Chapter 967: The Hypocrite
At this point, I’m surprised that Unerolia hasn’t cut him down yet from the frustration of having to deal with him.
I could at least tell that she really wanted to do it since her hand had shifted to rest on the pommel of her sword and gripping it tightly.
Unerolia sucked in a deep breath before she continued, “Fine then, let’s arrange a meeting with your guests for dinner. But for now, we can continue the questioning inside the castle.”
He smiled at her, “Oh! In that case could I trouble you to come back later? I will need some time to prepare, you see. And I did come back from a long journey so I would need to have a bath first. How does lunch time sound?”
Unerolia growled, “No. We’re doing it right now.”
He looked down at himself, “But I’m still in travel clothes you know? And I’m still dirty too. I don’t want to be leaving dirt all around my castle.”
Unerolia shot him a look, “Don’t you mean, ‘my’ castle?”
“Ah, yes. Of course, of course. My mistake. So anyway, I’ll go take a bath first, ok?”
Unerolia slammed her foot on the ground hard enough to cause a crack, the action causing the Ragnus guy to recoil back in surprise.
“I am not going to wait for you to finish a bath before attending to me. Esmeral!”
Her secretary slave went over to her while hugging several files and presented the first one from the top over to her.
Unerolia flipped open the file and glared at him, “The taxes you have collected do not match up with the amount that you have sent. Why?”
He looked genuinely confused, “Huh? What do you mean?”
“Last month, there was a discrepancy of ten thousand Creas between what was collected and what was sent. Why?”
He tapped a finger on his chin, “Huh… Ten thousand Creas? What did… Oh! That’s right! I spent that on renovating the castle’s interior as well as buying some slaves!”
What?
Wait… Did he really do that? Even worse, the fact that he’s saying it out loud like that as if he didn’t even do anything wrong… Does he not understand what he’s done?
Unerolia only paused for a second before flipping the page on the file.
“Two months ago, there’s a difference of twenty thousand Creas. Explain.”
“Oh yeah. I used that to make several investments to the businesses around the area. Don’t worry, I plan to pay it back once the investments bear fruit so there’s nothing to worry about. Oh, I also needed some of it to buy more slaves.”
“Three months ago… Fifteen thousand Creas.”
“Oh, there were a few things. The colour of the walls were bothering me a little so I had to hire some workers to paint them. Then there were some merchants selling really nice furniture so I bought them for the castle but was a little short on Creas so I borrowed some from there. Then I also needed some more Creas to buy a few more slaves.”
“Four months ago… Eight thousand Creas.”
“Ah yes. I only needed that to buy more slaves.”
Unerolia handed the file back to Esmeral who gave her another file in return.
Mother then tugged on my arm and I looked to the side to realise that Mary and Katsuki had already set up a table with tea prepared for us, prompting me to take a seat with Mother there.
There weren’t any sweets since I knew I would get distracted if I were to start munching on them and I wanted to pay attention to this scene right now.
The ironic thing was that this was clearly an inquiry aimed at that Ragnus guy but I think the only person who didn’t know what was going on was the person himself.
Look, even the castle staff and the guards were visibly cringing at everything he was saying.
The Ragnus guy was smiling at Unerolia as she flipped through the next file, completely oblivious to his surroundings.

Unerolia snapped the file shut before gesturing around her, “From the reports, the number of staff employed by the castle remained the same and the overall permanent population in the fort also hasn’t changed. You’ve just told me that you’ve allocated four months worth of money to buy more slaves. Where have you sent these slaves?”
“Hmm? I freed them of course! I bought them from illegal slavers to save them from being slaves.”
Silence descended on the area around us as the people that knew about this facepalmed while the people who were just learning about it stared at him in shock.
Unerolia blinked at him, “You… Bought slaves… From illegal slavers? To save them from being slaves?”
“Of course? Isn’t that the good thing to do? I buy them to free them right afterwards. Obviously that’s what a good person does!”
“What about the illegal slavers?”
“What about them?”
“Did you not do anything to them?”
“Huh? Of course not? What could I do to them?”
“Maybe something like, kill them?” Unerolia seethed.
He shook his head, “No, no. How can you say something like that? Those are people too! We can’t just kill them like that!”
What is this guy…
Does he not understand that this would not solve the problem and would just make the illegal slavers get more slaves because there is literally someone who was buying the slaves they catch from them with no repurcussions?
I had to give him a check with [Screened].

What the heck…
These are really bad stats for someone in his position… Or is this just the norm and I’ve just been meeting really strong people this entire time?
Yeah… I think it might be the latter…
But seriously… This is really pathetic my guy…
I looked at Mother and she was just calmly sipping her tea like whatever he just said was no surprise to her.
Yeah… I’m pretty sure Mother already knew about this beforehand…
Turning back to the scene, Unerolia seemed to be on the verge of a mental breakdown but she straightened herself and beckoned at the side, prompting a person I recognised to walk out from the crowd.
Oh it’s Bob. Hi Bob! Where have you been?
“Do you recognise him?” The Marchioness asked.
Ragnus pointed at Bob, “Oh yeah! I know you! The guy who is supposedly from some other world or something. Didn’t I take you to those freedom fighters to help them?”
Even Bob was looking confused by him, “Freedom fighters? Those were bandits! They were illegal slavers! Didn’t you know that?!”
“Huh? I placed you in charge, didn’t I? Since you’re a criminal slave, I even place those orders on you to make sure you don’t do anything bad. I even assigned one of the people there as your adjudant to take care of stuff.”
Wait a minute… This guy frees those slaves yet he kept Bob as a slave so he could order him to do all that…
“You kept me in the basement of a house and forced me to keep summoning beasts so that those bandits could use them to attack others! Did you not know that?!”
He waved at Bob dismissively, “What even is this criminal slave talking about? Who allowed you to talk to someone like me?”
Bob turned to look at Unerolia who shook his head at him, “I heard enough. You can return.”
Surprisingly, Bob actually gave her a bow before turning and leaving. Seems like he got some education on etiquette or something.
The Marchioness then took another file from Esmeral and opened it up to scan through its contents before snapping it shut.
She pointed the edge of the file at Ragnus, “Those guests of yours that are staying here… Those were the illegal slaves that you ‘freed’ aren’t they?”
He looked surprised and I thought he was shocked that she knew until the next few words came out from his mouth.
“Eh? So you already know who the guests are? Then why were you acting like you didn’t know that before, my Lady?”
“The question I want to know the answer to is why are they being made to stay here? You said you freed them but my sources claim that you are keeping them here.”
“That’s because I bought them right? So they need to repay me for the Creas I spent on them. That’s why I’m keeping them here and they aren’t allowed to leave until they have at least paid me back the money I had spent to free them.”
…
…
Wait a minute… Isn’t that also just slavery but with extra steps? Does this guy really just genuinely have no idea or is he just being disingenuous on purpose?
What even is going on inside that head of yours?
