Chapter 527: They Had Someone Bigger
It only just occurred to me that I’m basically looking at a mutant vs machine right now…

On one side, we had Mercs who are mostly Cyware modded and the thugs who were Gene modded fighting in this raid.

And right now, the machine side was winning.

Although I would have to admit that the fact that we had better weapons was one of the reasons for that. These thugs were really just relying on their Gene mods to do the heavy lifting for them.

I guess on this ring where most gangs don’t have really good weapons to begin with, these Gene mods would actually put you at an advantage. But since we were using better equipment, we could easily close the gap.

And as proof of that…

Another one of those tank thugs appeared, this one seemingly even more roided up than the previous one and preparing to throw another wall at us.

I immediately switched to the shoulder mounted Autocannon and fired at him, the artillery blasting a hole in his chest before he could throw the wall. He wobbled unsteadily before the wall fell right on top of him, crushing him underneath it.

Hmph… The other guy only managed to approach me because I didn’t expect the shotgun to fail on him. Otherwise I would have just used the autocannon as well.

That’s not to say we were completely unharmed though, as we suffered a few casualties on our side.

Apparently there were thugs who could shoot out spikes from their arms and those could bypass shields for some reason and killed a few of the Mercs. Thankfully, those spikes simply bounced off my power armour so I didn’t need to worry about them.

Additionally, while I could handle those tank type thugs rather handily, the same could not be said of the other Mercs as they couldn’t take it down thanks to their bullet proof skin.

They needed heavy ordnance to take one down and they didn’t have a lot of that with them. Plus those that actually have equipment that could take those guys down choose to use it for themselves rather than saving the others if they could help it.

As I had expected, the people here will backstab each other if given the chance.

The only reason they haven’t done anything to me was because they still needed me to clear out the thugs since I was their best defense against them right now.

I have no doubt that the moment they believe I was a burden or a threat, they would turn against me without hesitation.

Well… The feeling is mutual on my side so I’m not holding that against them.

Instead, I focused on shooting down even more of the thugs that were trying to shoot back at us.

Taking a moment to check on my ammo reserves that were displayed on the corner of my screen, I called up Ries using our comms.

“Ries? Do you see the guy yet?”

“Unn… Not yet Boss… Unless the guy managed to change his face or something but he’s still not out yet… And I finished checking the area but there’s no underground tunnels either.”

“Hmm… So he’s either still hiding somewhere or he’s not even here?”

“That seems to be the case, Boss…”

“Guess we’ll just need to push all the way in then!”

I raised my arm and fired another hail of bullets that shredded through a crowd of thugs, reducing them to a red mist as we continued our advance.

“Shit! I’m out! Anyone got a spare mag?!” One of the Mercs yelled.

“Fuck! I’m out of ammo too! There’s too many of them!”

“Just pick up their guns and use them you idiots! They can kill just as well!”

Seems like the Mercs were not prepared to kill this many people on this raid…

At least I don’t have that issue since I was here expecting to take on a small army to begin with so I brought enough ammo to do just that.

And even if I did run out of ammo, I could still just resort to close quarters combat.

More thugs poured out from the warehouses and I aimed my Autocannon in their direction, firing a quick shot at the crowd and blowing an entire group up.

A few of them tried to shoot back with their guns and one of them even shot some green glob at me which I suspect was some kind of acid.

I simply dodged the liquid before I raised my left hand and fired a quick burst from my minigun to shred the spitter apart.

“Boss? There’s two warehouses left and they’ve barricaded themselves in there. I’m sure the guy is in one of them!”

I huffed, “Guess I’ll have to check each one to make sure?”

“Nggh… If they had given me this guy’s bio-signatures, I could possibly pinpoint him but we don’t… Sorry Boss.”

“It’s alright, I can deal with this.”

I decided to go to the warehouse on the right first but before I could start fighting my way towards the warehouse, the door of the warehouse suddenly exploded open and a large shadow appeared in the resulting dust cloud from the explosion.

All of us paused to look at the smoke cloud, wondering what the shadow was.

There was a roar and the shockwave blasted out from the front of the warehouse, dissipating the dust cloud in the process to reveal a giant mutated human over five metres tall and fully roided up with his gigantic arms.

Oh fuck.

At first, I thought this was our target who decided to pump himself full of those Gene mods as some last ditch attempt to take us all out but this guy does not look like him so I don’t think he was the target. And I wasn’t saying that just because he has arms the size of an apartment building and chest that looked more like the windscreen of a ship.

“Ries?” I mumbled through the comms.

“I see it Boss…”

“Is that our target?”

“… Ah… No, Boss.”

“Do you think this Power Armour can take it?”

“Umm… Well… I don’t think so, Boss…”

That’s what I thought…

The monstrosity let out another roar and started charging towards us.

Unsurprisingly, the Mercs that had been with me all turned tail and ran without a second thought, some of them even abandoning their weapons as dead weight so that they could run faster.

I had the idea of staying to fight for a moment but even I wouldn’t be able to fight that and all the remaining thugs on my own.

If Amber was here though, I would have stayed and fought this thing with no questions asked.

But since all I had was just the power armour and the drones from Ries, I wasn’t going to try.

I turned around and ran after the rest of the Mercs as well, everyone now in full retreat.

Unfortunately, I was obviously slowed down by the Power Armour I was wearing and I could hear the stomping behind me getting closer and closer.

“Boss!! Switch to sprint mode!!” Ries cried out through the comms.

This armour has a ‘sprint mode’?”

“Umm… Activate sprint mode?” I tried.

The power armour’s AI spoke through the helmet’s speakers, “Sprint mode activated.”

All of a sudden, the armour felt lighter and the legs part of the armour felt like it was moving by itself and I didn’t even need to put much force to move it anymore.

I was outpacing everyone and literally zoomed past every other Merc that had been in front of me earlier.

Obviously, those Mercs were probably thinking that I was diabolical for being the one who started this entire fight and being the one to run the fastest.

Well, sucks for you guys, but they all started running first anyway.

All of us scattered as soon as we reached the outer walls of the warehouses and I ran back to the building that my girls had set up, turning around the corner before hiding behind it.

That giant monstrosity managed to catch a few of the Mercs and crushed them but it seemed reluctant to chase after the ones that ran past the walls so it just stopped there before turning back.

Tsk… I guess that thing is their trump card so that’s probably why the leader didn’t run away since he believed this thing could just trample on us.

Even from here, I could hear the cheers coming from the thugs as they celebrated their victory over us.

I zoomed in on the suit’s visor and I could even see their leader right now standing in the middle of the thugs and celebrating amongst them cheekily. That bastard really was hiding in the warehouse this entire time huh?

Wait a minute…

He’s standing out there… In the open… Right in clear view of–

His head exploded as Lea’s sniper round pierced through his head, blasting his head open and splattering his blood and brain matter all over his comrades before his body fell onto the ground.

…

Well that was easy?
