Chapter 448: They’re Transferring Over To Us
After I shot the three dead bodies with a few shotgun rounds to hide the fact that they were killed by having their necks broken, I turned back to the bunker door again.
“Are there any more of these guys around?” I asked.
Mara shook her head, “I made sure to check their memories before I killed them but they were indeed the last people left.”
“What about the corpses they took?”
“Stowed in one of the rooms they had used to hide their ambush earlier, Captain.”
I guess that accounts for all of them.
“Then I’ll call it in?”
The two girls nodded so I went ahead to call up the captain of the ship, the call only needing two rings before it connected.
“What is it? Don’t tell me you failed or something?” He asked the moment the call connected.
I moved my wrist so that he could see the bunker door behind me and said nothing.
He scoffed, “So you got to it. What about the bastards who boarded my ship?”
“Already dealt with,” I told him before turning to the two girls at the side.
Amber immediately answered my silent question, “two million.”
Wait, really? Alright then…
I turned back to the call, “You can prepare two million Credits to pay us as well.”
He frowned, “There’s no way you’re telling me there’s forty of those guys are you?”
I tilted my head at him, “You wanna come here and count them yourself? There’s a few we blew up so I guess good luck counting the pieces. OR you could go back on your word and not pay us but I think you are someone who honours their word right?”
The captain narrowed his eyes and I held his gaze without saying anything.
“Fine… I’ll take your word for it.”
I managed to act like I didn’t relax after hearing that.
That was honestly a small risk I took because if he had just said that he didn’t care and would only just pay another amount, we won’t really have leverage against him.
But since he was talking about honour and such earlier, I thought that he might also wish to honour his agreements he made as well.
Guess I got him right on the mark.
I nodded at the door behind me, “So is there anything else you need us to do? Or is this over?”
He opened his mouth to say something but then closed it.
He then stayed silent for a good few seconds before looking at me again, “Open the door.”
I raised an eyebrow at him, “What, you don’t trust us or something?”
“No. Open the door.”
I wasn’t sure if he meant ‘no, he did not trust us’ or ‘no, it’s not because of that’. Either way, I turned to the door and tried to look for a way to open it.
“The console is on your right,” The captain instructed.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Yeah thanks… Could have told me that earlier…
I found it embedded in the wall and obviously, it was locked.
I almost tried to hack it until I realised that would be a pretty bad look so I stopped myself from doing that.
“Hold your terminal close to it,” He ordered.
I raised my arm and held the screen close to it.
“Authentication code, override password, five, A, F, three, four, R, three, A, L.”
There was a beep coming from the console itself and the light on top of it turned green before a loud hiss came from the bunker door.
Locks seemed to be sliding out of their sockets before the door slowly slid open to the sides.
I stood in front of the door with Mara and Amber flanking my sides, the alarms around us blaring out a warning that the bunker was being opened.
Soon enough, we found ourselves standing in front of a group of five well dressed people that was a mix of two men and three women though they all shared the same traits of being really good looking.
I guess that’s a common trait of people who came from the inner colonies or something?
Also, despite the fact that the ship was being attacked, these five didn’t seem that worried and looked more bored than anything else.
I guess that’s mostly because the bunker was just a simple room that functioned as an additional living space but there weren’t any amenities or much space either.
One of the men stepped forward and stood in front of me, ignoring me completely to look at the screen of the captain projected in front of me.
“Is the coast clear now, Captain?”
“Yes. Please forgive the inconvenience that we have caused you.”
“We will be reporting this to the main family for this. How could you even allow this to happen?”
The captain bowed his head, “I understand and I accept all responsibility for this.”
“This wouldn’t have happened if you had just concentrated on getting to the station!”
“I understand, sir and I will put it in my report back to the family about this.”
Geez… Ok, now I know why the captain was so insistent on just running instead of staying… It’s because there’s someone else who has even less of a clue about how things work on the ship and he holds more authority than the captain himself…
The guy in front of me huffed, “Good. So are we ready to leave yet?”
The captain straightened himself, “My apologies, sir… But because the ship was struck and they also hit us with an EMP that took out our generators so it will take us a while to get it running again.”
The guy crossed his arms, “You got to be kidding me… We’re already running behind schedule and you’re telling me we’re going to be even later now?”
“If sir is not averse to alternatives, I have a solution.”
Oh god… I think I know where this is headed to…
The guy in front of me perked up, “Oh? If it helps us get there in time I’m open to suggestions.”
The captain nodded in my direction which was behind the screen so it looked a little weird from my side.
“The ones standing in front of you are Mercenaries that were hired as additional security to escort us to the station. They managed to take care of the intruders and from what I am able to tell, they have a C Class Combat Freighter which should have enough room for all of you to room on board. They can take you the rest of the way while we do emergency repairs here. This would also be less of a risk for you as our pursuers clearly know that you are on this ship so if you were to go with them, they might not chase after you.”
Goddamn it… I knew it…
The guy in front of me finally moved his gaze in my direction to stare at me.
“Them? Are you sure? These people are from the Outer Colonies, are they not?”
“That is correct, sir. But they clearly have skill as they were not only able to fight off our pursuers’ ships, they are also able to take them on in close combat as you could see. I believe your safety would be guaranteed if you were to go with them.”
“Ugh… That means we’ll have to travel with Outer Colonists? Is there anyone else here that can take us there that isn’t from the outer colonies?”
“I’m afraid our own escorts do not have the space on their ship to accommodate all of you, sir.”
“Tch… Then can’t you just get them to give you their ship and then have our own people fly it?”
I tensed up and I could feel the girls doing the same as well.
The captain bowed his head, “My apologies sir… But we would need to take time to familiarise ourselves with their ship in that case which may or may not take longer than just simply repairing this ship. For the fastest result, I will have to implore that you board their ship and let them take you to the station instead.”
The guy clucked his teeth in annoyance, “Fine then. But I will also be including this in the report as well, got it?”
The captain bowed even lower, “I thank you for your graciousness, sir.”
“Now if you’ll excuse me, we will have to go and pack if we want to leave this ship.”
Without even sparing me a glance, he walked past me while the others followed behind him.
I then realised that two of the girls were in a relationship with the two men as they went up to hug their arm while the last woman simply walked behind them.
Well, not that I care about their relationship status anyway…
The captain raised his head and turned back to me, “As you heard, I am now hiring you to escort them to the station as well. Please understand that rejection is no longer an option and I will pay you more to take this request.”
Tch… This is really annoying…
Also, what do you mean ‘rejection is no longer an option’?!
