- Chapter 440 - Chapter 440: These Guys Are Persistent
Chapter 440: These Guys Are Persistent
With the reduced number of ships, we really needed to avoid combat as much as possible now.
The good thing was that we had fewer ships so it was harder for people to spot us.
I leaned back in my chair and let out a sigh, “Do you think they’ll still come after us?”
Amber looked up from her map console, “Oh, no doubt about it. They’re definitely not done with us. They definitely let us go because they know they can catch up to us easily. And if they were to just search the wreckage of the ships they just destroyed, they could probably get the scans of their computers to figure out where we were going and just wait somewhere.”
“Why are these pirates so persistent?”
Mara turned to me, “I do not think they are pirates, Captain.”
I raised an eyebrow at her, “Not pirates? Then why are they attacking us? They can’t be doing it for fun, can they?”
She shook her head, “That’s not it, Captain. I believe they are probably thugs or other Mercs that were hired by a rival Nobel Family to try and kidnap whoever our client is transporting, either to get ransom or information from them. They’re just pretending to be pirates right now.”
“What’s the point though?”
“So that they can deny any involvement in this of course. And my family would not know who to retaliate against.”
“Great… So that means we’re caught up in some noble politics aren’t we?”
Mara nodded, “That’s what happens when one gets involved with Noble Families, Captain.”
I grinned at her, “So should I be worried that I got involved with you?”
“Ah… I’m really sorry for that. If you wish, I can leave whenever you want, Captain. That should at least keep their attention away from you should it ever come to that.”
I held up my hand, “Wait, wait. I was just joking. And besides…”
I got up from my seat to move in front of Mara, surprising her by lifting up her chin with a finger so that I could look her in the eyes.
“You are worth it~”
Before she could say anything, I leaned in and kissed her on the lips.
She moaned into the kiss and I could feel her shudder under me.
Before it could get too steamy, I pulled away, my tongue darting out to lick my lips.
Mara needed another second before she recovered, her lips curling up into a sensual smile.
“You really know how to push our buttons, Captain~”
Her eyes then glanced to the side and I saw that the other girls were also looking at me with pursed lips.
Alright then… I went ahead to give all of them a kiss each before returning to my seat.
They obviously wanted more but I reminded them that there was a possibility of the pirates attacking us at any time right now and I’d rather not get caught with our pants down… Literally.
In fact, I’m still barefoot at the moment and I’m not even going to risk going back to get my boots just in case.
It felt a little weird to be there without any shoes but oh well.
“You’re not going to wear your heels, Mistress?” Lea asked, her eyes locked on my feet.
I flexed my toes and shrugged, “I’m worried that they show up right as I leave.”
Amber giggled, “Ehehe~ I don’t think they have the capacity for that many Interdiction blasts in such a short time.”

Mara disagreed, “If I know anything about how Noble Families operate, they’re not going to give up that easily. I suspect they have another trap prepared because of the fact that they let us go instead of chasing after us.”
Ries turned around from where she sat, “Just how much resources did they pour into this? Losing those ships must not have been cheap…”
“Money is not an issue to people like them. As long as they want something done, they expect it to be done.”
I guess that’s not really surprising.
Amber scratched her cheek, “But still… It’s going to at least take some time for them to do anything right? We’ve already–”
Before Amber could even finish her words, our ship suddenly dropped out of Travel speeds again, the sudden stop almost throwing me forward.
“Again?!” One of the Mercs cried out through the comms.
“I want to go home already!”
“I’m not paid enough for this shit!”
I turned to Amber, “Initiate wide area scan now! We need to know where they’re coming from!”
“Wide area scan charging, Tera!”
“Fire it as soon as it’s ready! Lea! Power up the weapons and do a sweep of the area!”
“On it, Mistress.”
Amber initiated the wide area scan like I asked and I immediately brought up the map screen to watch it for any signs of hostiles.
I thought that I would see the edge of the map fill up with red dots but… The scans showed nothing.
“Amber?” I asked, turning back to look at her.
She also had a confused look on her face, “There’s… Nothing wrong with the scans, Tera… There’s really nothing detected…”
I frowned, “That can’t be possible… there’s no such thing as a natural interdiction blast right? Or is there some kind of phenomenon that might make ships drop out of Travel speeds?”
Amber hesitated for a moment, “There… Are some cases where that happens but…”
“But this was definitely an interdiction blast, Boss,” Ries finished for her.
“And yet, our scans showed no ships in this sector? Are they using some kind of stealth module?” I asked.
“It could be possible as well… But for a stealth ship to remain cloaked, they would need to move at a slower speed or else they will show up in our scanners from their engines… By the time they reach us, our Travel Drives will have already recharged and we’ll be off again… There’s no point for this I think…”
“I’ll relay that possibility to the others. Lea, keep an eye out for any signs of enemy ships.”
She gave me a nod before going back to look at the screens on her console, my Alv making use of the gun sights to scan the area for any enemies.
I went ahead to tell the others that there might be stealth ships around and the Mercs all took my warnings quite seriously. Probably because I stopped them from getting blown up in the trap that the bandits had laid in the earlier ambush.
The client’s voice then came over the comms, sounding quite irritated.
“Once the Travel Drives are back online, we’ll continue our journey immediately, understood? We’ve wasted enough time as it is.”
There was no reason to go against that so everyone answered affirmatively.
Everything was silent as we all waited for our Travel Drives to reboot.
But right as we thought that there was indeed nothing, my map suddenly let out a warning beep indicating that a hostile ship had been detected.
When I turned towards the map, I realised that the red dot was already relatively close to us and was speeding towards the client’s ship.
Just as I looked out the window, a small sized ship, which I’m guessing to be B Class at most, flew past us at blinding speeds.
I did, however, notice that the ship looked like a spike in shape like a stake.
“Lea?!” I shouted.
My Alv frowned, “If I were to shoot… I will hit the client, Mistress…”
Fuck!
I watched as the ship hurtled past all the other ships before crashing right into the side of the C Class Corvette.
I thought that the ship might explode but it ended up just staying there, stuck to the side of the Corvette like it was some art installation.
Ries let out a gasp, “That’s a boarding craft! Those ships are designed to smash into enemy ships and release a boarding party into the ship itself!”
Oh shit… Doesn’t that mean our client is in trouble right now?
And if they get killed… We wouldn’t get paid!!
I did a quick scan of the Corvette and I realised that the airlock hatch was located near the top of the Corvette and still untouched.
I immediately stood up from the Captain’s seat, “We’re going to board them as well! Amber, Mara, can I count on the two of you to follow me? We’ll use the Verlandi to board them!”
Ries turned back to me, “What about me, Boss?”
“You and Lea stay here just in case more enemies show up! I’m leaving the ship in your care!”
“Yes, Boss!” She saluted cutely.
Amber and Mara quickly got up to follow me until Amber pointed at my feet, “Are you not going to dress yourself, Tera?”
Ahhhhh fuck! I forgot about that! I need to go back to my room to get my stuff first!
Ugghh… I literally took this job because I thought it would just be an uneventful escort job that paid good money…
Why the hell are there so many troubles?!
