Chapter 444: Looking For Their Client
We had been following the map for a while without finding anyone until we heard more sounds of gunfire coming from up ahead, making us choose to abandon stealth and rush towards the source instead.
We quickly came to what looked like a mess hall where the tables had been overturned to be used as improvised cover and there were currently three groups of people engaged in the fire fight.
On the left most side of the mess hall were a group of people wearing uniforms shooting at the centre group with laser weapons.
On the right most side of the mess hall were people who were clearly Mercs dressed in various different outfits and sporting different mods shooting at the centre group with different weapons.
Then the centre group was, of course, the armoured intruders.
Despite the armoured guys being outnumbered two to one, they were still holding their ground and not letting any of them get close.
I also noticed that the map showed we should be going through the centre most exit on the other side of where we were… Which meant that these armoured guys were currently blocking us from reaching there.
Guess we’ll have to be the fourth group that joins this fight.
I pressed myself against the doorframe and checked that my shotgun was fully loaded before nodding at the other two on the other side of the doorframe.
They gave me a nod in return and we peeked out at the same time and started firing at the armoured guys that were in the centre of the room.
The two shield buster rounds I fired quickly broke the shields of one of the armoured guys and Mara and Amber concentrated their shots on him.
Unfortunately, the guy reacted quickly and ducked back into cover, his armour deflecting away the shots and protecting him from being killed.
The others in the centre quickly realised there was another group of hostiles and two of them turned their weapons to start firing in our direction.
Despite having shields ourselves, I believe their shields were much better than ours so there was no way we could just sit there and trade shots since we would definitely lose.
But now, we’re effectively pinned as well and despite us taking two potential attackers away from the other two groups, they were still pinned down because they did not have anything that could take down their shields quickly.
Even if they were to try and focus on a single target to bring down their shield, all that guy had to do was to take cover and wait for their shield to recharge.
Great… Now we’re stuck here, aren’t we? Can we even get past them?
That was when I noticed Amber pulling out some kind of glass container from behind her back.
She then lifted a finger before summoning a flame above it which she then directed into the glass container, filling the container up with the flame.
Interestingly, the fire stayed in the container and remained burning as she continued to direct even more flames inside of it, filling the container with an impossibly large amount of flames.
When it seemed like the container was about to burst, she stopped the fire and threw the container through the door.
I watched as the container sailed over the heads of the armoured men to land in the centre of the group.
I was just about to ask Amber what that was supposed to do when the container exploded and released a torrent of flames that blasted the armoured men out from cover.
The fire also seemed to stick to the armoured men and burned their shields until it shattered, the fire now sticking to their armour and burning their armour directly.
A few of them started to panic and tried to put out the fire by patting them out, only to realise that the fire was now stuck to their hands instead and burning them there.
The others did not miss that chance to open fire on the now vulnerable enemies including us, hails of bullets lighting the armoured men up from three different directions.
Their armour was quickly torn apart and three of them fell almost immediately under the heavy onslaught.
Even now, the fire was still burning them without showing any signs of extinguishing themselves, which meant that they were taking damage from four different sources at the same time.
The rest tried to rally again but without any cover they could hide behind, it was impossible for them to recover from that.
I would have felt bad looking at that group of them huddled in a circle while trying to shoot back at us while still on fire and falling one by one, but I remembered that they did kill quite a lot of people to get here and I didn’t feel bad anymore.

Just as I thought they were going to be taken out, someone charged out from the corridor on the other side and leapt towards the remaining armoured men.
I realised that this was also one of those armoured men except this guy was way larger than a normal man and his armour looked to be more heavily armoured than the rest.
He smashed his fists into the ground, causing a shockwave to blast out from the impact and everyone that was caught in it was sent flying away.
We were only safe because we hid ourselves behind the doorframe so we weren’t sent flying like the others were.
Unfortunately, the smash also ended up extinguishing the fire which seemed to annoy Amber quite a bit.
I immediately tried to peek out to attack again but something flipped out from the back of the larger armoured guy and a shield dome was projected around him, protecting him and his comrades.
One of those armoured men then tossed something on the ground, exploding it into a cloud of smoke and hiding them from view.
No doubt they were trying to escape but it’s not like we could stop them at this point.
When the smoke cleared, it was as I had thought, they were already gone.
Heck, even the corpses had been taken away, though I wonder how they managed to carry that many people away with them that quickly.
After making sure that the coast was indeed clear, I stepped out from the doorway and entered the mess hall.
The remaining survivors were in the midst of picking themselves up from the ground and most of them nodded at me, aware that I was one of them.
“Anyone going after them?” I asked aloud, pointing in the direction that those guys escaped to.
The Mercs looked at one another, most of them already having sustained injuries from the earlier fight.
None of them stepped forward, which was what I expected since I doubt any of them would want to face those guys again after they know how outclassed they were compared to those armoured men.
I turned to look at the other side of the mess hall and those people were in an even worse shape than the Mercs.
“We’ll go on ahead then. But does anyone know how many there are?” I asked.
No one said anything.
Great… So we don’t know how many we’re up against either…
Then there’s just one other thing I need to ask…
“Are there any more friendlies up ahead?”
One of the Mercs spoke up, “Unfortunately, we could only enter the ship through one entrance that was before this area so any Mercs that came here would have gathered here already… Whether there’s any more crew members of this ship however…”
The Merc trailed off to eye the other side of the mess hall.
I turned to face the other way and one person stepped out from amongst them while holding his injured arm, “Our client… They’re still there… We need to–”
I held up a hand to stop him, “I already met your captain, I know they’re after the people you are escorting. Aside from them, is there anyone else?”
He shook his head.
Alright, that means we don’t need to worry about hiding Mara and Amber’s Psionic abilities anymore. We might actually stand a chance in that case.
I nodded at them, “Understood. Leave things to us then.”
One of the Mercs grimaced at me, “Are you sure, lady? Those guys really don’t look like pirates you know? I don’t know any pirates around here who have equipment like that…”
Ah… These guys really still think we’re dealing with pirates huh? I guess I should just keep my mouth shut about it, especially since the crew on the other side were making those faces.
I waved at him, “Don’t worry, we can handle it. Can I just leave the back to you guys in case more come from behind?”
“We’ll try our best… But don’t expect much… You already saw how we got our asses handed to us…”
I was really just saying that to be polite because I really don’t expect any of them to be able to stop them should these armoured guys come running…
Anyway… I guess we’ll have to deal with this ourselves… And they already know we’re coming.
Let’s do this~
