystals we have for any price we name. That thought just came to mind when you sent the message so I thought that we could stop over at the Research Station instead of just leaving immediately after completing the escort.”
And to think I was just wondering about that when I was still deciding whether to take the job or not.
“But… Wouldn’t your family realise that you are there?” I asked.
“Hmph… They wouldn’t travel all the way out here themselves, Captain. Those people who are in the station are merely just workers that they hired to research that black hole.”
“Hmm… But wouldn’t selling those Psionic Crystals to them strengthen them or something? That wouldn’t be beneficial to you, right?”
Her lips then curled up into a mischievous smile, “Under ideal circumstances, where the family is completely harmonious and there is no backstabbing or even competition involved, the Psionic Crystals would be shared equally amongst everyone so that everyone can improve together.”
She then placed a finger on her lips, “But if the members of that family are always trying to compete with each other and such a large cache of Psionic Crystals is dropped right in front of them… There is definitely going to be some infighting just to get their hands on it~ And if they are too busy fighting amongst themselves to get some Psionic Crystals, they might just have no time to search for a member of their family that ran away from home~”
Right… I forget that Mara can sometimes be really devious if she wants to.
That is so hot.
