Chapter 439: They’re Here Again
I got shaken out of my nap and I woke up with a start.
“Mmm~ Mistress… Harder…” Lea moaned, shuffling herself closer against me.
Huh… What did I get woken up by?
I thought someone was shaking me awake but that was clearly not the case…
I sat up on the bed and was just in the midst of reaching for my Codex when the ship shook again.
Sensing something wrong, I immediately pulled myself out of Lea’s embrace to slide out of bed, waking my Alv up in the process.
“Mis… Mistress?”
I slid into my pants and answered without looking back, “Something’s wrong. Head to the bridge.”
She didn’t question it and immediately jumped out of bed before running out of the room, still completely naked.
I quickly put on my suit as well before dashing out through the door, not bothering to put on my boots this time.
The sound of my bare feet tapping on the ground echoed around the hall as I ran for the bridge.
I squeezed past the door before it opened fully and ran onto the bridge, just in time to see the main cannon in front of our bridge fire a shot.
“Captain on the bridge!” Amber called out from the map console.
Lea was already at the weapons console while Mara was on the communications console and Ries in the pilot seat.
I rushed to the Captain’s seat, “What’s going on?”
“Another ambush, Tera,” Amber answered, sliding her hand over the map console to prompt a screen to appear in front of me.
I eyed the map and grimaced when I saw the positions of the enemy ships.
We were completely surrounded.
And from the map scans, there were now eight C Class ships, twenty B Class and thirty A Class ships.
I could also see that five of those C Class ships were the ones that we had let escape earlier so this wasn’t like a new group of pirates but rather, the exact same group instead.
How the heck did they catch up to us so quickly?
And seriously Amber, you should have just called me…
Looking at the corner of my screen, I saw that there was already a call connected but currently had its volume muted so I went ahead to unmute it.
“That fucking idiot client!! Isn’t this what we said would happen?!”
“They’re more prepared this time!! Shit! EMP! EMP! Evade! Evade!”
“We have to break through the encirclement! Look for the weakest part!”
“They have six C Class ships in the encirclement! If we can take down two of them we can break through!! Quickly!”
I looked at the map to see that they had intentionally placed more ships in the direction of our destination which would make it harder for us to break through in that direction.
Conversely, the area behind us only had a C class ship and a smaller number of escorts accompanying it which would have made that the weakest section.
That meant that it should be the best place for us to punch through but… For some reason, something was telling me that I should not be going in that direction.

Instead, I checked the map again to see that in the direction to our right, there was a C Class Corvette and a C Class Medium Gunboat that was being accompanied by a smattering of B and A Class ships.
“To the right! Clear a path to the right!!” I shouted into the comms.
Another Merc growled through the comms, “Are you an idiot?! The back! There’s less ships there! We can just break through them and then circle around again to continue towards our destination!”
“No! It’s a trap! Do not go from there!” I shouted through the comms.
There was a short moment of silence before a laugh came from the other side, “Come on! They already brought so many of their own, why would they still put a trap there! Everyone, follow me!”
“No! We’ll break through from the side! Come on!”
The Mercs seemed to be split on who to follow when the client’s voice came from the call, “We are not turning back! Listen to her and go right! Punch through there!”
“Fuck that! We’re not continuing with this job anymore! You’re just sending us to our deaths!! I’m out of here!!”
One of the C Class Gunboats peeled away from our formation to start attacking the pirates at the rear.
A single B Class Heavy Fighter and two A Class fighters also turned to join him.
The pirates seemed to panic at the sight of the Mercs rushing at them and even started to retreat, as though they weren’t expecting any of us to attack them.
On the other hand, the others rallied around me and started charging towards the right while shooting at the pirates that were in our way.
The other pirates were already trying to rush towards us in order to rescue their comrades but we pressed onwards, staying just ahead of them and out of their weapon range.
“Large ships, focus fire on the Corvette!” I instructed.
Between the two ships, the Corvette was the bigger threat since it had longer ranged weapons than the Gunboat, the latter having been designed to combat smaller ships instead of larger ships or in the same class.
I was worried that no one would listen to me but surprisingly, they all obeyed and a hail of bullets flew towards the larger ship.
Unfortunately for us, the Corvette’s shield held out especially since from our angle, we could only use two of our main guns to fire at it.
They also returned fire and two B Class Heavy Fighters and two A Class Fighters who were unfortunate enough to be in the way were shot down, their ships exploding and flying off into space.
Fuck… We’ve already lost four escorts.
“Ries! Turn off the Inertia Drives and face the broadside to them!”
She did as I asked without question and our side thrusters started turning our ship while maintaining our direction of travel.
Now, with all of our main guns brought to bear against the Corvette, I gave the order to fire again.
Lea needed no further encouragement before firing all of our main guns at the Corvette.
The shield only managed to hold on for a second after both high intensity lasers struck it before it shattered, leaving the ship vulnerable for our railgun rounds to pierce through its armour and hull before exiting the other side.
The ship listed to the side before one of its engines exploded, sending it flying off uncontrollably to the side.
Realising that we might actually have a chance to break through, the Mercs redoubled their efforts and started shooting at the Medium Gunboat.
Unfortunately, their escorts started to swarm us as several A and B Class ships broke away from the Gunboat to attack us.
“Fighters, focus on holding them off! Everyone else target the Gunboat!” I ordered.
Lea immediately fired another salvo at the Gunboat, all of her shots finding their mark and shattering the shield of the larger ship.
The Corvette on our side then fired their laser which struck the side of the Gunboat, burning a hole through the hull and separating the ship into two.
With the final C Class ship destroyed, we just needed to deal with the smaller ships now which wasn’t that big of an issue since we are also focused on clearing them out for our fighters.
The coast was now clear and we managed to break out of the encirclement right as our Travel Drives came back online.
I turned my attention to the group of Mercs that decided to escape through the back and found them chasing after the pirates that were keeping just out of range of them.
Because of that, the encirclement was also broken and there was a space for those Mercs to start flying towards to escape.
But right as they were turning towards that gap, alarms started blaring from my screen announcing the imminent arrival of a large sized ship.
Not even a second passed before a large ship shot in front of the Merc group, revealing itself to be a D Class Destroyer and completely blocking their escape path.
The Mercs didn’t even get a chance to turn away before the turrets on the Destroyer fired and blew all of the Mercenary ships to pieces.
Damn… So I was right that there was a trap after all.
I don’t think those guys even got a chance to regret their decision…
“Come on! Charge up those Travel Drives! We’re getting out of here!” The client ordered, already firing up their own Travel Drive.
The rest of us obeyed, hoping that this was the final surprise they had as we boosted off into the darkness of space, leaving the pirates behind.
Surprisingly, they didn’t try to chase after us so I assume that they were satisfied with looting the remains of those Merc ships instead of taking another risk where they might suffer more losses.
Ugh… And here I thought the number of ships we had would stop us from getting attacked by pirates…
