Chapter 497: Wanna Drive?
The same guards gave us weird looks as we returned to the second ring to do that station administrator’s job.

They were probably wondering if we went back up to take another job immediately to come down here again.

We didn’t need to explain anything to them so I simply checked the map on my Codex before we started making our way towards the job location.

Once more, we were treated to the unenviable sight of broken buildings, soulless people and trashed sidewalks.

The sound of gunshots could still be heard so I’m guessing that this really was a common occurrence on this ring.

Let’s see now… The map says that it’s… Oh wow, that’s actually pretty far away… It’s quite deep in the city area as far as I can tell…

I didn’t notice this since I had the map zoomed out earlier but at this distance, it might take us about an hour of walking just to get there…

If this was just a normal place, I wouldn’t really mind walking an hour with Amber and Lea to reach there… But the problem is that this wasn’t just a normal place…

Who knows what kind of trouble we might run into just by walking along the street? On our last job, we couldn’t even cross two streets without running into a shootout.

Sure, we didn’t get involved in that one but what an hour’s walk would give us plenty of chances to get involved in something problematic.

Hmm… Maybe if I look at the map and look for an alternative route or something…

Right as I thought of that, I realised the sound of a particular set of gunshots were getting louder and louder.

I turned in the direction of the gunshots and I saw a car speeding down the road in our direction.

See what I mean?!

I pushed the girls back towards safety as two more cars turned the corner to chase after it before it was followed by a pickup truck at the very back.

Wait… Does that pickup truck have a mounted machine gun on it?!

All of them seemed to be shooting at the two cars at the front while the two cars were shooting back at them, the gunners leaning out of the windows to fire their weapons.

One of the guys at the front seat in the second car got shot through the head and his body fell out of the car as the vehicle turned around the corner, bouncing on the road before rolling forward a couple more metres.

The third car managed to swerve around to avoid it before continuing the chase but the truck driver didn’t react fast enough and drove right over the corpse.

He ended up losing control over the car and it spun a few circles on the road, stopping with the front of the car pointing in the opposite direction when it reached the intersection a short distance from where we were.

Two more cars came from around the corner they had first appeared from and this group seemed to be antagonistic towards the second group as they immediately fired at the pickup truck the moment they saw them.

And because the truck had skidded to a stop, those guys were practically sitting ducks as the two cars drove by.

They didn’t even give the truck occupants any chance as they lit up the vehicles with a hail of gunshots, the mounted machine gunner being the first to be shot dead before the driver and the passenger were also gunned down without mercy.

The two cars then sped off, chasing after the first group without hesitation.

I looked at the truck, then at the girls, then back at the truck again.

“Any of you know how to drive?” I asked.

Amber turned to me, “You don’t?”

I shrugged, “I mean… I can drive but that’s in my old universe. I don’t know if the cars have changed here and I’d rather not risk it right now.”

Amber grinned, “I can drive~ How about you ride beside me?”

“I was thinking of manning the machine gun at the back to be honest.”

“I’ll take the passenger seat instead,” Lea offered before Amber could try to convince me otherwise. “I’m not letting Mistress sit on that seat that has been dirtied by blood.”

Right… The machine gunner already fell off the truck after being shot but the corpses of the driver and the passenger were still there.

“Just checking… There’s no problem with us taking this truck for ourselves right?” I asked.

Amber chuckled, “Ahahaha! Tera, are you even seeing the fact that we just witnessed a bunch of people getting killed on the streets and no one batting an eye? I suppose the only problem we might face is that the two groups from earlier might mistake us as on the side of this group and start shooting at us but we can just shoot back at them~”

Right… I suppose she does have a point…

I sent Amber the coordinates so that she could use her own personal terminal to guide herself there while I climbed on to the back of the pickup truck to man the mounted machine gun.

The two girls pulled out the corpses and dumped them on the side of the road before climbing in, not even bothered by the fact that they were taking the place of two corpses.

The windshield was already cracked from the bullet holes so Amber braced her foot and kicked the windshield out and tossed that aside as well.

She then started the truck again before she did a U-turn with the truck and started heading down a different street.

I felt the wind blowing against my face and I realised this wasn’t as cool as I thought it would be where I could ride at the back holding the machine gun like some kind of a badass.

Those movies fucking lied.

I had to squint my eyes while huddling behind the machine gun itself to shield myself from the wind blowing in my face.

I wonder how Amber and Lea were even dealing with this seeing that they were also missing a windshield right now.

“Tera!! Behind us!!” Amber suddenly shouted out.

Eh? Behind?

I peeked behind me to see a van chasing after us, the driver accelerating the car at maximum speed to catch up to us.

I guess without the windshield, it was hard for Amber to drive at maximum speed as well so we could not outrun it.

The side door of the van then slid open, revealing several thugs at the back who immediately pointed their guns in my direction.

Grabbing onto the handles of the machine gun, I swung the barrel to point towards the van and I could see the driver widened his eyes in surprise.

What? Did he not see the big gun we had on the back?

Did he think I was just hanging out on the bed of the truck for fun or something?

I pulled the trigger and the machine gun started firing at the van, riddling the vehicle with bullet holes. The thugs that had been trying to shoot at me were blown back into the van’s interior, dying almost instantly.

The driver of the van slammed on the brakes but I simply needed to adjust my aim a little before I was firing at the driver seat as well, blowing the front of the van into scrap metal and riddling the thug with bullet holes.

Hey, blame yourself for trying to attack us. If you had just minded your own business, you wouldn’t be dead right now.

“Tera!! The front, the front!” Amber’s voice came from the truck’s cabin.

Swivelled to point the machine gun at the front just in time to see a sedan swerve out in front of us from an alleyway to cut in front of us.

Amber slammed on the brakes to avoid ramming into them, throwing me forward into the machine gun and preventing me from taking aim at it.

A thug stuck himself out of the side window to sit on the door before thrusting out his hand to point his pistol at me.

I would have been able to tank the shot with my shield anyway by Lea had her sniper rifle out and propped up on the dashboard of the car, the Alv firing a shot that ended up piercing through his leg that was still inside the car and throwing off his aim.

I was wondering why she aimed at the guy’s leg instead of his head when the bullet continued through his legs until it pierced through the backrest of the driver seat and blasted the driver’s head open.

The car swerved to the side and ended up flipping after hitting the curb.

The unfortunate thing for the thug that had been aiming at me was that the car flipped on the side he was at so he got himself crushed under the car after his legs got blown out.

Oof… I don’t think he’s going to walk away from that one…

Amber didn’t even seem bothered by the sight and merely swerved around it before she continued driving like nothing happened.

Great… So even if we drive, we’re still going to be bothered huh… This place sucks.
