Chapter 436: This Is Our Mechanic
So… Just saying… The generator exploded.
Don’t worry, it sounds worse than it actually was.
When Ries started up the generator, it hummed for several seconds before the sound got increasingly louder to a rather concerning degree.
The frown on Ries’s face already told me that wasn’t supposed to happen.
Right as I was about to suggest that it might be a good idea for her to stop the generator, a loud ‘bang’ came from the machine and one of the pipes blew open before spewing out a gout of flame.
Seems like Ries had already anticipated that something like that would happen which was why she had Amber weld the protective cover in front of it first so no one was hurt.
The fire problem was also solved immediately thanks to Amber as she simply reached out her palm and squeezed it into a fist, extinguishing the fire just like that.
She then helped Ries cut open the metal cover with another flame from her finger, my blonde haired lover giving me a wink once she was done.
Ries immediately started inspecting the machine, prompting several holographic screens to pop up around the generator as she eyed it.
“Oh… I forgot to account for the increased energy from the fusion reaction…” She muttered, taking a step back to materialise the screen with all the numbers again.
I watched her swipe her hand across to erase several of the equations before typing in a bunch of new numbers as she started to do another round of calculations right there.
Equations that I’ve never seen before flew across the screen in record time before Ries paused at the final number that showed five hundred and twenty five with several decimals after that.
Just saying… I didn’t see her use a calculator at all. She really did all of the calculations mentally…
“Oh wow… Ok… I’m glad I actually decided to fuse an even stronger frame for the core now… Otherwise that entire thing would have blown up instead of just the coolant pipes…” Ries muttered, staring at the number.
I’m guessing that means the generator was now giving an output that was five times more than normal while she had initially only thought that it would only be two times more.
“That’s a pretty big blunder, don’t you think?” Amber pointed out from my side.
Ries bit her thumb, “Unnn… I have no defense for that. I really failed in that one… If I hadn’t thought to reinforce the frame for the power core because I had extra materials, the entire generator might have blown up and became completely useless. Even though we still have spares, wasting it like that would definitely not sit well with me…”
Amber tilted her head, “Hmm? You’re saying that even with that, it wouldn’t blow up the ship or something?”
Res turned to her, “Eh? Of course not. Look, look~”
She went to the side and pushed a button near the wall, prompting a translucent dome to form around the area where she was working on the power armour.
“We got some personal shields as loot, right? I went ahead to repurpose them into a static shield to prevent any explosion that might happen in there from affecting the rest of the ship. So even if that thing had a total power core collapse and exploded, you’ll probably just feel a little tremor but that’s about it.”
Amber blinked at her, “Wait… You stripped down the personal shields and combined them all to make it into a static shield?”
“Mmhmm~ Just linked several of them together and made them work in unison to generate that shield. Only downside is that it can’t be moved but that’s ok~”
Amber leaned over to me and whispered, “Just saying… It’s common knowledge that you can’t use multiple shields at the same time unless it’s specifically designed to do so… It should have been impossible for her to get all those shield generators to work together and not fizzle out…”
Ries seemed to have heard her because she turned around and puffed up her chest in pride, “Ehehehe~ I figured out how to do it by changing the frequency of each of the shield generators so that they mesh together like a lattice instead of letting them occupy the same space and cancelling each other out~”
I have no idea how hard it is to do that and Amber doesn’t seem to know either but I figured it should be pretty difficult considering the fact that the common knowledge still remained that you can’t use them all together.
The Maochatte then added, “Although… I still can’t get it to work on mobile shields since the frequence will need to be constantly changing and I haven’t figured out a way to do that yet.”
I tilted my head at her, “Is that difficult?”
Unexpectedly, Ries turned around and hopped up close to me with an excited look on her face, “Ohhh!! You see, Boss! For the shields to work together, they project individual energy ‘plates’ into the air to form the energy wall that you know~ But when two shields are projected into the same space, they will cancel each other out and not work! So in order for two shields to work together, I just needed to program each of the plates to change a little bit of the frequency that they are being projected at so that the energy ‘plates’ don’t occupy the exact same space as the others and thus, would not cancel each other out! It’s like giving each of them a different set of coordinates on a map so that they don’t occupy the same space!”
Ok… I think I kind of get the idea… But I have a feeling that she’s really oversimplifying it or something.

“So what’s wrong with the mobile version?” I asked.
She giggled, “Ehehehe~ I had to find each individual space in the air that each of the plates would be projected and individually code each of the frequency to make sure they don’t overlap~ If you wear it as a personal shield, you would be moving around and then the frequency would be different, wouldn’t it? Unless I can figure out a way for the shield to auto update the frequency by itself, they would start cancelling each other out the moment you move~”
Ah… Ok, I get it.
But now I have another question…
“Why not just use an AI to calculate then?” I pointed out.
She paused and blinked at me, “Eh?”
I shrugged, “I mean… AI can do that right? If you already calculated the frequency or whatever for each shield, then you can just get AI to calculate what needs to be changed whenever it is moved? I don’t know if that’s possible.”
She opened her mouth, then closed it, then opened it again before closing it one more time.
Ries then looked down and started mumbling, “Putting an AI in a personal shield? That… No one has done so… Because there was no point… But if I set the frequency in relation to the object… Then save it as a variable and then add in a function to move… No… Normal AI would not… Wait… If I use a specialised one where the function is to specifically calculate these numbers… That… Might be possible?”
She’s actually giving off quite a serious look right now and Amber was even giving me a concerned look.
Without warning, she suddenly ran over to the power armour once again and started typing on the screen furiously, her fingers literally flying across the digital keyboard in a blur.
“I’m sorry you two! But I’ll have to put this project on hold for now! I need to do this before I forget about it!” She cried out, still typing away on the keyboard without looking in our direction.
Huh… I guess that’s it for today?
Amber stretched the arm overhead and shrugged, “Oh that happens sometimes. I might be asked to help her with welding something and the next movement she seems to get some idea and then she gets engrossed in working on it and might even totally forget that I was there. She’ll probably be stuck with it for the rest of the day so we can just leave now.”
Err… Ok?
Amber took me by the hand and led me out of the room, leaving Ries who was still hunched over the console and typing away, the Maochatte not even reacting to our departure.
The moment the door shut behind me, Amber turned and gave me a sultry smile.
“Soo… Since we’re suddenly free… Wanna go and have a bath with me, Tera?”
“It’s still early… And I need to go make dinner for everyone soon…”
“Oh alright… Then how about I suck you off while you make dinner? I want some honey as a before dinner snack~”
“Do you really want that as a snack?”
“Eheheh~ I just wanna suck you off~ The honey is a bonus~”
…
