Chapter 443: Are You Paying Us For The Rescue?
I stood over the corpses of those armoured men while I reloaded my shotgun of the shells I spent on this encounter.
The captain of the ship walked up to me while still holding the two laser rifles in his hands.
“So, are you one of the Mercs that came to help?”
I raised an eyebrow at him, “Or else what can I be? A stowaway on your ship that just decided to pop out and help you guys?”
He narrowed his eyes at me, “Are you?”
Does this guy not understand sarcasm or something?
“No, I am the Merc that requested to dock on your ship earlier”
“Ah… The one who distracted me and allowed them to storm into our bridge. Yes, I remember you.”
What the fuck?
I looked at his crew members and they were all intentionally avoiding my gaze.
I guess even they knew their captain was an ass.
Amber came up beside me and growled at him, “One of your crew members just died and there’s nothing else for you to say?”
He puffed up his chest, “It is an honour for someone to die for the noble family. If it wasn’t because of the fact that I was given a mission to fulfill, I would have gladly given up my life in his place.”
Ok, I understand now, we’re dealing with a fanatic here… Or just someone so indoctrinated that he’s no longer able to think for himself.
Ugh… Ok, the less I need to interact with him the better.
“So is the ship secure or are there still enemies on board?” I asked.
As if he had just remembered something, he let out a curse before stomping his foot.
“Blast it! They separated into multiple groups to search for them! They’re hiding in the bunker room right now but if they find it, they will know they’re there!”
“Well… We secured the ship they used to board your ship if that helps? They shouldn’t be able to escape without getting through us,” I informed him.
He turned to glare at me, “And what are you going to do if they hold them hostage and demand we let them leave?”
Mara joined my side, “Then we just don’t give in to their demands? They’re here to capture them, not kill them. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a need for them to board the ship and search for them, they could just blow the entire ship up instead of searching for them.”
The captain turned his glare on her, “This isn’t just about that. For me to even fail at guarding them and allow them to be taken is a great dishonour for me! We have to stop them!”
Right…
I gave him a knowing look, “Are we paid extra for this?”
His face changed and I could tell that he was offended that I could even suggest such a thing.
“You’re still thinking about Credits at this time?! This is why Outer Colony thugs are so… Argghh!! How much do you want?!”
Oh? He actually agreed? I thought for sure he would just tell me to shut up and go save them or we won’t get any pay at all.
I guess making sure that his charge is safe mattered more than trying to save Credits.
I looked at Mara and she immediately answered for me, probably because she already read his mind to know what is a safe amount to ask for.
“We’re very reasonable people. Fifty thousand Credits per intruder killed and you have to pay us for the ones we have killed before as well.”

Oh wow… If we count all the ones we have killed so far and leave out the one that the captain killed himself… He now owes us six hundred thousand Credits.
The only problem is that I don’t even know whether he is aware of that.
He paused and his brows furrowed, “The main priority is to ensure the safety of the researchers… If a single one of them is hurt, then you get nothing. Do we have a deal?”
Sounds reasonable enough.
I nodded at him, “We have a deal then.”
“Then hurry up and go before they find them or worse, break into the bunker! Here, I’m sending the map of the ship to your personal terminal! Quickly!”
Oh now he’s rushing us huh?
Whatever, at least we’re getting paid for this…
We turned and left the bridge without bothering to ask if he was planning to follow us and it was evident that he was not since he stayed put.
“How are we going to prove how many people we killed though?” I asked as we got out of earshot.
Mara smiled at me, “Don’t worry Captain. Once we rescue those people that he is transporting, he’ll accept any plausible number we give him. But of course, if Captain prefers, I can help keep track of the number of people we killed.”
I nodded at her to indicate that she should do just that.
I followed the map he gave me and turned right at the T-junction that we first walked past, going the opposite way of where we had come from.
We didn’t even get very far before we heard more gunshots.
I ran towards the source of the sound, not because of a desire to save whoever was being shot at but more because of wanting to claim the bounty we have on these guys.
When we got there, we found two of those armoured guys shooting at a box with their rifles while slowly approaching it.
I jumped in immediately, shooting my shotgun two times in quick succession at the back of one of their heads.
My shield buster rounds quickly shattered his shield, the guy only realising that he was under attack after that fact.
He tried to spin around to attack me but I had already fired my slug round at his chest, punching a hole in his chest plate and piercing through his left chest.
Surprisingly, Amber did not shoot from a distance but instead opted to close the distance between her and the target.
She jumped up right as the guy turned around before she grabbed onto the guy’s shoulder to spin herself around the guy’s neck, her thighs clamping down on his neck.
The armoured guy tried to pull her down but she went ahead to push his head forward before placing the muzzle of her pistol at the back of his neck.
Without a moment’s hesitation, she pulled the trigger and there was the sound of flesh being blown apart as Amber blast opened his neck.
She leapt off the corpse before it could hit the ground, even doing a flip midair to land on her feet.
A face then appeared from behind the box, revealing it to be a guy that wasn’t dressed in one of those armour.
“Are you part of the crew?” He asked first before I could.
I shook my head, “Mercs that came here to help them.”
“Oh cool, me too. Thanks for the assist by the way. Those armour of theirs is tough… No matter how I shot them, their shields wouldn’t break…”
I nodded, “Yeah, you really need to overwhelm it with concentrated fire if you don’t have specialised equipment.”
He opened his mouth to respond but a shot suddenly rang out and a laser pierced through his head, killing him instantly.
What the fuck!
I dove into cover before another hail of bullets followed suit, all of them being shot from another armoured guy that had appeared at the doorway ahead of us.
Amber immediately reached out her hand to point her palm at the armoured guy, causing him to suddenly freeze up.
She then swung her hand in an arc and the guy got flung towards the wall, smashing him into it hard enough to leave an imprint on the wall.
“Wait!” I called out, stopping Amber from killing him via crushing.
Amber gave me a quizzical look but I simply went up to the armoured guy while he was still face planted in the wall, reloading my shotgun and changing the next few shots to be slug rounds.
I then pressed the muzzle of my shotgun against the guy’s back and fired once, bypassing his shield and blowing both his back open.
Not done yet, I placed it at the back of his head next and pulled the trigger again, this time blasting open his head.
For the final one, I placed it at his waist and fired one more time, blowing his lower half apart.
I stepped back and Amber released her hold on him, letting his corpse drop on the ground to reveal my shotgun blast had blown blood all over the parts of the wall that had caved in from the impact.
Ok… At least it doesn’t look like someone was just smashed into it but more like this guy got blown into it with the shells’ impact causing the indentation instead.
My gaze turned to the dead Merc that was unfortunate enough to be shot from the back of his head.
Poor guy… Although I guess he doesn’t need his Credit Chips anymore… I’ll mark him for later looting~
