Chapter 968: The Other One Wasn’t Much Better
I think Unerolia’s patience ran out and she cut the inquiry short to storm up to Ragnus, a look of fury on her face.
The guy still had no clue what was going on and let out a surprised sounding ‘eep’ when Unerolia reached out and grabbed him by his neck.
She lifted him up with that single hand and continued walking towards the castle entrance, not paying any attention to the guy that was currently struggling in her grasp.
Mother stood up from her seat and giggled, “Ufufufu~ Seems like we would be having a scene change now~”
She’s really treating this like some kind of play, isn’t she?
Then again, I suppose so am I.
Mother and I followed behind them while Katsuki and Mary accompanied us. I also noted that the castle staff and the guards were intentionally looking away from us and staying outside the castle.
I’m guessing they either already know what was going to happen or they don’t want to be involved in it. Or both, I guess.
Ragnus was still struggling and choking in Unerolia’s grasp as she walked through the castle gates, completely unhindered by the extra weight she was holding in her hand.
Somehow, the image of a noble lady carrying a handbag came to mind when I saw the sight which was both hilarious and sad at the same time.
The Marchioness continued her dignified walk into the castle, looking like she was merely out for a stroll instead of carrying some guy up in the air with one hand.
We reached what I presumed to be the audience hall which, instead of a throne as I had expected, looked more like a courtroom instead.
There, a person was standing at the end with his back facing us. And even though I could not see his face, I knew it was Carlas.
“Ah, welcome back, my lord,” He called out without looking back, his attention fixed on a notebook he was writing in. “You might want to know that there are more slaves that need your rescue that were captured by bandits. But right now, our coffers are running a little low so we might not be able to afford the price again.”
Oh wow… Is this guy the actual mastermind behind this entire thing? Was Ragnus just being manipulated by him to make all these stupid decisions?
And here I thought he was just being stupid by himself… Turns out he was just being manipulated to do so…
Unerolia stopped a few steps behind Carlas and the guy finally turned back, only to raise an eyebrow in slight surprise when he saw the state of his boss in Unerolia’s hands.
I was expecting him to start panicking but he simply gave Unerolia a polite bow, “Greetings, Lady Lehcaruoc. How may we be of service to you today?”
She scowled at him, “What have the two of you been doing behind my back here?”
“I’m afraid I do not understand what you mean, Lady Lehcaruoc?”
“You’re misusing funds for your own personal projects are you not? Do you have any explanations for that?”
He frowned, “Nobles are meant to help the people are we not? Is there anything wrong with using that money to help the people by freeing them from illegal slavers?”
Wait… Is this guy…
Unerolia dropped Ragnus on the ground and scowled at Carlas, “First of all, every territory is allocated funds according to how much the overall budget of the Kingdom has and the funds are distributed according to the policies for the year. These funds are obtained from every territory contributing via taxes so if one territory is taking some of that for themselves, it means less would be allocated to other territories. You are depriving other places of the Creas they need to manage those territories.”
Carlas frowned, “This is an emergency. If we don’t buy those illegal slaves to free them, they will be taken away.”
“That brings me to my second and third point. The second point being that it’s not up to you to decide what to do with the funds that are collected here. If you need more, make a request to me and I will deal with it. Thirdly, you are literally funding the people who are doing this. Do you think they would just take the money and stop doing it?”
He shook his head, “That would take too long, wouldn’t it? By the time you respond, they would be gone.”
“I understand. I would have forgiven a month, maybe even two of this happening. But have you submitted a report or even a request about this for the past four months? Even though I know this has been going on for more than that?”
“This is a problem in our territory so we have to deal with it ourselves.”
Unerolia paused and narrowed her eyes at him, “Your territory?”

Even Carlas knew he fucked up with that one and quickly stammered, “The territory placed under our care…”
“So whose territory is it?”
“The Lehcaruoc Kingdom’s…”
“And placed under whose direct jurisdiction?”
“Yours, Lady Lehcaruoc…”
“So should I be informed about things that are going on within this territory?”
“Y… Yes, Lady Lehcarouc…”
Woah woah, where is the real Unerolia and what have you done to her? Is this what Unerolia looks like when she’s seriously doing her work?
Also… I now know that this Carlas guy is also just an idiot, not some big mastermind with some very sinister plan or something.
I guess when they say that birds of a feather flock together, they really meant it.
Ragnus, who had been silent throughout their conversation, suddenly stood up and huffed at Carlas, “Why are you looking like we did something wrong? What we did was right! There is no need to be ashamed of it!”
Unerolia turned to glare at him, “You shut up. I’ve heard enough from you already.”
“Wha… What? You can’t just shut me up! I have a right to–”
Unerolia smacked him across the face with the back of her hand, sending the guy sprawling onto the ground.
He looked up at her in shock, “You… You slapped me?!”
“Esmeral, please?”
“As you wish, Mistress.”
The slave girl immediately pulled out a length of rope from out of nowhere and tied up the guy in an instant.
It happened so quickly the guy wasn’t even able to protest or defend himself from being tied up.
Unerolia then turned her attention back to Carlas who seemed to be questioning his life decisions right now.
“So I want to know… Is it true that the two of you have been buying illegal slaves and then forcing them to stay in the castle instead of allowing them to leave?”
He hesitated, “We… Didn’t exactly force them… It’s normal for them to repay us after we spent the Creas on them, right? So we just have them here as guests and let them do some work for us.”
“And did they agree to this arrangement?”
There was a relatively long pause before the guy finally responded, “We… Did not ask them…”
Unerolia stared at him, “So you don’t even know whether they are happy with this arrangement? Do you not see any problems with this?”
“But… This is better than leaving them as illegal slaves, right? We rescued them!”
“You two are so short sighted that I can’t believe you have not even seen the results of your actions…”
She snapped her fingers and several of our maids appeared, dragging along the slave shop owner that was tied up in chains and made to kneel at the side.
“Recognise him?” She asked.
He nodded, “Yes… He’s the one who helps us buy the illegal slaves in order to rescue them…”
Unerolia turned to the slave shop owner, “Tell me again, in exact detail, of how your business is run?”
The slave shop owner bowed his head, “I… After I knew… That the lord would buy them at any price… I increased the prices of those slaves by five times the amount I bought them for… And sold them to the lord…”
“And the bandits that supply you with these slaves?”
“They… They knew how profitable this was and started capturing more illegal slaves by expanding their size thanks to the money that they have received from the sales… They used that money to gather all the bandits under their own banner and then made use of the mage to summon even more beasts to make sure their raids go well…”
Unerolia turned to Esmeral, “What are the stats on bandit raids for the past few months?”
Esmeral bowed, “Compared to six months ago, the number of reports of bandit raids have increased by six hundred and fifty percent. Incidentally, the number of known illegal slaves have also increased by three hundred percent.”
Unerolia turned back to the two idiots who were gaping at what they just heard.
“Are you two happy now?”
The two of them shook their heads.
“Good, because you’re both fired.”
Oh damn.
