Chapter 496: At Least There’s Better Pay
Ok, so apparently there’s some station administrators doing some shady stuff in the station…
And then this station administrator is hiring us to deal with it…
I raised an eyebrow at him, “I have some questions.”
He nodded at me, “As you should, go ahead.”
“Why us?”
“Oh, you are not the only one I’m hiring. I’ve also contacted several other Mercs for this so you don’t need to worry about being the only one I can rely on.”
I read between the lines and I understood that he was basically telling us that we weren’t that special.
He probably also approached other Mercs groups like he did with us and even if we rejected his offer, he would not be in that big of a trouble.
“How much are you paying?” I asked.
“I’ll have one of my people keep in contact with your group. They will send you the name and location of the gangs and we’ll pay you according to the size of the group.”
“And how much will we be looking at on average?”
“At least a few hundred thousand Credits at minimum per group. The groups would probably be around twenty to maybe a hundred strong. Think you’re up for it?”
Well shit, that’s already better paying than the guild hustles that we’re taking.
Heck, if we find any guild hustles that are also targeting the same gangs, we could also take them too.
“Which ring will you be sending us?”
“We’ll start on the second ring first. If we go directly to the first ring, they might get suspicious.”
Tsk… So we still have to work our way down… At least we’re being paid more I guess.
I turned to look at my girls and they both gave me the same look that basically said they would leave the decision up to me.
Hmm… Last question then…
“If we help you, would the other station administrators come after us?”
He paused for just a short moment but I most definitely noticed.
“I cannot guarantee that they won’t… And if enough of them are wiped, they might realise what’s going on and send people to intercept you. But if you’re worried about them openly attacking you, that should not happen as it would be announcing their involvement with those gangs which would not help their position. So at best, they would be getting other gangs to team up to fight you or maybe hiring underground Mercs to deal with you.”
Tsk… So we might also need to worry about others aside from those gang members…
Fine, at least this guy is paying us a premium to deal with the thugs and it also helps us get closer to our real target anyway, so why not get paid to do it?
I nodded at him, “Fine, count us in.”
He grinned, “Perfect. I’ll get one of my people to contact you soon.”
As though on cue, the car came to a stop and the door slid open on its own.
I guess that was our signal to leave.
We stepped out of the car before the vehicle sped off and I looked around to see that we were dropped in some kind of residential district.
It shouldn’t be a long walk to reach the elevator from here so the car must have been driving around in circles the entire time.

I turned to the girls, “So what do you think?”
Amber crossed her arms, “I don’t trust him.”
“Why? I think he’s been quite honest with us, hasn’t he? Or is it because you read his mind?”
Amber tapped the side of her head, “That’s what worries me. His thoughts were exactly the same as his words.”
I raised an eyebrow, “Isn’t that something normal?”
Amber shook her head, “When you talk to someone, don’t your mind sometimes wander and think about other things? Like right now, you’re thinking back on the earlier conversation with that guy instead of just the words you spoke to me, right?”
Ah, I see what she was trying to tell me.
“So you mean for that guy… His thoughts matched his words a hundred percent of the time without wandering?”
“That’s right. Either he has trained himself to do that or that guy isn’t even human… Or he’s being brainwashed by someone else…”
“Eh? Can that happen?”
“I would be a fool if I did not at least consider them as possibilities…”
I think that was her way of telling me that she has seen it happen before.
Something tells me that I’m better off not asking for details because I think that might have something to do with Psionics…
Lea turned to her, “Does that mean it’s better if we didn’t take the job?”
Amber waved her hand in front of her, “No, no. I believe he was at least honest about the gangs. I’m just thinking that he might not be giving us all the details for this job.”
“So… There might be bigger problems involved or something?”
Amber nodded, “Like some of these gangs might have military grade equipment for one.”
“Well… Would that be a problem for us?”
Amber smirked, “Not at all~”
I grinned back at her, “Then I guess there’s no problem.”
We’ve already faced people on that level anyway so we should be able to deal with it if that happens. And Amber can always just make use of her ‘fire grenades’ again if she needs to mask the use of her Psionic powers.
I guess for now, we just need to wait for that Devimino guy to get his contact to–
Right then, my Codex let out a notification beep and I looked down at it.
Wait, already?
I lifted up my arm to tap on it, the screen showing that I had a new message from an unknown contact.
Lea and Amber peeked over my shoulder as I opened the message to see its contents.
[New target. Eliminate all members of Vamotaris Gang. Known to use droids. Attached base location and profile of leader. Reply to this contact with picture of dead leader to confirm mission completion.]
I opened the attachment and sure enough, there was a map of their base as well as pictures of how the building looked as well as a picture of a scarred man with half of his face replaced with cybernetic implants.
By the sign that read ‘First Circle Bar’ hanging at the front door, I’m assuming that place used to be a bar before this gang took over.
Ironic that it seems I can’t get away from bars here…
I turned to the girls, “So… Are we heading there right now? Or do we need some time to prepare?”
Amber took a moment to check her ammo, “Hmm… I’m good to go if you are.”
Lea also checked her satchel that contained her rifle magazines before giving me a curt nod.
Checking my own shotgun shells, I did a quick count and I only expended just about a quarter of the ammunition I had brought along for the previous job so I should also be good to go.
That’s not counting my sidearm which I only used one mag’s worth of ammo and I still had several spares for it.
“Right, we might as well just get this over with and see if this guy is worth working for.”
Before that, I scrolled through the Guild’s site to check if there were any hustles posted that specifically requested for Mercs to deal with that area and what do you know? There was one.
I almost snickered at the reward offered for clearing that area.
The Guild was paying a measly ten thousand Credits just to clear that area and we’re at least getting ten times the amount from Devimino to do the exact same thing.
The job was even classified as a Silver Rank too and I can see why it was still not taken if the pay was that poor for something like that.
For a job like this, I’d think that at least maybe fifteen or twenty people are needed to complete it and they might even face casualties. So you’re splitting ten thousand Credits twenty ways which means you’re only earning five hundred Credits for putting your life on the line.
Of course, I went to take it since I won’t say no to extra money and also to prevent another Merc group from taking it and clashing with us on this job.
I mean… Even if another Merc group showed up while we were attacking the gang or were already dealing with them when we arrived, it won’t even be a big problem to us since all we need to do is to take a picture of the dead leader and we’ll get the money.
So at most, we can either work together or tell the other Merc group that we were giving them all the credit and we’re just there because we wanted to shoot up some thugs.
With that decided, I went ahead to send a message to inform Ries and Mara about our new arrangements before I led the way back to the elevator to head down to the lower rings once more.
Time to make more money~
