Chapter 449: We Got Researchers On Board
I’ll give the captain some credit here… He’s basically sacrificing himself right now because if those ‘pirates’ find him, he’s a dead man.
He even told the Mercs that they could leave and paid them all their dues.
And yes, he also paid us, even giving us an advance on the job of bringing those researchers to the station.
I asked if he wasn’t afraid that I would take the money and run but he just stared at me and said nothing.
I guess I shouldn’t ask anymore and since we planned to sell those Psionic Crystals at the research station anyway, it would be beneficial for us to go there in the first place.
Still… Even if we didn’t, I wouldn’t want to do anything that may bring trouble to us in the future… And taking money and failing to do a job for someone from the Inner Colonies sound like just the kind of thing I should avoid doing.
Anyway, I sent Lea and Ries an update on our situation that they should be expecting guests over and a quick explanation on what had transpired.
That should be enough to avoid our new guests being treated like intruders once we returned.
I then had to wait with Mara and Amber outside the entrance hatch for those researchers and it took almost half an hour before the first one showed up.
I realised that it was the woman that had followed behind the group, the one that did not seem to be attached.
She had several bags with her that were being carried by small drones floating around her.
The woman was bespectacled and her dark brown hair that went just past her shoulders were drooped messily around her. Behind those lenses of her glasses only partially hid the dark circles present under her eyes, similar to how the lab coat she was wearing almost hid the curvaceous figure she had underneath.
Of course, her assets were nowhere as big as mine so it’s not like they were especially eye catching or anything.
She looked around and a frown appeared, “The others aren’t here yet?”
I shook my head.
She let out a sigh, “I already expected them to be slow so I took my time as well… But do they not even realise that we almost got killed by pirates? There’s a limit to being how clueless one can be… Actually scratch that… Human stupidity is infinite…”
I gave her a look, “You don’t sound like you like your co-workers much.”
She turned back to me, “You’ve met one for barely five minutes and I already can tell that you don’t like the one who spoke to you, am I wrong?”
I shrugged, “I don’t really have an opinion on him to be honest.”
“Hmph… If you say so. But I know the two behind you definitely have thoughts about him.
Both Mara and Amber stayed silent and I didn’t say anything either because I also know that as a fact.
She waved at us, “I get it. It’s not good for you to badmouth your clients so don’t bother saying anything. But to answer your question, you already know why I do not like them. They’re not even here because of merit but just because of connections. I was even passed over for the position of leader just because that guy was some other guy’s cousin. Then those two harlots happily gave up their positions just to stick to them… Pure, utter trash.”
Yeah… She definitely doesn’t like her co-workers.
I gestured towards the door, “You can board first if you wish.”
“It’s fine, I’ll wait here. I do have some questions for you though.”
I tilted my head slightly, “Ok? Shoot.”
“Firstly, are you the captain of the ship? No… Are you the leader of this Mercenary group?”
I nodded, “If you are asking about this ship’s group… Yes I am.”
“In that case, how many rooms do you have on your ship? Do we have to share rooms or could we get a room each?”
“Don’t worry, there’s enough rooms for all of you to get a room to yourself without having the need to share if you don’t want to.”

“Good. What about food? Don’t tell me it’s all those packeted synthfood crap…”
I was about to tell her that we do have organic food when Amber interrupted, “What do you think we are? Nobles? Of course poor Mercenaries like us can only afford cheap things like synthfood.”
Huh… I’m guessing it’s not good to let her know that we have organic food? Guess I’ll have to ask her later.
The woman made a face of disgust, “Ugh… I guess that’s to be expected… Fine, whatever… Good thing I prepared some food of my own so that’s still bearable. How many men are there on your crew?”
“None,” I answered immediately.
She frowned at me, “None? Like absolutely zero?”
I hesitated, “Umm… If you are asking about how many people on the ship has a dick… Then it’s just me.”
She looked me up and down but just shrugged, “That’s all I need to know.”
I wonder why she needed to know about that but I decided not to ask.
Instead, I was curious about something else, “Am I allowed to ask you questions?”
“Hmm… You can ask but I may not answer depending on the question.”
“Alright… What are you guys heading to that station for?”
She raised an eyebrow at me, “Don’t you already know what that station is known for?”
“The black hole or something?”
“That’s right. So that’s what we’re going there for, obviously.”
“So what do you do?”
She looked away, obviously hearing the question but choosing not to answer.
Right… I guess that’s either something she doesn’t want to or couldn’t answer.
“Was that guy I spoke to the leader of your group?”
Her face turned sour, “Of course not. His only ‘authority’ is that he has some relation to the family. Very distant relations if I might add. Then he uses that to lord over us like he earned it.”
“I see… Do you have a name I can call you by?”
She remained silent.
I wonder why that was something she wasn’t willing to answer?
Right then, several footsteps came from the other side and we turned to see the other four researchers walking towards us with a cargo drone carrying a whole bunch of boxes for them. The two women were still latched onto their arms and acting like they were on a date instead.
Unlike the woman in front of us who was dressed like a researcher with her lab coat, they were dressed in clothes that looked more like they were going to a nightclub instead.
The other woman furrowed her brows upon seeing them, clearly unhappy to see them.
The guy who I had assumed to be the leader said something to them and they laughed along like he had just told a joke, though even I could tell that the laughter was rather forced.
The woman turned to me, “How long more before we reach our destination?”
I hesitated, “I will need to check the map on the ship to give you an answer for that…”
“Tch… I just hope that this will be better than my time on this ship… Oh what am I talking about? It would definitely be just as bad…”
The other group reached us and she turned away, clearly to avoid eye contact with the guy.
The guy didn’t even say anything to me and just simply brushed past me to walk towards the door without acknowledging any of us.
He stopped when the door did not open, looking confused at it.
“Hey? What’s the hold up here? Why isn’t the door opening?” He shouted.
Damn… You had to deal with him all this while? I actually pity both that woman, the captain and the crew on this ship.
Now I know why that Captain was more than happy to pay the exorbitant amount I requested from him to complete the escort for him…
Just saying, he’s paying me one million Credits per person and now I have a feeling that I was undercharging him…
I nodded at the woman researcher and went over to the door with her and my other girls, letting it scan me so that it could cycle open.
“Oh finally. I knew these Outer Colonists would have such backwater tech that they need so much time to even respond,” He grumbled.
The girl that was hanging on his arm giggled, “Ehehe~ They are just not used to your greatness so they need time to process it~”
“Ahahaha! That is true! Now I think I need to ask them to pay me for allowing them to be graced with my presence don’t you think?”
The others laughed with him.
I leaned towards the woman researcher, “You had to put up with that?”
“It’s not that bad since I got to lock myself in my own room. You have my condolences though.”
Great… Is it too late to ask for more Credits from the Captain?
